In the time between morning and noon, Paarthurnax settles down by the river of Dragonfield where the usual stone tablet depicting all the letters of dovahzul is. It's a recognizable landmark, after all... Although he won't turn away new faces.

During the afternoon, anyone venturing nearby will be called to by the old dragon. Investigate?

Dovahzul Study Group

[Once enough people have gathered about the area, Paarthurnax will finally speak. There's a pile of large flat stones behind him, which he makes no mention of.]

Drem yol lok. For those who are still uncertain, we will continue with the basics of dovahzul. Do not be ashamed to ask for assistance from myself, or those besides you. Language is not something which you can make solitary- it is made to connect with others and influence the world.

[Zuko is certainly still with the basics, at least as far as speaking is concerned. She did manage to write down Paarthurnax's phrase, but all she has scribbled under it is "ocean does not make." (In Chinese, though the kanji should be familiar to Japanese speakers.)

Care to help her with that? Or maybe just work on less philosophical conversation.]

[Rin really is the worst student ever. Or at least she was back home, with subjects she could care less about and teachers that were unwilling to see her as anything more than a troublemaker.

It's different here. Like cooking, this is something she's genuinely interested in. Unlike cooking, though, it has all the makings of text book subjects of which she has no idea how to deal with. Studying and practice are ideas she's still trying to grasp with fumbling hands.

But. She's there, bangs pinned away from her face and tail twitching behind her. That has to count for something, right?

The challenge Paar offers is waaay over her head, but stubbornness has her going for it anyway.

Poorly.

Which is why she's leaning over to take a peek at Zuko's page, not at all sneaky even though she probably thinks she's being so.]

[Maybe if he stares long enough at a particularly interesting piece of grass, the answer will come to him. Nah, instead he opts for trying to write down what words of the dragon's tongue he knows, but there are some gaps in what he's written. Someone want to come along and help him?]

To Paar specifically, and then open!

Kitten understands the words immediately, of course. Writing them is an entirely different matter. The small dragon hunkers down close to the ground and begins scratching words in the dirt with a foreclaw. Her handwriting is not the neatest, but she manages it eventually, copying the phrase over in Common beneath it. Her letters have clearly improved somewhat; she has been practicing.

She follows up by noting her name beneath the work, also in both Dovahzul and Common. Loklovaas and Skysong.

Kitten whistles for Paarthurnax, speaking to him privately, her universally understandable mindspeech of no language in particular. "It means that we do not learn when everything comes easily, right?" Thinking for barely a second, she clarifies, "I have no wish to devalue natural talent; that is not what I meant. If we only face the simplest of circumstances, our knowledge never grows through experience. We will not be prepared to face a situation that is less than ideal, nor equipped with the tools to do so."

Knowledge is important for dragons of Kitten's world. Education is highly valued, and Kitten's has been more thorough than that of any dragon of her age. Due in part to her exposure to mortals, war, and world travel, Kitten is living proof of this saying. As skilled a sailor as one can expect from anyone still a baby, learning more all the time, she approves.

She waits for Paarthurnax to answer.

After a brief conversation with her mentor, she turns back to the group. This time Kitten speaks in open mindspeech, audible by all. "I apologize that I cannot speak in Dovahzul, but I would be happy to converse with any of you and listen to your speech."

There's a reason Paarthurnax included the writing portion with Kitten in attendence, although it would benefit the rest of his students as well. He watches her patiently as she gets to work, and leans his head closer when she speaks to him.

[Later in the day, one can find Paarthurnax with one of those large flat rocks, talon tapping against it curiously. He looks up the moment he senses anyone remotely near.]

Ah- would you come closer? I have much to ask of the residents of this place.

[Sangheili, Kig-Yar, Jiralhanae...if you name an alien, the Meta has seen, and fought it. He's used to strange entities, but the sight of something large, something reptilian, and something speaking is more than enough to confuse and concern him.]

[Though he cannot respond in turn, there's a curious, if somewhat suspicious growl in response as he takes a step closer.]

If you wish to share what skills you know with me, I would find it useful for us all. [And his large head tilts to the side slightly.] I will not press if you do not.

[AZ looks up at the question, but shrugs and heads over, Floette trailing behind him. The little fairy Pokemon looks a bit more tired today.]

[Few things are important enough to distract Aoi from her daily jog, but she changes course to come see Paarthurnax, jogging in place in front of him.]

[Tobias wheels down as he's called, landing heavily in the grass. He's... been absent the past few days, including from this morning's lesson. He's just not been in the mood for anything that reminds him of school lately. He looks up at the dragon expectantly. There's a question?]

I know you change shapes. Do you possess other skills, Lokkoraav?

[N had been at the lesson, of course. Quiet as always, nose in his studies, leaps and bounds ahead of most of the class. The phrase had been easy enough for him to translate, and he had spent the rest of his time reversing things and attempting to write his own phrases in response.

After the group had dispersed, though, he came back to the Draongfield looking for... something.

Paar interrupted him from his search, earning a titled head and a curious expression.]

I am gathering the skills and talents of those here to organize them... [He gives a tilt of his head.] Yet if you are busy, they can wait.

[Still resting from yesterday's trip to the Skyway (as evidenced by the fading black eye and the many bruises), Rob had spent the morning working on the farm and had decided to stroll around after lunch. He felt a bit more comfortable approaching Paar and his part of the Bastion after talking with him, and had finally come over to the water. He'd been crouching next to a Nirnroot plant on the opposite shore of the river from the Dragonfield and staring at it in confused recognition when Paar spoke. His head jerked up and he tried his best to hide his confusion as he responded.]

Huh? Oh, sure, uh... [He glances around.] There a ford here?

Yes- a bridge as well some distance away.

[Roxas hasn't really talked to the big dragon before, and he glances behind him to make sure before coming a little closer.]

Uh, sure.

I am looking to gather knowledge of the talents and skills that are possessed by the residents here. It may be useful to have such a thing to look to in case of emergency.

What's up? I'll help out however I can.

[Ryu has made some remarkable strides in recovery since his return. With proper sustenance, his body has been recovering quickly. Though he still seems a little wobbly sometimes, he's adapting to walking on two legs quickly enough.]

[It's pretty much sheer chance that Patchouli happens to be in the area. However, she doesn't mind stopping for Paar at all. If he needs to know something, she will try to help. If it's about other people, well... yeah, that might be kind of a pain.]

What do you need? I will help you as much as I am able.

[ Red usually comes to the Dragonfield now and then early in the morning or late into the afternoon (and it was that late afternoon at this time), and the visit today was for a different reason than his usual desire to wind down -- it was to see the dragon.

Paar doesn't even need to speak first for Red to do it first, lifting up his hat and nodding to the dragon. ]

Drem yol lok. [ He'd gotten used to saying that by now. ] How are you?

The question comes as a surprise, but Rosethorn thinks well of the dragon. She wouldn't refuse his requests even if they were for something much more difficult than a moment of conversation. "Of course. What is it, Paarthurnax?"
