What: People in the Bastion are falling sick, and Zahi knows where a cure can be found. Unfortunately, it won't be easy to get to.

[On Day 201, after several people have fallen ill, another meeting is called. This time, however, it is not Nathaniel who has called for everyone. It's Zahi.]

Okay, I know everyone's been worried about the people in the hospital, and it looks like our fears weren't unfounded: some of the people who went on that last trip, they caught something.

I've been watching the symptoms, and I think I know what this is. A long time ago, back before Zayna was born, there was a terrible illness that claimed the lives of many Ura. Everyone who fell sick here, they had the same symptoms as those who caught the disease before.

On the plus side, this means that it can be cured. I know of a clinic, way out in the Terminals, where there should be some medicine stocked. Not only can we cure the sick, but we can give another kind of medicine to those who aren't sick yet, so they won't catch it at all.

The downside is that it's gonna take a while to get there. It'll be at least two days there, and possibly more to track down exactly where the clinic is, and then the same amount of time back. We're looking at a four-day minimum, which means we won't be much help to those who are sick right now. They'll either be dead or getting better by the time we get back.

Then there's the fact that it's really dangerous out there. Zayna and I were out on the Terminals before we came here, and let's just say that there's a reason we went looking for somewhere safer to stay.

If you'd rather stay here, I can understand that. The Bastion is an amazing place, and I wouldn't be surprised if someone here managed to save everyone. But I'm not a fan of putting all my eggs in one basket, so I figured it's worth a shot to go and try to get some of the medicine.

[There better be an empty bed somewhere close by, she's already starting to lose strength.]

I'll just... Go with Seimei. [doesn't matter whether there's a bed there or not, he'll squeeze in somehow. He just want to be near - can he have that, Rin-chan, please...?] Or take me back to yours. Let me do your hair. Put it out of the way for you...

[a full-body shiver, glancing around the rooms]

...how many so far, Rin-chan?

[Seriously, Kaoru?

... though she is a mess.]

Fine, my room...

[Only because she doesn't have the strength to get them both to Seimei's room and get her back to her own.]

I--... I'unno, I've lost count. Too many...

[individuates]

Show me the way, then.

[he can still hold out a bit longer, and he feels bad about waking her up so... He should at least fix her hair to compensate]

[he pulls a worried frown, shaking his head]. But... There are people out there, looking. They're going to find a cure, right? They're going to find it... [gosh, babbling, not good. Not good at all. He needs to not-do that, if he wants to go without triggering his coughing.]

Ryuuji is out there... they're gonna come back. They have to.

[For now though she's going to focus on getting them to that room before her aching knees give out.]

'course they will. [opening the door for her and ushering her inside]

[patting himself down for hairbands - thank goodness, he carries at least a couple for his own hair - he will sit - or rather flop too, if she does]

…your head hurts, right?

[She doesn't have to be told twice. She flops on to the bed, barely resisting the urge to just collapse on her side and try to go back to sleep. Tepig, roused by all the noise, pads over across the bed and gives Kaoru a curious look.

Oh, right, you're the weird boy from the other day that was saying stuff about trying to "rescue" him from Rin or whatever.]

Like I've been gettin' stomped on.

[individuates]

[gets settled somewhere he can lean against the wall, gesturing]

Come on, lie back. If you put your head in my lap I can probably give you a massage.

[It's not pure selflessness here, his arms feel like limp pasta, he's not going to be able to hold them up for long if she sits. But a massage will at least help, right? And, no, his doesn't particularly care if her hair is sweaty and gross, he is fully aware of feeling pretty gross himself]

[Again, no argument here. She does just that, letting Tepig settle in to a comfortable spot next to her where she can pet him slowly.]

How are you not feelin' like hell right now? I can barely move...

[individuates]

Believe me, I feel pretty bad. Maybe not as bad as you. I mean it only just got started for me.

[he still feels like his throat is full of pins, like there are stabbing, tingling pains all through his body, like putting his head down and sleeping under a pile of blankets would be a really good idea. But right now, he doesn't want to just... lie down and take it. Sure, Hikaru will make him later but right now, he can't - not while there are people here who need him.]

[finger-combing a little shakily through her hair]

…there are nine circles of hell, right? [with a flicker of a smile] On a scale of one to nine, how hellish do you feel?

[At least that sort of thing is calming for Rin, and the less she gets worked up over things, the better. Her tail moves slowly behind her, a lazy, tired wag.]

Eight, at least. This thing hit me like a truck and hasn't stopped hittin' me since...

[individuates]

[frowns a little. Oh, Rin-chan]

Have you been eating? Drinking? [fingers moving in small circles from behind one ear, to the nape of her neck, and back up to the other ear. God knows he hasn't felt like it today] Even tiny bites, little sips. You need to keep up your strength…

[smothering a cough with his free hand]

…not keep letting strange boys through the quarantine.

[hellpyre]

Water is fine but eatin'... ugh, I can't even think about food...

[Low purr, calmed noises...

She wishes Bon was here to do this, but she knows he's trying to make sure she doesn't kick the bucket.]

Strange boy that got sick anyway.

[individuates]

[tries to laugh at that one, but ends up sliding into another coughing fit so harsh he has to brace himself with one hand, so painful it brings tears to his eyes. Gdit, Rin-chan, here he was trying to be soothing…]

[wheezes]…not strange boy's fault.

[hellpyre]

[Whoops.]

Take it easy... do I gotta go hunt down Yukio?

[individuates]

[waving her off. Stop that, he's not dying. Just let him breathe]

[hellpyre]

[Except that he kind of is.]

... he can help. Even if it ain't a cure, it's still better'n bein' constantly miserable. 'least you can probably react to the meds he's got better'n I can.

[individuates]

[not yet!]

…they're not working for you?

[jeez, Rin-chan, no wonder you're at an eight]

…are they gonna make me sleep? I wanna find Seimei before I sleep...

I'unno, they really don't do anythin' for me at all. I've always been like that with medication...

[individuates]

[frowning lightly]

Just… let me fix your hair, okay? [everything else can come after]

And no more making the strange boy laugh.

Okay okay, I'll shadup...

[individuates]

[carefully adjusts his position - you have no idea, Rin-chan - or perhaps you do - how hard it is for him to NOT settle down on your bed and just. Not. Move.]

[combs through her hair again and splits it into sections, weaving it together into a plait that sits over her shoulder. His arms feel weak and shaky, and his fingers won't quite comply, so he can't braid as neatly as usual, but it should hold. Or at least keep the worst of it off her face and the back of her neck]

…you need anything? Anything I can get?

[Oh she knows. It's quite admirable that he's managing to not do that.

But she's just going to keep quiet and let that little bit of pampering calm her enough that she actually feels somewhat restful.]

Mn... should probably try drinkin' some water.

[individuates]

[good. You're lucky you caught Kaoru while he can still pamper. And he's glad that he can actually help you feel a bit better, even if he feels like hell himself]

[shifting carefully, but not quite making to rise - where is your water, Rin-chan?] Drink, then sleep. [a suppressed cough, a slight shiver] …all right?
