Let the Festival Begin [Day 143 | Day 144]

For the past week or so, it may feel like to some that the Bastion is gearing up for something. And not anything bad, either. Something good and oh so needed. It's not just the people, the Caels and the Ura that are aware of what the coming days would mean if the world was still intact. It's like the very Bastion itself has suddenly gained new life, and there's a power over it that's greater than any person, creature or Core.

Anyone who is still awake as dawn breaks over the Bastion may find themselves inexplicably tired for no reason at all, and unable to give in to an intense need to close their eyes, just for a moment.

When everyone wakes, and I do mean everyone, the Bastion will be transformed. Decorations, lights strung across every angle, wreaths, tables with colorful cloths over them, streamers and banners and so much stuff just seemingly out of nowhere! The entire Bastion, suddenly a vibrant, beautiful place for a celebration. And not just any celebration.

You know, old man, if you keep staring at it, it's still not going to grow legs and jump into your mouth.

[Oh look, there's a battered Colin, has been doing some bull wrangling?]

You want me to grab you a platter or ten?

Drem, Colin.

[He looks over the other's state, a little curious and able to guess just what he's been doing. Good for him. Bull wrangling keeps you healthy. If it doesn't gore you first, anyway.]

That would be much appreciated. [A heavy sigh.] I thought I would attempt to retrieve food on my own, but the consequences seemed too likely.

[Colin grins, and starts grabbing up the largest serving trays of meat he can find.]

I can't speak for other people, but I wouldn't see any problem with you serving yourself. Festivals exist to enjoy yourself. A little bit of a mess is to be expected.

Yes, I know that little, in your case, is in the eye of the beholder.

[Colin is in absolutely chipper spirits. Being able to work and burn calories like he has today is something he has MISSED... and since his diet and a dragon's diet are almost completely incompatible, he sees no problem in giving Paarth all the meat he can find.]

Quite. [An amused tone again- yes, if he tried to dig in, he'd probably break the table. For now, he'll avoid that.]

It is good to see this place filled with more life. It has felt zegran, quiet, these past few days save for the excitement of those native here.

[His eyes track each meat thrown on the platter.]

I've been saying we need a morale booster for some time, but I'm not much for actually coming up with those things. Happiness is different to everyone, and my understanding of it never meshes with anyone else.

[Let's see... a turkey, some roast, pork haunch, enough fish to fill a sushi bar...]

How's this look? You gonna have any digestion problems with any of this?

[He holds up the loaded tray for Paarth's inspection.]

Food seems to be the easiest solution.

[Everyone needs food, after all. Speaking of- he leans in closer, nostrils flaring as it takes it all in, and then gives a nod.]

This is all meat I have eaten in the past. My thanks.

[He opens his mouth wide so that Colin can dump it all in. It's certainly a big enough opening.]

Food, music, if I could figure out how to approach someone about a talent show that would probably be good.

I'd love a vid theater or a VR... uh... virtual reality parlor, but both of those are probably a little advanced for this place.

[Colin upends the platter into Paarth's mouth without so much as a second thought.]

Hey, think nothing of it. And feel free to point me in the direction of anything you really want. I've got plenty of time. I'm assuming you want just meat, but if you want anything else, point that out to me too. From the looks of it, the gods are being generous.

[He's not even going to pretend to understand what you mean by vids or virtual reality or anything, Colin. Just let grampa dragon eat his food in peace. Although there's not really much chewing at all... Paarthurnax simply rolls the tongue about in his mouth to enjoy the taste of well cooked meat before swallowing it all whole.]

I am unfamiliar with many of the other foods. Strunjud- Tris has introduced me to the concept of cookies, but I do not know of much else.

Let me grab you some cheeses then, at the very least. Meat and cheese is a very complimentary flavor.

[Yes, Colin is going to keep serving Paarth as much food as he can fit on a tray. He's not a culinary genius by any means, and you don't want him actually cooking for you, but he knows flavor, and he knows what's good. One giant platter of meat and several wedges of cheese, coming up!]

[Goodness knows dragons aren't exactly cooks... most of the time. Depending loosely on your definition of 'cook'.]

[Just like before, he accepts all of this into his large maw and takes the time to taste it before it goes right down his gullet.]

It is interesting. I have always known the giants produced cheese from their mammoths, but I never had a moment to try such a thing.

[Even if none of that was exactly mammoth cheese, but hey. It's still cheese.]

If my empire ever finds this place, I'll have to introduce you to my wife's adoptive father. He's both a dragon, and something of a gourmet chef. I actually look forward to going over to their place for events, I NEVER leave hungry.

Mammoth cheese, you say? Hmmm, I don't think I've ever had an opportunity to try mammoth milk, or even elephant milk, so I can't even begin to imagine what that must be like. High calcium content, I'd imagine. It probably depends on the aging process, too...

[THOUGHT EXPERIMENT, HO!]

Anyway! More cheese? Or just meat?

[The next platter will be to Paarth's specifications, after that, Colin will experiment with more flavor combinations.[

It would be interesting to see. Meeting another of my kind, no matter how distant, would also be a pleasure.

[Even if they're not from Skyrim and don't know the voice, Paarthurnax certainly won't turn away such an opportunity. As far as he's concerned, it's no doubt a similar situation to the mer of his homeworld. Most, save perhaps for the Argonians, were all from the same place eventually but things simply changed.]

I will try more of the cheese, zu'u lost pogaan kogaani.

[He'll also watch as Colin keeps coming up with different ideas. It's always interesting to watch a very smart person do such a thing, even in more mundane situations.]

[Colin looks at Paarthurnax for several moments, studying him and making considerations even as he talks.]

Then I will make sure to arrange the meeting. You're one of the few people I am comfortable saying will live long enough to see a rescue party arrive.

Once we've finished with this feast, I'm going to need to go find Rin. I realize that you've probably never had a sandwich in your life, which just seems like a crime you never even guessed was committed against you.

A large deep dish pizza crust would probably be just the bread needed to hold the amount of meat, cheese, and toppings to make it good.

[Gather gather gather, prep prep prep, feed!]

I will admit crimes being committed against me did indeed never once cross my mind.

[Pizza crust? Okay, sure, he'll just let you do what you wanna do, Colin. It looks like you're having fun, and Paar is getting fed, so he really has no objections here.]

Sorry, sorry, I'm rambling. I've never actually studied the logistics of dragon-sized meals before. I'm having to think of things that I know are in the right scale.

From there, it just becomes a matter of preparing them properly. ... You're gonna want Rin to do that. I can do many things, but cooking is NOT among them.

Then perhaps a show of teamwork is recommended. Both your skills combined should accomplish the goal you have in mind.

My thoughts exactly.

[Mammoth flank steaks piled high, surrounded with cheeses, and topped with barbequed pulled pork. Open wide, Paarth! Before this really makes my player hungry! ~~Too late you little punk.~~]

Rin and I still have our clashes to work out, but we can work together decently enough.

Then I look forward to it-

[Oh hey more food. Paarthurnax takes it in, and then gives a pause as he focuses on this taste a bit more. Huh. Barbeque. This is a very new experience. ~~And not the mun projecting on a desire for pulled pork at all.~~]

You liked that last one? Yeah, that's Barbequed meat. An ancient cooking technique coupled with modern experimentation to create some fantastic flavors.

[Colin's a little smug about that one. Even if he can't cook, even if he doesn't like meat, he STILL appreciates a good barbeque. Barbequed corn, if nothing else, is AMAZING.]

It is delicious. I have not had many seasonings on most of my meat, but this I believe I could appreciate.

Well, there we go. Now I have an idea what to steer onto your plate.

It's quite an amazing process, really. The smoke itself adds flavor to the meat, and then the spices and seasonings further bring it out. And then there's the sauces...

[Barbeque. The dragon likes barbeque. Looks like Colin knows what to tell Rin to cook towards in the future.]

[Colin, you have probably figured out by now that Paarthurnax will listen to whatever rambles you want to get out. He listens and nods.]

It does indeed sound fascinating. Rin's skill must be further appreciated, then, if she is capable of such things.

[And Colin does indeed appreciate it. So few people do listen, and he has to remind himself constantly that his rambles are usually unwelcome around other people. Usually after he irritates someone.]

I'm sure she could show you how to do it. Barbequed mammoth actually sounds like it would be a great tasting meal, to the carnivores in our midst.

With your flame, and her knowledge, I bet the two of you could set up a giant barbeque grill.

You want me to grab you a few more platters? I can't imagine I've managed to fill you up yet.

Yes. You are welcome to leave them here as you go to speak to her. So long as they are not on the table, I should manage well enough.

[He might eat a platter, but that's alright.]

[Colin immediately starts loading up a few more platters with assorted meats and cheeses. He's paying special attention to barbeque stuff, but he'll grab a little bit of everything so Paarth is free to experiment. He sets the platters out before Paarth, and he gives the dragon a beaming grin.]

[As if the Bastion is all that large anyway.]
