Day 123 [OPEN]

Who: Everyone
Open: Open
When: Day 123
Where: All over the Bastion
What: Obligatory "We just got more people/survived a hellish experience" mingle log!
Format: Your choice!
Warnings: Shouldn't be any?

[So the past few days in the Bastion have been very hectic and a little more than emotionally stressful for everyone. About two days have come and gone since the last very large batch of arrivals have come in to the Bastion, and thankfully since then it's been relatively quiet. It's a good time to compress, meet some new people and maybe have some good food at the distillery courtesy of Rin.]

[ Viola is instantly pinged by the word "bow" and it shows on her face. Her eyes light up. ]

I'm pretty good with a bow myself, actually. If you want, I'd love to help out.

Tell me how to make a good target for them - rings was an idea, for things that could move, but I really have no idea - and we can call it a good deal.

You're on. [ Viola nodded. ]

[ She turned to the wood bundle next to her. ]
These would work okay for target practice, but it would be better if they were made out of straw. That way, your arrow heads don't get very badly damaged when you're practicing.

[ She waved a hand out toward an open area. ] Some round ring targets out there would also be good. Rings are the best when you want to learn how to aim. Back home, I would hang some in trees or put them on top of my house to get some practice shooting at different angles. Shooting at a target way above you is a lot different than one on the ground.

[ She paused, placing her hands on her hips as she continued thinking. ] Moving targets would be good too, but I'm not sure what this place has that would launch things into the air. I had a thing with a flint-lock that I could load wooden plates into and it would shoot them, but I don't know how to make it. [ She shrugged apologetically. ] I bought it from someone a long time ago.

Archery is fun!

Makes sense. Right now, I think the straw is being kept over for the cows, but I can see what I can do with shards.

[ The knight pauses at that. Shards. Duke probably could have gotten nice targets with shards. ]

Maybe these in shapes like some of the monsters we find - Gasfella's are somewhat humanoid, so they work for this.

[ Angles also make sense. As for moving... ]

There's Nathaniel we can ask - he's an engineer of some sort, as is.. Colin. All that comes to mind is ... a clothes line with a pulley, but that would just go back and forth.

it is!

Yeah, I like the idea of making targets shaped like the monsters around here. [ She tapped a finger against her chin in contemplation. ] And maybe adding metal to show what parts are impervious to attack. My friends and I had a lot of trouble with a Lunkhead when we arrived.

[ Colin and Nathaniel. Neither of those names were familiar to Viola. ] A clothesline with a pulley, though, would be good for moving targets as well, especially for folks just starting out. [ She chewed her lower lip. ] I was thinking of something sort of like a cannon to shoot other stuff into the air, except not as strong or else we'll never even see the targets.

.... Something really simple that is like a cannon would just be take a plank, a cylinder, and put whatever you want to toss up on the other side. Then you step on the raised edge and hopefully the stuff goes up and not in your face.

So that would be like... [ As she spoke, she motioned with her hands to help herself visualize what was being described. ]

Oh, like a see-saw! [ Viola beamed, pleased by her powers of deduction. ] That could work! Maybe we could get one of those engineers you mentioned to figure out the right angle for something like that.
