[Donut trees, entire buildings, chocolate jerky cows...it was entirely ridiculous, and yet all of it Jane had seen with her own eyes. Their existence and the powers of the shards had bothered her more with every new thing she came across, and now she wanted to test it out for herself...but to do that, she'd need her own shards.

From the Skyway.

Though she'd come from there, just like everyone had, it was safe to say that she was hesitant to return for any amount of time. She knew there were supposedly monsters, and that the amulet she'd been given would help make paths for her to walk on, but that wasn't much to go on. If Jane was going back into that place, she wanted to be prepared, and where better to find folks who frequented the Skyway than the Monument that turned their shards into things? So that's where she is, approaching all who pass by to ask,]

Excuse me, but what do folks usually bring along with them to the Skyway if they want to look for shards?

<Yeah. Exactly. That's why I have to keep looking.>

...Then...I hope you find them, Tobias. I truly do.

[She smiles sadly.] I'll...try. I can promise that I'll try.

<Good. That's all anyone can ask for, right?>

[Yeah well his wrinkly green butt didn't have to deal with the Calamity.]

I suppose so.

...We should probably move onto a less depressing topic, shouldn't we? Otherwise I doubt we'll be able to get much done.

<Yeah, true.>

[He takes off again, flapping hard to get some air, and wheels around again.]

So...what is it like to be a bird, exactly?

<It's pretty great, actually. I mean aside from the 'no thumbs' and the food problems, flying is amazing. Seeing the world from up above... it gives you a lot of perspective in multiple ways. And you can go wherever you want, as long as you have enough strength to fly.>

I see! Flying is pretty amazing...er, I got to do so about twice, under some...pretty unusual circumstances, actually. But it was still very freeing, in a sense.

<You did? How?>

[He's kind of curious.]

The first time was in a dream. Well, it wasn't a normal dream, it was more like...another state of being, I guess. The thing is, my friends and I were all playing a game, and part of the mechanisms allowed us to fly in certain areas. And the second time...

[And she's just realizing how crazy this all sounds........now.]

Er - well - let's say I wasn't quite in my right mind.

<You're talking to a telepathic bird. I don't think I have any room to say what sounds weird.>

Oh - gosh, um, perhaps that's true...

[Hey, she won't judge if he says something's weird, because it is. Sburb is weird.]

<It's okay. Weird is kind of normal around here, if that makes sense.>

...It...does, actually. This whole situation is kind of weird, in a way, and I don't think a place filled with people from so many varied kinds of worlds could ever be 'normal'. It'd be impossible, wouldn't it?

<Pretty much. And it's kind of nice that once people get over the talking mind-to-mind thing, people will actually have a conversation with me.>

Well I imagine it would become fairly lonely for you if they didn't, which wouldn't be fair at all.

Is there anyone else here that can speak that way, or in some other way besides talking?

<There's someone else here - she's got really long red hair. I think her name's Megaera? Other than that I don't know.>

[As strange as this mind-talking thing is, Tobias certainly doesn't seem like he'd deserve to talk to just one person for the rest of his life.]

So, you said you can turn into other animals, too, especially to fight. What kinds specifically can you turn into?

[notachickenhawk]

<Well... there's some aliens that I use for fighting morphs sometimes. I've got a lot of other ones, too. I acquired Paarthurnax - you know, the dragon that lives here? - so I can turn into him. But I can turn into some sea life like dolphins or whales or squid, bugs like flies or mosquitoes, a polar bear, a goat, a couple different humans, a rabbit, a bat, a bull... a bunch of different stuff.>

I have actually just learned about the dragon who lives here, though I haven't seen him yet.

Have you tried getting "morphs" for any other animals unique to the Bastion, like the mammoths? Or one of the monsters on the Skyway?

[notachickenhawk]

<He's really nice. He's been teaching us some of his language. I can actually write it okay, because dragon talons and hawk talons aren't that different.>

[At the question though, he laughs a bit.]

<Yeah. There's something from Zuko's world called an ostrich horse that I acquired, and I got an anklegator on the Skyway. There's a small one in the Bastion that's someone's pet, but the one we ran into was a lot bigger. Animals get kind of tired and go into a trance when they're acquired - usually - so I used that to help people get away from it.>

[This is something she's gotta see to believe.]

Really? That...makes a lot of sense, actually. I doubt it'd be useful if whatever you wanted to morph into thrashed about before you even managed to acquire it.

<Yeah. It's a pretty cool language, designed with talon marks in mind. But... whoever built that into the morphing technology was really smart. I don't know how it was developed at all.>
