A few days ago, some residents of the Bastion might have become aware of a confrontation happening at a certain Ura's humble abode. There was some yelling- although not clear- and the result was a very harried looking Rin Okumura forcibly dragging away resident Mancer Nathaniel. The next couple of days have been quiet, but today... Well, if anyone wants to ask about and see what the deal was, it seems like today is the day.

It seems like Nathaniel has finally quit his own self imposed isolation, if only so that he doesn't starve to death. Apparently anger can only sustain a man for so long. He can be seen storming through the Bastion, a thundercloud practically gathered about him, or at the eating area looking very much like he wants to be left alone.

Zulf has been less of a hermit. Anyone who has seen him since the argument has probably noticed his black eye and sore nose. He seems angry as well, although it's quieter and colder underneath all his civility. More noticeably, he's been hard at work building a few fences near the edges of the Bastion- mostly near his tent but also in other areas as well. They're not the best fences, but they're good enough, hopefully. You can approach him at the shrine, his tent, or anywhere, really... He's as available as he's always been. He might even approach you, just to warn about falling off the edge of the Bastion.

Seriously, this place has needed safety railings for ages now. Who's bright idea was it not to include safety railings? RUCKS...

Anyone wandering by the Kitchens today will notice... Damn, that's a lot of yelling. And slamming of things. Should knives be used to chop that hard...? That's right, Rin is in a bad mood and anyone who comes near will immediately know it. The excess swearing is probably a good clue. Unlike the other two, she's unleashing her temper with wild abandon in the sanctity of her kitchen where no one will bug her. Well. Unless YOU bug her...

Of course, these three aren't the only ones noticeable about the Bastion today! It looks like the Ura residents are just coming out of the woodwork.

Anyone who's talked to either of the latest Ura additions knows that Zulf came in with Zia. While not involved with the row from a few days ago, she seems just as worried as Zulf seems angry. It's possible to see her wandering about with her pet Pecker chick. Might see her coming away after a discussion with Zulf, too... Maybe she knows what's going on?

There's also Zanya and her father Zahi who have been apparently a bit more sociable these last few days. There's apparently a subject they're both interested in which they'll approach people about, although they'll do so differently. Zahi will strike up friendly conversation, but Zanya will simply get right to the point: do you have any idea what happened?

Feel free to strike up conversation with any of them, or even try and talk to everyone if you wish.

[ooc: This is your characters chance to investigate just what the drama is all about! In such a small place as the Bastion, it's a bit hard to miss... Feel free to have your characters speculate or gossip with the Ura NPCs about what may have happened or if they caught onto a sliver of what happened (like Zulf and Nathaniel falling off the edge of the Bastion), or for them to go the more direct route by talking to either Nathaniel, Zulf, Rin, or Zia.]

[Long story short is that Rin went to get Venn's journal from Nathaniel. Upon realizing who exactly wanted it, Nathaniel went to confront Zulf. There was an argument on just who and what caused the Calamity... and then Nat punched Zulf in the face, they rolled off the edge of the Bastion, and Rin separated them after they got blown back up.]

[Zulf starts to set down his supplies as they arrive to the fence.]

I apologize, I'm making a reference I'm not certain makes any sense to foreigners. I suppose the reputation of the Walls doesn't mean much without any context.

[ Polka giggled a little, sheepishly. ]

I wasn't going to say anything about that. I may not understand the comment about the walls, but I was able to understand that your friend is very capable of handling himself. It made that much sense, at least.

It's something I'm going to have to get used to all over again. I had to hold myself back on making Tazal references when I came to Caelondia as well.

[astras]

Well ... this is our home now.

[ As much as it still hurt to admit. It may be obvious that it still hurt, by the brief pained look that appears on her face. She tries to smile again soon, though. There was no point in dwelling on it, right? ]

I wouldn't mind listening, if you wanted to talk about it.

Hm? [He glances back at her for a moment.] The Rippling Walls, you mean?

Yes, that. I would like to hear about it.

Well... They used to be one of Caelondia's greatest achievements. They were enormous and towering- I remember being rather awestruck when I saw them as I approached the city. Nothing was ever supposed to get through them. I suppose they did such a duty quite well. Even during the war, Ura Warriors nearly succeeded but never did.

However, that sort of structure requires constant vigilance. It needs to be constantly repaired and constantly guarded. You have all sorts of beasts from the Wild going at it.

It's- it was an option for anyone living in Caelondia to go on a 'tour' of the Walls. That meant for five years, you would be relied on to fix it and beat back any manner of beasts that threatened it- sometimes going into the very Wilds themselves if it was called for. You would get paid, and get fed... but it was very difficult thankless work. Some people got broken from doing work like that. No one ever did more than one tour.

Well, he was in the midst of his second one before all this happened.

[ Hearing it like that, she was even more in awe. ]

He really must be strong, then, to work two tours on those walls!

He is. Out of anyone here, he's the one I have the most faith in. I just hope he doesn't do anything foolish... He's used to working on his own. We're together now, however, and there's absolutely no need for that sort of thing.

Mm, absolutely. Acting on your own in this place ... it's not wise, not at all.

When I first got here, my friends and I were attacked by a really big monster. We barely came away from that mostly intact ... one of my friends ended up really hurt, too.

Yes, the Wilds are a ferocious place... Caelondia was always determined to try and beat it back. We preferred just avoiding the problem to begin with, although that never did take care of the Anklegators...

I'm sorry to hear that happened to your friend. I trust he's recovered since then?

[astras]

[ She nods. ]

I was able to heal him a little before we got to the Bastion. Jazz is very strong, though, so I like to think that he would have pulled through even without the extra help. Still, I'm glad I was able to give him that. We were all really worried ...

It's good the Bastion has a hospital, then. It certainly didn't have that the last time I had checked... I suppose changes were made.

[astras]

Yes! He got really good care at the hospital, to help with what I couldn't heal. We're really fortunate that he was able to get that sort of help.

You've been in the Bastion for a while, though, right? Did you just leave one day and there was a hospital when you came back?

[ From the way he was talking, she assumed he was a native or something. He knew more about this place than anyone else she knew. ]

Ah- [Oops. For a moment he looks a bit thrown off balance.] No, I.. only arrived properly before the festival.

I simply... knew the man who built this place.

Is that your friend you were talking about, or someone else?

[ She'd be pretty interested to know the man who built this place, definitely. ]

I'm sorry. It sounds like you miss him ...

[ Unless she's misinterpreting that. ]

[She's not. BUT...]

That rude and arrogant old man? We may very well be better off without him! [HUFF!!!] He was halfway to the Mother as it was with how many secrets he kept and how white his hair was! Disrespectful to the Pantheon- [Hammer thwack!] Prideful- [Thwack!] And so self assured that it was nothing short of a holy miracle that he never choked on it! [Thwack!]

And he never stopped talking! It was overcompensation, it certainly had to be, because none of us needed to hear all of his ridiculous words! If it wasn't one thing, it was the other. It was as though an encyclopedia had been granted life and a mouth! Mention a place? Oh yes, of course he would tell you more than you ever needed to know about it although if you ever cared to ask me, I would say that ridiculous old man was wrong on more than a few accounts. Glance at the bottles available at the Distillery? He'd make mention of it. For heaven's sake, I'm almost certain he's commented on the state of my shoes before. His mouth always had to be going off, it was absurd! To make matters even worse, he acted as if he knew every little thing. I couldn't stand that man.

He's better off with the Mother. Perhaps She'll be able to keep him quiet for a moment before he does something ridiculously insulting that makes the Gods want to toss him into a hole. Considering he was never particularly quiet about his opinion of them, he would be the type to start something.

[A few more aggravated thwacks of his hammer against the fence, and Zulf is left glaring sulkily at the now rather bent nail he's made. Another slight huff.]

I couldn't stand him on the best of days. It's especially infuriating... He's already survived one enormous disaster, someone that stubborn could survive another, that's what you'd think.

[ She still misses the people who are assumed dead back home due to world explosions. Hell, she didn't even believe that the worst sorts of people back home deserved to die. She would have rather seen them see the error of their ways instead of having to fight them ... ]
