[Donut trees, entire buildings, chocolate jerky cows...it was entirely ridiculous, and yet all of it Jane had seen with her own eyes. Their existence and the powers of the shards had bothered her more with every new thing she came across, and now she wanted to test it out for herself...but to do that, she'd need her own shards.

From the Skyway.

Though she'd come from there, just like everyone had, it was safe to say that she was hesitant to return for any amount of time. She knew there were supposedly monsters, and that the amulet she'd been given would help make paths for her to walk on, but that wasn't much to go on. If Jane was going back into that place, she wanted to be prepared, and where better to find folks who frequented the Skyway than the Monument that turned their shards into things? So that's where she is, approaching all who pass by to ask,]

Excuse me, but what do folks usually bring along with them to the Skyway if they want to look for shards?

[Nanaki happens to be by the monument because she was actually going to use some of her shards to get a new pair of running shoes, so this is actually a good time to explain it.]

It depends on what you're good at. It's dangerous out there, there's monsters all over, so if you can fight you want to take a weapon. But if you can't fight then you'll want whatever it is that can help you avoid monsters entirely.

For me, I can't really fight, but I can run. So I always make sure I have a good pair of shoes, as well as a bag of distractions to use if I need them.

Oh - hello again! [Jane remembers Nanaki! A smile for you, Nanaki.] I figured a weapon was a must-have in that place. I do recall hearing there are monsters out there. But distractions do sound like a good idea! What kind of distractions are good to bring?

Well, food usually distracts them, but recently I've been using these.

[She pulls out a small stinkbomb.]

They cost shards, though, so I try to use them only when I'm about to get trapped in by monsters. The smell keeps them away.

Stinkbombs! How clever! Can you make smokebombs, too?

Sure! The Bastion can make just about anything, if you have the shards for it. I knew how to make them back home, though, so I try just to get the ingredients, so I don't spend more shards than I have to.

That's a good idea. Do they use anything that you wouldn't have to spend shards on? Like, anything you can pick up somewhere?

Yep! Fortunately most of the stuff for it is pretty easy to find, though as we explore more of the Skyway it's becoming harder and harder to get some things. I think eventually I'll have to start buying them, since it's not like there's any big factories making stuff anymore.

[Tobias looks down at Jane, watching her ask people. Once she's free, he calls out to her.]

Jane pauses for a moment, looking around to try and find the source of that...voice. Did she hear it, or was it in her head? It most certainly wasn't her own thinking. Feeling a little foolish, she calls out,] Er, hello...?

[Tobias flaps his wings from the building he's perched on.]

<Up here. Yes, the bird. No, you're not going insane.>

[She can just make out the flapping and she turns, catching sight of...well, wow, yeah, that is indeed a bird. Some kind of hawk, even.

You're...um, not fooling around with me, are you?

[Hey, she's not dismissing Tobias entirely. Thank the chocolate jerky cows for that.]

<No, I'm not. It's a long story. But yeah, can you fight? You might want to take someone else with you too, even if you can. Safety in numbers and all that.>

I can fight just fine, actually, but I do agree, there's great safety in numbers. Do folks usually congregate for these outings, or...?

Skyway, huh?

You want food, water, and rope at the very least. Extra food, in fact. Many of the things out there are hungry. If you have some spare food, you can often avoid a fight by dropping some food and running.

Can you fight?

[Ahah! Another face Jane knows!] Oh, hello!

[Food, water...very basic supplies. Rope? Yes, she supposes that could be useful.] Yes, I know how to fight. I've got...well, it's sort of like a big trident, but I'm quite proficient in it.

[He grins.]

Don't see many people who fancy spears of any sort any more. Dad would love you.

Anyway. Yeah, those are the big three. You can get real tired out there, too. So it's best if you don't go alone. Several groups usually go out every day to bring back salvage or shards.

Obviously, a bag of some sort will help too. Really, it's going to depend on where you're going.

Hoo hoo! Well, it started out as more of a fencing-type weapon, but as things went on, it sort of ended up getting longer and longer - not on its own, of course, that'd be silly, but you know how it is, moving up and changing equipment...

[A bag? She frowns a little.] Wouldn't a sylladex be much easier?

Hey, if you're comfortable with it, that's enough for me. Too many people here are still learning how to handle their weapons. It's nice to have someone along who can handle their own in a pinch.

And I can't say I'm familiar with that word. What's a sylladex?

Really? Huh...I guess, I assumed since gathering shards and such is so important, more folks would be able to fight on their own.

[Augh, that's right - different worlds.] Um, well, it's sort of like an inventory system. They were, ah, quite ubiquitous where I'm from, some bordering on the absurd, but they can hold far more than just a plain old bag. I can show you, if you like.

[Rin is used to getting questions, especially from unfamiliar faces since the newbies are the most likely to still be in the "question everything" stage of arrival. Still, she's in the middle of carrying a stack of supplies in several high crates that look like they'd be far too heavy for some one of her size, which results in having to peek around the edge of them just so she won't be answering through them.]

Oh uh... weapons, food and water and beddin' if you're gonna be out there a while... somethin' to carry anythin' you find and wanna take back with you. Stuff like that. Though anyone here is gonna tell you that the most important thing to have with you is another person, or a whole team. Bad shit happens if you go alone...

[And she knows from experience.]

[Most of these things Jane has heard from others she's questioned, but the bedding one is new. She wants to ask just how long some folks stay out on the Skyway to warrant bedding, but...that's an awful lot of crates.]

[Rin carefully sets them down on the ground near her feet, making sure she doesn't wind up dropping any. That would be a lot of kitchen supplies scattered if one of those broke.]

Just be careful. Like I said, they're pretty heavy.
