[Day 225] [EVENT] A sinking feeling

[Early in the morning on Day 225, most people are probably asleep. For the couple of stragglers who may still be awake so late, though, they may notice something strange. At 2:31 am, any lights that are on start to hum, and flicker in and out of dimness.

At 2:32 am, every light in the Bastion (excluding the emergency lights) shuts off entirely.

At 2:33 am, a horrible grinding noise can be heard throughout the Bastion, seemingly coming from everywhere at once. This sound continues on for several minutes, throughout everything else that begins to happen.

At 2:34 am, for anyone outside Nathaniel can be seen running from the Apartments towards the Monument as if his life depended on it.

At 2:35 am, ever so slowly, sections of the Bastion begin to sink.

[He stretches his neck out - ah.]

Looks like most people are there already. I just want to make sure no one's stuck in the apartments or something.

[Anya doesn't understand his sudden awkwardness. He didn't seem to care that she was naked half an hour ago.]

Yes. To discourage anything from bothering us.

Tobias--? [Zuko does a double-take, looking hard at him with her good eye. He does look somehow different. Isn't Paarthurnax missing that horn? She shakes it off. Okay, it's Tobias. He's still answering her question.]

Good, we're doing better than I thought. I have to do something, but then I can come back and make a sweep of the apartments.

[Zuko is making the rounds now that she's caught her breath, though between being woken up at 2:30am and all the running around, she looks a little tired.

She checks his horns before addressing him.]

Paarthurnax? Looks like you made some friends.

[wayofvoice]

[Product of circumstances. Dov don't procreate... Which some people are probably thankful for.]

[As some of the smaller dragons bristle and breathe little puffs of fire in Rob's general direction from nervousness, Paarthurnax just lets out a breath.]

There are only those who are attempting to fix the Monument, now.

I meant anything else you could boss me into doing or getting for you.

[His moon powers aren't compatible with a lot of things, really.]

[...And yeah there's no moon.]

[After a second of contemplation, Colin thrusts the flashlight into Duke's hand.]

Take this, I want it back when I catch up with you. I can see fine without it.

Start towards the docks, and watch your step. I'll catch up with you shortly, this shouldn't take more than a minute. And if you need me to carry you, don't let pride get in the way or we're both going to die.

[Yep, Colin's off like a shot to Duke's hospital room.

Need someone to stand guard with?

[Saix is carrying a rifle in one hand- he'll keep from summoning his claymore for now- as he approaches.]

He could've said something about that.

[Forever annoyed with this man, but at least they have some form of shelter they can go to.]

[One horn broken, yep, it's the right dragon.]

They are Crona's young ones. I could not ignore their cries of distress.

[He is also perhaps heavily biased towards Crona, so.]

[Oh look, there's Papa Bird, hurrying over in a fuss.]

There you are! We were worried sick about you!

[Which is to say that Zulf was worried sick, and that's enough worrying for around eight other people.]

[Zuko nods in understanding and then remarks:]

At least they're appreciative.

[Yep those sure are some bite marks on her arms, thanks turtle ducks.]

[ Okay. Duke takes a moment to turn the flashlight on and off, and then just heads out at a run toward the docks.

And Colin will probably find her about halfway there, flashlight bobbing as she tries to catch her breath around coughing. The knight is stubbornly taking a step when she feels like she can, but slow. Running is not a thing, and it is making her pretty upset with herself. ]

Oh, well, in that case, can I use you as a pillow once I'm done?

[...no, that really has nothing to do with improving the barrier, aside from maybe showing some appreciation that she's making one.]

[Yeah, Colin was afraid of this...]

Damn, your lungs are still weak. Okay...

[He's got her sword in one hand, and the largest pitcher of water he could find in the other.]

I had a feeling you might need this. Drink, now. You can complain to me about the treatment when we've got you on the barge.

[Colin holds out the pitcher to her.]

[...Sigh.]

I suppose. I'm going to go look around at the rest of the group. [He hesitates to call it a proper 'camp'.] Call me when you've finished with the circle then.

Their fires are still small. They did not harm me.

[Being built like a scaley tank has its advantages.]

Did you retrieve all you needed from the Bastion?

[notduchess]

[ Complain? The shaking under her and the gaps in the Bastion make the idea of complaining over his haste laughable.

She passes him his flashlight back, takes the pitcher, and does her best to not choke as she drinks. Because coughing and rapid breathing and drinking at the same time? Sure. ]

I wouldn't mind the company.

[Because she knows her senses are dulled by the lack of sleep. Adrenaline only helps so much. Edea shifts her stance so that one side of her leans more toward Saix.

Weapons appearing out of nowhere wouldn't actually startle her too much, even in her current state. She's used to that.]

[croceamors]

[He comes up besides her, adjusting the gun so that it's more comfortable in his arms, and glances out at the expanse of Skyway.]

I suppose we became too confident.

[daughterofursa]

[Maybe not much more appreciative than the turtle ducks after all. Zuko just doesn't have scales.]

Well... I think we got everyone out, but I don't have much besides my swords.

[Still barefoot, even.]

Yes. I'll be sure to track you down.

Let us hope that the Bastion is restored soon, then, even if only long enough for us to gather further supplies.

It would make the trip to the observatory an easier task then if we had nothing.

[daughterofursa]

[She nods again.]

Even if it is restored for longer, I don't think it's wise for us to move back in until we understand what happened and why. And we need a better plan in case something like this happens again.

It's not really my place to say. I've only been here a month. [She shrugs, fighting back the urge to say "which is longer than I've stayed in many places."]

But when someone tells me "this is a safe place" you don't exactly expect that to be conditional.
