The Festival Continues [Day 144]

Who: Everyone
Open: Open
When: Day 144
Where: all over the Bastion
What: Day 2 of the festival because that other post filled up fast
Format: any
Warnings: none

Day 2 - Day of Hope and Bravery

Once again, at midnight, another torch arrives - this time with a horse along with the gear and bullshead. As before, they are list by Zulf. Some of the other decorations fade out, to be replaced by Yudrig or Lemaign-specific decorations like horseshoes, saddles, hammers and plants made of colored metal. This will continue to happen throughout the festival, with new decorations overshadowing old ones, but the old ones still remaining here and there.

During the previous day, conversations with a any of the NPCs (or the recently arrived Uras) will bring up the topic of the second day of the festival. Should you care to listen, you'll learn that they use the very early morning of this day to make wishes, wishes that you must think in to a horseshoe that will be left on the side of your home that faces where the "sun" would be rising (the closest approximation to "east").

Speaking of horses! There seems to be a pen with stallions! Unlike Pyth, one must ride one of these stallions and try to stay on it as long as they can while it bucks and jumps about wildly. Good luck to whoever can manage this, it is not an easy task at all! Only one person can win Yudrig's favor, because at the end of the day the stallions will all take off back to... wherever they came from. The person that manages to stay the longest, though, will win a lovely pair of Yudrig boots, and will gain a single very fast horse for the Bastion to keep.

Along with the horses, there will also be races! Three legged races, races while balancing odd objects on spoons, so many races! Most of these are for the kids to make up for the lack of kid-focused things from the day before, but adults are encouraged to help and participate.

Incidentally, respect is also given to those considered soldiers. Be it by their own mental thinking ("I am a soldier for justice/I am a protector, etc") or by their actual title (this includes exorcists, exorcists in training, rebel leaders, etc) but they will be honored on this day for their bravery, comittment and efforts. The same goes for masons. There will be a table set up with charms for the bracelets, specifically hammer shaped ones - everyone is welcome to take one, but anyone who isn't of this persausion may find them too heavy to wear. The charm can be removed, though, but remember to keep the bracelet!

With that in mind, about midday the center of the Bastion will be cleared and people will be asked if they would like to participate in a game of "Defend Lemaign". It's basically Capture the Flag, but with a singular goal in mind - only one team has a "flag" (actually a small hammer statue) and that team must defend it from the other team. Teams can be any size, but once that statue is grabbed and brought to the other side, OR the timer runs out with Lemaign still within his "temple" the game is over. This will continue throughout the afternoon.

When evening falls again, the second torch for the day will appear to be lit, this one decorated with hammers as well as the standard gear and bull. The day begins to wind down, though there are once again other things to do - this time an entire area dedicated to various sizes of building blocks ranging from small to huge. Go nuts, build what you want, show off your creations! And keep them, they will come in handy later! This is not just for kids, even if it seems like it.

There's also jousting taking place. Nothing as dangerous as true jousting - just wooden horses on tracks that have to be manually pushed along (so be sure to take a willing friend with yout) and padded poles that strike padded armor. Winners will find more charms for those bracelets that were given out as their prize, and five shards per win.

Also, something to keep in mind: Since the day is focused around bravery quite a bit, anyone who shows off a particularly awesome show of bravery (be it personal like asking someone out that you like, facing a mild fear and not running away from it, or something even more spectacular) you will inexplicably find your entire room decorated with horseshoes. Horseshoes everywhere. Why? Yudrig, that's why.

And anyone who visits Lemagin's shrine, for whatever reason, will find themselves inexplicably hit with a wave of optimism. Just for the day, though.

This night winds down much the same as before, and again the children are encouraged to sleep outside while lulled to sleep by tales of Yudrig and Lemagin's adventures.

[Zulf wants to make sure that everyone hears something they like, so when he finishes with the current one, he smiles politely to Polka.]

Is there a particular God you would like to hear about?

Me?

[ Oh, he's addressing her ... she doesn't really know what to choose, if we're being fair. However, she DID feel she resonated enough with one of the gods before ... that said, she didn't know much. ]

Would you happen to know any stories about Jevel, Sir?

[ Who are we kidding, he seems to know about every God. She'd been over here long enough to think that much, anyway. ]

Story 3: Jevel and Mount Zand

[personal profile] fuckthemancers 2014-01-04 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
As a matter of fact, I do. It may take some explanation, however. After all, you're not from here.

[He clears his throat a little and then sets to explaining.]

Deep in the Wilds, there is an enormous mountain- thick as any city and high enough to touch the sky. It is called Mount Zand. Beasts of all sorts make their home there, from birds with colorful feathers we do not even have names for yet to Lunkheads waiting to ambush the unsuspecting. No one has conquered it, and perhaps this is because it is a holy place... touched by Jevel.

You see, a very very long time ago that Jevel decided he wished to be able to see all of the world from a single point. There were many tall trees that could carry him, but he was half old and could not clamber like his younger sibling Olak could. There were mountains then, but none that were tall enough for his liking. He walked all about the newly created world to see if anything might satisfy him. Eventually his trek took him through the Wilds and it was there that he decided he would simply build something of his own. It took him a great while, for while half the time he was strong and spry, the other half he had to rest more often than he worked. Still, he was determined and at one point accepted repentant Roathus's help. In due time, a large tower was right in the midst of the Wilds and Jevel could nearly brush his fingertips with the Mother as she made her walks through the night sky.

Of course, the other Gods felt the need to inspect their brothers creation. First was Lemaign, and he walked about the base of the tower. "As a craftsman myself, this is fine work, my brother!" Lemaign called up to Jevel, who was still sitting at the top of his creation. "Perhaps I may inspect it, to see that it holds steady?" And he held his hammer aloft.

"While your offer is meant in good will, Lemaign, my brother," Jevel called back, "I have inspected this tower myself with Roathus and our Mother watching!" Still, Lemaign insisted and Jevel soon agreed to keep the matter simple. Yet as Lemaign prepared his first strike, Jevel gave a wink from the youthful side of his face and a fever fell upon his brother. Dizzy and unsteady, Lemaign swung and then continued to do so yet only struck earth. Each strike made dirt and rocks gather up against the tower until it was nearly half earth and half stone. Still, the tower stood.

Giggling behind her hands, Hense lead dear Lemaign away so that he might rest before she came to the base of the tower as well. "What fun that looked, Jevel! May I try my hand, all in good fun?" Now Jevel could not resist his sister's smile and neither could he raise a hand against her. He agreed, and Hense encouraged her thorny vines to try and take the tower from him. This time Jevel winked with the elderly side of his face. The rose covered vines became diseased, wilting against one another. More attempted to build over them at Hense's encouraging, but while they reached high indeed, they could not reach high enough to reach the top. Hense and Jevel broke off their game with some laughter, the latter waving jauntily to his sister from up high.

As their game ended, however, they both heard the mighty and aggravated hoofbeats of Pyth come towards them. The Bull tossed his head, awake and in a foul mood. "What reason is there for such noise and ruckus which may wake me?" he demanded, a stomp of his hoof accompanying each word. With each stomp, plantlife of all sorts began to take over the dirt and vines which already had taken up a good deal of Jevel's tower. It was with this that it was finally covered, although Pyth did not see much. When the Wakeful Bull became so worked up, it was hard on occasion for him to see past his own emotions.

Fortunately, a gentle hand lay upon his head, and Pyth calmed instantly. It was the Lorn Mother. "They meant you no personal disrespect, Pyth," she told him gently, and look up at the tower. Yet no longer could it be called a proper tower of simple wood and stone. It was now a mountain, flourishing with life. Micia cupped a hand to her mouth and called up to the mountain, "Jevel! Are you well?"

After some moments, Jevel pushed himself to the bottom. At his touch, plants had weakened and withered so that he could push his way through, and at his wave, they had grown healthy again. "I am quite well, dear Mother," he said, smiling. "This is not what I expected to happen of my tower, but I have no ill will to what made it so. I can still travel to its top and see the world as I have wanted. It is still a fine tower in my eyes."

Because of Jevel's presence, it is said that the plants there can do anything in the world, from cure any disease to make the most debilitating poisons, so long as one is willing to risk the treacherous journey there.

[ After the relaying of the story, Polka smiled, her eyes wide, bright, and shining. It seemed like such a nice story for the God that she resonated with! Well, giving his brother a fever wasn't necessarily the nicest thing, but she would presume it wasn't an act of malice, given how Hense had responded to it. ]

Does such a place truly exist?

[ She had to ask. If it had, it would be something to look for ... though chances were better that if it had existed, the Calamity probably took it. ]

It does. Mount Zand is a real place, just as real as the Rippling Walls or the Tazal Terminals. It would simply take a bit of searching... Particularly with everything as it is.

We'll be able to find these places again someday, then? If it's possible, I know I would like to see it for myself. It must be a very pretty place.

Of course. Just keep in mind that it is very deadly as well- many beasts of the Wilds such as Lunkheads call Mount Zand home. There's a reason Caelondia has not been able to conquer it yet.

There is a lot about this place that is deadly ... maybe not so much here in the Bastion, but definitely outside of it.

If we don't have something, some goal in mind, though ... and if we don't try to achieve our goals either, wouldn't our lives feel so unfulfilled?

[ As a former terminally ill girl, she knew she had to make the most of her life. Even now, she carries that sentiment to heart. ]

Even if it's dangerous, I think I would like to make it a goal to see Mount Zand someday.

...You do have a point.

I imagine that one way or another, we will have to venture into the Wilds at some point in order to help heal the Bastion. Perhaps if that is so, I can try and guide you, although I know a friend who could take you there far more easily.

I'm certain it will happen sooner than later, at any rate. [He shakes his head, as if amused at something only he knows.] Anyway, I'm happy that you liked the story.
