[not that he doesn't trust you, but you'll have a lot more than an angry anklegator to deal with should you accidentally roast him]

I uhm... w-well see my flames don't just burn, they can purify, too. Like if you had some sort of blight from a demon. But I figure either one would still hit whatever barrier you might have, right?
[That's slightly less dangerous.]
no subject
...all right, let's try this. If it doesn't work I'm not throwing more shards in that thing for healing powers that I might not actually get.
no subject
There was one Bon and I fought together called the Impure King that was giant mass of gross and poison that was tryin' to kill the people of Kyoto!
[Hey at least he trusts her. And this would be a good exercise for her as well, given what happened last time she used her powers.]
Alright. Get ready, okay?
no subject
So I'll just uh... just throw up my hands and hope for the best.
no subject
[Seriously. She does not want to ever have to do that again. It was gross and exhausting she'd rather not think about all the confidence issues she was having before it.]
Right. And I'll... make sure I don't hurt you.
[Rin took a step back as well, pulling in a deep breath as she tried to focus that constantly burning fire within.
Don't hurt him... he's a friend. Don't burn friends...
Slowly, blue flames started to appear around her, low and flickering at first. Another breath in and out, and she directed a small burst of cleansing fire outward.
If it bounced off the shield, good, but if it didn't at worse Kaoru would simply feel very warm all of a sudden.]
no subject
...did it work? I mean, I guess I'm not on fire, so it might have worked...
no subject
You did it, Kaoru!
no subject
[carefully extending one of his hands to see if he can touch the other side] Is it still working now?
[...this is kind of cool, but at the same time completely surreal. People from his world do not get powers.]
no subject
[It's not so weird for Rin. Buddhist monks can create protective barriers, regular girls can summon and tame demons... but she can understand how it would be weird for Kaoru. A year ago, she never would have believed any of it.]
no subject
Okay, okay, that's good. I should test it out a bit, figure out how it works, but... but all right, this is good!
no subject
[she does have a sword]
no subject
Be gentle with me.
no subject
[Actually she has two swords, and rather than risk breaking whatever shielding he has with her flames and the hit of a blade, she goes for the non-enchanted sword that she carries at her hip instead.]
Ready?
no subject
[though he still maintains that throwing pebbles would be easier]
no subject
Right. And try not to flinch this time!
[She starts swinging, hesitant with the first swipe. Once it bounces off harmlessly she goes for stronger hits, blade ricocheting off the shield with each one.]
no subject
[at least he doesn't have to dodge - even as Tama-chan steps out from behind Rin and starts her own offensive, jabbing at the shield with her horn.]
Double attack. Great. Well at least I know my feet are safe, too...
no subject
[Another few hits, the shield remains, though the last slash down does get a bit of a flicker in the translucent barrier.]
It's pretty strong. That's good.
no subject
Does it work handsfree - like, if I drop my hands, does the shield drop, too? Mind if I try that?
no subject
[She gives him a teasing smile, knowing neither of them thought of one another like that.]
I think I know where it should stop, so yeah. Try it.

[She steps back, readying another swing. A spin of the blade in her hand and she brings it down as if she's going to hit him in the head.
Of course if the shield still works it will just bounce, but if it even passes through where it was stopping before she has enough control to pull back and avoid actually striking him.]
no subject
All right, not bad. Don't particularly want to have to face down the monsters with only this between me and them, but at least I know it will hold them off. [a sigh of relief] ...and I have some way to protect myself.
[Tama-chan continues jabbing her horn against the shield, enjoying the game. It will probably give out soon.]
no subject
[Rin nudged Tama-chan with her foot gently.]
Save your strength for a good fight, Tama. Pickin' on your ma-- ... dad ain't any fun if you accidentally hurt him.
no subject
Owch [the shield gives out at about that moment, though Tama-chan had thoughtfully switched to ramming with her snout and the side of her horn, so the impact isn't as painful as it could have been. Still pretty bad, though - Tama-chan runs around behind him as he drops to his knees, rubbing his shin] Jeez, save it for the monsters, little one. [...that's definitely going to bruise.]
