Light years away from home, just my demons and I alone

[So hey. There's this girl. She's been in this place for a while, helped out with a lot of things, and today she got to help do something awesome! Cores are important to the Bastion after all, so that's a good thing.

Except she kind of... lit herself on fire and a lot of people saw it.

Anyone want to talk to her about that?

In all seriousness, Rin can be found after all that hubbub taking a break near the apartments, outside because she really doesn't want to be in her room right now. She's nursing a bit of a wound on her thigh from sliding on her legs under the bird earlier, but whatever road rash she got from doing so is starting to fade finally. Her sword is lying next to her in the grass, and she's just on her back, watching the odd sky above the Bastion quietly.

Mostly because her ears are still kind of ringing from what Crona did.

Ringing ears won't stop her from holding a conversation, though, if anyone cares to bother her, and she's in a decent mood given their accomplishments.]

[She never touched any of the statues. She always did everything she could to avoid doing just that. If she had she probably would have broken more than she already is.

But she dismisses that bit for what Bon said after, shaking her head frantically.]

No, don't you get it? You're smart! And strong! You're what these people need, not me!

Don't give me that crap!

[Whoops yelling again. Sorry Rin this is sensitive to him.]

Koneko is smart, and he isn't here! Okumura-sensei is more capable than any of us, and he's not here! Renzou's family fights with fire, and they didn't survive it either!

It's not about who is and isn't capable, it's fucking random!

[And that's the most infuriating part.]

[Rin winced visibly, mouth opening to argue, but the second she started her voice just died in her throat. Mouth closed, and opened again, but nothing came out.

Eventually her head dropped instead, shoulders slumping once more as the only thing that was finally muttered was a weak 'I'm sorry...'

For the first time in probably... ever, Bon's yelling wasn't met with the same. She really didn't know how to handle any of this, and knowing it was all random just made her feel sick.]

[Bon's steam is gone quickly, and he falls back, not able to argue anymore. It's too tiring, and they have so much other crap to take care of.

While laying back, he rests his arm over his eyes, mostly to block the light that never goes away but also because he doesn't want to look at Rin right now.]

Shit, don't go apologizing like that. It's not your fault.

[She really is a lot more broken than she's letting on. Marie has a point - putting children, even children like them in this situation is almost more of a burden than they should rightfully be forced to handle.

When she speaks again, her voice is quieter than it usually is, and she doesn't even bother looking up at Bon after he's fallen back.]

I know. I just-- I really do envy how smart you are. And I think you can do a lot more do these people than I can.

Brains mean jack all if you don't have the strength to back it up.

[No matter how much Rin envies Bon, she still can at least protect people. She can do way more than Bon can possibly do, and it pisses him off to no end.

Rin really needs to give herself more credit.]

[There had been things Rin had been avoiding bringing up, because if there was even a remote chance that even MORE things were different between their worlds she probably would have called it quits, pulled a Crona and hid in a corner for the rest of her life.

But the way Bon was talking... okay, maybe she did need to give herself more credit but there was a point when Bon needed to not be so hard on himself, too.]

... did we-- you and Okumura-kun [god that sounds so weird] go to Kyoto?

Yeah?

[He remembers Kyoto, but he's not sure why Rin is bringing it up, so there's a touch of confusion to his voice. He's not following her train of logic there, so he's not sure why there's such a sudden jump in conversation topic.

Unless Rin is trying to talk about less-serious things. That he can understand.]

I went, too. And if you guys went I can pretty much guess what happened. And what you did.

[She finally lifts her head, eyes a bit red from near-crying, but no tears actually on her cheeks.]

I was there, Bon. You're no different than the one I know and I saw what you did. I'unno where you got this idea that you're not strong but you are. And yeah, if he's anything like me he probably gave you shit and said stupid things about wantin' to see Kyoto Tower, but you were still amazing. You are strong.

[Fuck.

He has to turn his head away from Rin, because he doesn't want to see her or have her see him. It's hard, okay? He has a hard time accepting that he's strong when all he can think is 'not strong enough to save everyone.'

But he doesn't want to deal with this crushing disappointment in himself. He wishes he could be more carefree like Rin.]

...

It was still dumb, there's lots more to Kyoto than the tower.

... I know.

[She gets it. She's doing the same thing, not wanting anyone to know what she's dealing with inside, and having her own issues with confidence and feeling like she's just not good enough, for here or for home.

So... she drops it. There's no point in going back and forth when they're feeling so much of the same thing and refusing to budge on their own self perceived inadequacies.]

I had fun. I'm glad I got to see it with everyone.

[They're both kind of broken and need to grow up in that way. Maybe seeing that flaw in each other will help them overcome it in themselves.]

It was better than any of the class trips I had to take to it.

[Hopefully.]

Well yeah. Things like that are way more fun with friends, and when you don't have to follow some annoyin' tour guide.

[That gets a small, small chuckle from him. Oh the memories.]

Renzou always tried to ditch the class and go explore on his own.

Pft. Sounds like him! Did you have to drag him back?

Of course I did! Koneko was gonna have a heart attack. He kept on going on about how we'd get expelled.

Oh, was he yellin' like he always does? "Shima please!" Like that?

It was more high-pitched then.

[That's it. Rin can't take it. For as stressful as the day has been, this has brought out a much needed laugh. She cracks up, falling over on her side and clutching her stomach.]

[Bon isn't laughing, but his smile has come back.

This is a much better conversation than all their failures and how everyone is dead.]

You know, I've been wondering: you're a girl, but you're a guy in my world. Is anyone else different like that between our worlds?

[It really is.

Rin sits up, rubbing at her eyes while still chuckling quietly.]

Well... I'unno. We could find out?

[Now that he's feeling better, Bon will sit up too.]

I guess we could start with our classmates.

Renzou and Koneko are both boys, and Moriyama and Kamiki are girls.

Yup! Oh, what about Takara? And Kirigakure-sensei?

Takara's a boy, and Kirigakure-sensei is a girl.

[That last one is kind of hard to forget. Dem boobs.]

Okumura-sensei is a boy too.

[Seriously. So much envy...]
