What: People in the Bastion are falling sick, and Zahi knows where a cure can be found. Unfortunately, it won't be easy to get to.

[On Day 201, after several people have fallen ill, another meeting is called. This time, however, it is not Nathaniel who has called for everyone. It's Zahi.]

Okay, I know everyone's been worried about the people in the hospital, and it looks like our fears weren't unfounded: some of the people who went on that last trip, they caught something.

I've been watching the symptoms, and I think I know what this is. A long time ago, back before Zayna was born, there was a terrible illness that claimed the lives of many Ura. Everyone who fell sick here, they had the same symptoms as those who caught the disease before.

On the plus side, this means that it can be cured. I know of a clinic, way out in the Terminals, where there should be some medicine stocked. Not only can we cure the sick, but we can give another kind of medicine to those who aren't sick yet, so they won't catch it at all.

The downside is that it's gonna take a while to get there. It'll be at least two days there, and possibly more to track down exactly where the clinic is, and then the same amount of time back. We're looking at a four-day minimum, which means we won't be much help to those who are sick right now. They'll either be dead or getting better by the time we get back.

Then there's the fact that it's really dangerous out there. Zayna and I were out on the Terminals before we came here, and let's just say that there's a reason we went looking for somewhere safer to stay.

If you'd rather stay here, I can understand that. The Bastion is an amazing place, and I wouldn't be surprised if someone here managed to save everyone. But I'm not a fan of putting all my eggs in one basket, so I figured it's worth a shot to go and try to get some of the medicine.

[He's not quite in the hospital, but right in front of it. Golurk has dragged AZ this far, but it needs a little help with the door. None of AZ's other Pokemon are really helpful when it comes to opening doors, but this mass of jecket and hair needs to get in there, Golurk knows that much.]

'Lurk, go-golurk!'

[While it waits it's going to attempt to open the door and shove AZ in at the same time again.]

[Colin is preparing to make another supply run out the front door when Golurk starts trying for the door.]

[The string of curses that flow from his lips are, thankfully, muted by his turning off his environmental suit's comm. He does not look happy though.]

-- puss And I JUST STERILIZED!

[Whoops, comm came back on perhaps a little too soon. Whatever the case, he's opening the door and looking up at Golurk.]

He's got it too, huh? Here, I got him, hold the door for me.

[Colin reaches out to grab hold of AZ.]

So it's spreading. We are officially looking at the second to worst case scenario... How are you doing, AZ? You still with me?

[Golurk shrugs a little. It's not it's fault. But it holds the door for Colin.]

[AZ, on the other hand, makes a noise that's somewhere between a grunt and a groan. He takes a few moments to respond, and his voice is dry and scratchy.]

I can't die that easily.

Cockiness is my forte, AZ. Leave it to me.

Unless you're being literal, in which case you've got my sympathies, 'cause this will REALLY suck in that case.

[He smiles at Golurk, definitely looking somewhat frayed at the edges.]

Don't mean to take it out on you, big guy. Just not exactly having a good week, and it's going to get worse from here. You coming in? Or do you gotta take care of the other pokemon?

Second one. Remind me to... tell you about Yveltal some time.

[Golurk shakes its head, but reaches out to give Colin a gentle pat on the head. Showing fondness for humans(?) other than its trainer is weird. It closes the door behind Colin and AZ and heads back towards the daycare. It's got a job to do.]

[AZ isn't much help when it comes to moving. His jacket and clothes are built for rough living, and the thick material isn't very good for feverish skin. What little skin is visible is pretty obviously overheated, but he's shaking.]

... Sorry.

[He should have been more careful, he should have scrubbed up better... but there's nothing to be done for that now.]

Golurk, hold it!

[Colin's voice is stern.]

If AZ has this, You've been exposed. Get Torkoal to roast you with flame to kill the virus, so we don't spread it further. Don't let ANYONE within ten feet of you until that happens. Got it? You can take that, right?

[He trusts Golurk, Golurk is capable and well-intentioned. One way or the other, Golurk's going to give an answer, so in the meantime, Colin's going to turn his attention to AZ.]

You hush, this is a spit and baling wire quarantine at best. We're only staving off the inevitable with this... I doubt you could have done much more to protect against this. We've got to get you taken care of with everyone else.

[Golurk turns back and nods. It can do that. Thankfully it's not weak against Fire.]

[AZ looks down at Colin and nods weakly. Talking hurts, so he's just going to... not, for a bit.]

[Colin smiles at Golurk.]

Good job, Golurk. And again, from bringing AZ here. Keep the kids safe, we'll take care of AZ for you.

[Colin lets Golurk retreat. Lifting AZ's weight is easy, but AZ is definitely a little unwieldly. Sorry, AZ. You're getting Bridal carried.]

We're going to lay you down, we... might need two beds for you, sadly. After that, we need to keep you hydrated, and work to get your fever down. It's been getting worse for those that have been infected. And I'm sorry to say, but your scans are showing similar signs as the others...

How much interaction have you had with people outside?

[He doesn't know where the breach happened, but it DID. And it's had several days to have free reign of the place. They're going to need a larger quarantine now...]

[AZ listens, but the words take a few extra moments to make sense in his head. Once they do, he thinks about them for a few moments.]

Not much. The Pokemon probably shouldn't be affected, though I don't know for sure. Most of my interaction has been with the people who live with me - Hilda, N, Anna, and Calem.

Somehow, it got out. I don't know how, and there's nothing to be done for it anyway.

[Colin shakes his head, carrying AZ to the quarantined ward.]

We're looking at a very bad scenario for the Bastion. I think the Pokemon might have been carrying the virus out... I don't know for certain, and I don't have a suitable medical scanner. But we've had little ones running about. I should have shut that down... But the Quarantine has been too lax. Again, nothing to be done about it now.

[He sounds more irritated than usual.]

Don't blame yourself. It could have gotten out any number of ways.

[He doesn't say 'it'll be all right'. They don't know that, and he stopped believing in false hope a long time ago. But he coughs, hard enough to make his muscles pull painfully, and he draws in a sharp breath. He hasn't been sick for a very long time. Was this always what it was like?]

It's not the best quarantine, I know... There's several ways it could get out. I'm just frustrated that this is going to get much worse before it gets better.

How is your condition, if I get you water, can you drink?

We've already had to set up IVs...

I... I can try.

[He's trying to not complain about how he feels. Colin doesn't need to hear it and he doesn't need to waste the effort. He's so tired, but he needs to get something out before he starts letting his brain drift off into fever.]

Just... promise me. If it comes down between saving me and saving someone younger, save them first. I know I take up more resources than other people.

Lucky for you, AZ, that I intend to save every damn life I can.

[He gives AZ that same Cocky grin he always sports. He won't let AZ know how bad the life projections are for everyone in this hospital, that's his own nasty secret for the moment. So long as they think he's got their well-being in hand, they'll be able to rest, and perhaps recover.]

Just don't do anything stupid like trying to move around while you're sick.

We've got bed pans, and I've mucked about in enough ships' plumbing systems to not be grossed out. So you just focus on rest and recovery.

[AZ estimates that it's pretty bad anyway, given that he suspects even a sloppy quarantine made by Colin is still probably fairly secure. But he nods, curling against Colin a bit.]

Just don't hold anything I say while sick against me. Or do, because you're you and I expect teasing from you.

I don't do that when people are healthy. Rest assured, I won't hold anything against you now.

[He smirks.]

Good to see we understand each other.

[There's a room now, and a bed that's way too small for AZ.]

Okay, sit here, lay down on your side if you can. I'll bring over a second bed so you can stretch out...

[He laughs a little, though it hurts. He manages to get himself over to the bed and curls up into the fetal position. Even then, it's still close to being too short for him and definitely not wide enough. He makes a vague effort to try to pull off his jacket, but his body aches too much to move that way.]

[WHY did he let AZ convince him that other projects would be more important than good, proper living conditions for the man?

Admittedly, it wouldn't be so easy as to just haul an AZ-sized bed in here, but still.

He's just going to wheel this bed over to AZ, and put the two beds together. A few pillows in place between the beds to fill the gap, and... well, it's not perfect, but for the time being, it will do.]

Okay, AZ. Roll over here, and I'll start getting those clothes off you.

[Because he's dealt with normal-sized things for his whole life, he can deal with them for longer. He slowly uncurls and looks up at Colin. He knows his jacket and hat have to come off but he's still reluctant to do so.]

[Colin gives him the best gentle smile he can manage through an environmental suit.]

I know you're hesitant, but you're going to want these clothes off now. The longer you stay in them, the more contaminated they're going to get, and we may have to burn them when all is said and done.

Besides.

You're going to be going into cold sweats within a day or so... You want to be wearing as little as possible when that happens.

[He won't force AZ to disrobe, yet.]

[He nods, and rolls over so he can slowly work one arm out of the jacket and then slowly rolls over so he can get the other out. He pulls his hat off as well and puts it in a jacket pocket so he doesn't lose it later.]

There.

[Colin takes the offered clothes and tosses them in a bag for later cleaning and sterilization.]

That's a good start. Can you get the rest, or do you need help?

[You know it's not that easy, AZ.]

If you can find something that'll fit me instead...

[He's not totally undressing in front of someone else. He still has a little pride.]

We can get you two hospital gowns. But those clothes, everything you're wearing, needs to come off.

[He nods slightly.]

Alternately, I can make you a sheet toga. That may even be less drafty.

[He still hesitates. Logically, he knows that he needs to, but he doesn't want someone else to see how he looks. It's not terrible, but even with trying to keep up with more modern things the idea of someone he's not in a long-term romantic relationship with or in the onsen with seeing him undressed is incredibly embarrassing.]

I...

[He feels like a Deerling caught in someone's headlights.]
