[Donut trees, entire buildings, chocolate jerky cows...it was entirely ridiculous, and yet all of it Jane had seen with her own eyes. Their existence and the powers of the shards had bothered her more with every new thing she came across, and now she wanted to test it out for herself...but to do that, she'd need her own shards.

From the Skyway.

Though she'd come from there, just like everyone had, it was safe to say that she was hesitant to return for any amount of time. She knew there were supposedly monsters, and that the amulet she'd been given would help make paths for her to walk on, but that wasn't much to go on. If Jane was going back into that place, she wanted to be prepared, and where better to find folks who frequented the Skyway than the Monument that turned their shards into things? So that's where she is, approaching all who pass by to ask,]

Excuse me, but what do folks usually bring along with them to the Skyway if they want to look for shards?

<Both. It depends on the day, really. Some days I'm not feeling so hopeful.>

What are some good signs of folks out there? Erm, I mean, are there certain parts of the Skyway that have been thoroughly explored enough to notice when you come across new parts that might have someone in them?

<Most of the places close to here seem to not have people... but people come in off the Skyway all the time and they wouldn't know where to go if they didn't see the Bastion. So I have no idea. But yeah the area around the Bastion I know... kind of well.>

Has anyone ever tried to draw up a map of the place?

[Cartographer she is not, but Jane is nothing short of curious.]

<I don't think so. The land shifts around too much to really make anything really permanent.>

The land shifts?

[Jane takes a moment to think about that. It's not...actually all that strange, really. After all, their amulets can draw land to them, can't it? So why couldn't the bigger chunks move around?]

Hm...I see...

<Yeah. Aerial views help, though. If I had a camera and some way to develop it I could take pictures.>

You could always make one with shards, couldn't you? Or, erm, are you saving yours for something else?

<I'm trying to save up to help my friend. He wants dogs here.>

Oh! That's very sweet of you!

[Dogs would be nice, she thinks. Yes. Dogs, and not asshole cats.]

<His species has a very close connection to the dogs from my home world, so he's hoping it'll stay the same if he finds dogs here. I don't... know that it will, but I want to help.>

[Are there dog people here now? What?]

<Yeah he's... he looks human, but he's not. But it's not my business to tell you more about that since... it's kind of personal.>

A-Alright. That's...understandable.

Well...if dogs are what will make him happy, then I hope you can bring dogs here, soon...

<Yeah. I like keeping some shards around for emergencies, too.>

[You never know if there's going to be another plague or something.]

That's a good idea. How many would be an ideal emergency fund, you think?

<A few hundred? I blew all of my shards on medicine at one point, and while I don't mind, if other people can share the load for something like that we can get more without totally taking out someone's supply.>

Oh gosh! That does sound like something worth chipping in for. Was it for a medicine stockpile?

[notachickenhawk]

<No. There was some kind of plague that people caught out on the Skyway, and we had to go find an antidote. I flew it back since I could go faster than the people walking, and we had to get the Monument to make it right away so I didn't exactly have time to go asking for donations.>

Oh...gosh, I heard about that. That's definitely no situation in which you can ask for donations...

<Yeah. But I don't need much. Just space to fly and some prey I can catch. It's not like I need indoor plumbing or computers or electricity.>

That's true...but you can get by without those things. I mean, people did so before they were invented.

[Though, indoor plumbing? Something she'd rather not go without.]

I take it those were some things people have spent their shards on here?

[notachickenhawk]

<Some of them. Cores - those really big shards - can help make big changes like that. I guess you could do that if you had enough, but I think it'd take a lot.>

And I take it cores aren't as common as regular shards. I mean, if they've got that kind of strength, there's no way they can be easy to find.

<Yeah, exactly. We can find one maybe once every month or so, which is still a pretty good rate.>
