Day 77:: Event - return home

Who: everyone and anyone
Open: Open
When: Day 77, late in the afternoon, after both groups have returned to the Bastion
Where: by the monument
What: With another core retrieved, it's time to choose what will be added to the Bastion. Also, other threads with NPCs will happen here.
Format: action
Warnings: none

[Even though today's mission was a success, it hardly felt like one. Marie had not been found, and two others- Shion and Nezumi- had gone missing during the mission. The NPCs by and large are upset at this turn of events: while finding a Core is good, losing people is not.

When everyone returns from the Skyway, the NPCs are gathered around the Monument, waiting for everyone there. After some time for discussions, Nathaniel steps forward.
]

I know it's kinda hard to talk about now, but we gotta do something about this core right away. After we do that, we can worry about the others.

After working with the Bastion a bit, I think I figured out how it prioritizes what gets fixed and when. I don't have it completely done yet, but I managed to isolate three of the high-priority items, so we can choose which of the three to fix next.

One of the things is electricity. I know living without power hasn't been easy, so with this we can start automating a lot of our daily tasks like washing and stuff, which would free up a lot of time for exploring the Skyway.

Another thing we could do is get a hospital built. We haven't had much trouble with it yet, thankfully, but a hospital would be really handy for when someone gets hurt. Even without a doctor here, just having the supplies would be great.

The last thing we can do is get a ranch built. Since we've got chickens 'n cows now, a ranch might be a good idea, since it'll give 'em a place to live, and all the stuff for taking care of 'em will be right there. We won't have to go out hunting for food or other stuff for the animals then.

Any of the three would be a good addition to what we've got now, so I'll leave it up to you guys to decide what to do.

((OOC: There are two threads below: one for voting on which improvement to get, and one for talking to NPCs. Besides that, you can have your characters respond to the post itself to talk to each other about what to do.

the voting thread will be open for 24 hours. At that time, we'll be closing the voting thread and whichever upgrade has the most votes will be the one chosen.))

Nathaniel-san... [ The tired Asian addresses the widely accepted leader, raising his hand briefly as he approaches. ]

I wanted to apologize for our failure to find Lady Marie, personally. Worse, we lost others, so focused were we on the goal we did not notice the departures. It grieves me, and I believe responsibility should be taken.

In regards to what we ought do with the core, any development will likely serve in some fashion, but if we are forced to vote, I would suggest a medical facility. The gentleman...Stein? His condition upon arriving to the Bastion highlights the point that not everyone will be so fortunate as to arrive unscathed. Nor are any of us likely to remain in good health, so long as forays into the Skyway remain necessary.

Now, if you will excuse me. I do hope today was worth it. [ He bows deeply, rises slowly and retreats in silence, his expression distant.>

Nathaniel.

[Not much of a greeting, but the fact that he bothered to remember the de-facto leader's name is at least somewhat of a sign of respect.]

While a hospital would certainly be beneficial, I believe that the ranch should be our first priority, given the dietary needs of some of our number.

...Good day to you.

[With that, he retreats to his basement. It's been a long day, and to lose three in a single day is more worrisome than he lets on.]

No one came up with any really good reasons why we need the other things.... So I'm going with ranch. Gives the cows somewhere to stay, and Ax needs it to eat, so we can wait for the other stuff.

[ Duke can heal, so as long as someone knows how to deal with colds or worse things more than "all the fluids ever", and they don't run into anything poisonous, the knight thinks that's needed most. ]

I've had this ready to go since this (...my!) morning, so... just to be awkward...

[lifting his hand in a "sorry, I'm cutting in" sort of gesture] Everyone has put forward some extremely valid points but... I'm still in favour of the hospital. While it is possible that things could change for the worse, we're managing for food right now. Illness and injury can strike a lot more suddenly.

It's not as if we're ruling out any of the other options right now - we're just stalling them for a while, right?

≪I require a pasture for grazing, and the animals need to be cared for. The ranch will be the best use of our resources.≫

Hey...

[Rin was quieter than usual when she approached Nathaniel. She really didn't seem like herself, but that was probably understandable, all things considered.]

So... I gotta admit I ain't really sure. All three of 'em would be good, and everyone's got their own ideas on what's gonna work best right now.

I know we can get other stuff later, but uh... I guess I'm gonna be the odd one out and vote for electricity. I mean it's cool if we don't get it 'cause I'm sure I'm gonna be out voted, but that's where I'm at...

[ We have to take care of the animals! I'm their guardian, and I demand it!

Or, in other words, a vote for meow-meow-meow-grumble-meow.

notduchess: (If that's the order...)

.... I have no idea what electricity is?

[ Says the knight. Is it terribly surprising- ]

We used Aer and blastia to do lighting and heating and whatnot. And I don't really get what a hospital would provide? Supplies, to me, sounds like gels and splints and ... clean bandages.

[ Just... awkwardly scratching one side of the head. ]

So I like the idea of a ranch, just because I think getting everything out from underfoot is a good idea. Feel free to explain why the others are a good, to change my mind-
superdrowningskills: (Hmm.)

I am also unaware of what electricity is, and have no experience with hospitals.

[About what's expected of a man born in rural Wallachia in the early fourteen hundreds, really.]

It would be preferable to have more information before I make my decision.

I do not know what electricity is, either. However, hospitals are a worthwhile venture. They are large, communal places of learning and practicing science and medicine. Usually more well equipped than a standard apothecary or physician.

[ The onmyoji offers helpfully, rubbing his hands free of dirt and inspecting his robes wearily. He didn't say much, but the losses had affected him as well. Not as sharply as some of the others, but it was saddening, and Seimei was not immune to the sorrow of others. ]

I am sure all of the possibilities provide equal advantage...and I am certain all of you will make a reasonable choice. I am going to inform Nathaniel of my choice and retire. Please forgive me my brevity. I wish you all a good rest.

[ The oppressive gloom settling over the majority was affecting him too deeply, and Seimei had no desire to suffer it long. People mourned in their own ways. Once, he might have gone to his one friend. Now? He would sit in his partially constructed home, alone, and meditate on events. ]

[Rin hadn't been taking the news of two more gone very well at all, and as much as she tried to hide it, it was written on her face.

She kept her attention to the discussion at hand for the time being, though. Later. Later she could have a moment to herself, and grieve with tears and anger and sorrow she didn't want anyone else to see.]

Electricity is power. It keeps things runnin', gives us light... heat, if we got the right appliances for it. Hospitals are like what Seimei said, and for injuries and illness and a lotta times used for long-term stays, if someone's got somethin' that can't be recovered from quickly.

The ranch would be good but... eletricity would be a jump start on a lotta things we're still missin'. I'm gonna vote for electricity.

[Kaoru slides into the assembled group as discreetly as possible and not without an uncomfortable creep of guilt inside that he hasn't been pulling his weight - especially seeing how wrung out everyone is. Their expressions say that the search-and-rescue mission for Marie was a bust... not to mention his neighbours' disappearances, too.

His eyes momentarily catch on Seimei's departing figure and he is almost about to call out to him, but thinks better of it. The onmyoji seems to need his space and Kaoru doesn't want to keep bothering him like a needy child.

Hoping that his lateness will go unremarked upon, he carefully clears his throat to chip in, securing Tama-chan in his arms.]

If someone gets seriously sick or injured - or arrives here in such a state - we should have the appropriate facilities to treat them. We can argue that electricity might help us towards that, rather than just being a means of making life easier but... I think we've been very lucky this far. I'm no medical genius and I'm not doubting anyone's abilities but should something severe happen on the Skyway it... it may not be possible for us to fix it with the way things are now -unless someone happens to be able to magically heal all ills.

I know it's always a possibility in this world that people's health or lives could be at stake, but that's no excuse for unpreparedness, especially now, when there's a chance that we could change that. As much as I'd hate to vote against electricity anything other than a hospital would be a gamble so... hospital first. Everything else can follow after that.

[Kaoru makes some good points, and Bon is nodding in agreement.]

And even if someone has healing powers, they might not work on things like illnesses. At least with a hospital we'll have medicine to help if anyone gets sick. Though without a doctor, we might not be able to use some parts of it.

But the other thing to consider is that hospitals use electricity too. I'm not sure how everything would be sterilized without the equipment to do so.

[Ax was unable to go with the group retrieving the Core, and so perhaps he has no right to determine what will happen with it, but he does need to speak.]

≪A "ranch" would have land associated with it?≫

[Because if there's one thing an Andalite needs, it's an open field.]

≪I have been able to find temporary means of acquiring nutrients, but my species requires open fields for grazing.≫

[Ax would rather not continue to barely get by when it comes to food requirements.]

[He's got a good point. Damn... as much as she would have loved to finally have some power to the Bastion that wasn't Core-specific, she can't really feed everyone the way she has been. Even Seimei has been going without just because they were lacking certain things.

Sighing tiredly, she drags a hand through her messy hair, wincing at the twinge of pain from where the Scumbag had gotten her with it's acidic sludge.

Right, she was going to have to take care of that later.]

He's right... a-and the next time we find a Core we can add somethin' else. I mean, there's more out there...

For basic cleaning, you just boil everything. I know that much. And all you need for boiling water is a pot without leaks and a fire, at the minimum.

[ Again, just scratching the side of the head, then tugging once on long hair in irritation. Dammit, this is something the knight would rather not deal with. ]

I can't do anything for actual illnesses, but ... [ An awkward shrug. ]

Feeding everyone is fairly important. We can keep a spot penned off for the cows, so you don't have to share.

[ And move it every so often, so the grass can grow and they keep healthy cows and what-not.

Also Duke sees that tug of pain. Rin, do you want healing?
]

[Electricity is immediately out; even those used to its apparent conveniences agree that the other two options take priority. That just leaves Alucard to weigh the other two options. On one hand, the hospital does sound useful... On the other...]

I agree. Trained doctors were rather difficult to find outside of cities in my world - and hospitals even moreso - but humanity lived on regardless. Given that we have some measure of magic for healing, I believe keeping everyone properly fed is a higher priority than medical supplies at the moment.

[He's aware that he probably sounds a bit unconcerned with the plight of the man that arrived injured or any that might become injured, but a community cannot survive forever on what they currently eat, and they have someone with special dietary needs among them. If anyone wants to hate him for this decision, fine. At least then they'd dislike him for who and not what he is.]

[Rin frowned tiredly at the group, knowing that they were still divided, and she wasn't helping with her inability to settle on a decision like she normally would.

Quietly, she got up and left, saying nothing to anyone. She would talk to Nathaniel, and find somewhere to think for a while after that.]
