[It took a lot of shards, and a lot of work, but it was worth all of that in the end. With the eggs they'd found at the broken Daycare Center getting so close to hatching, and their Pokemon numbers growing, staying in the apartments was just not going to continue to be a viable option. So the two trainers put their heads together, and after a lot of discussion, planning, counting shards and re-planning they had managed to come up with an entirely new Daycare Center of their own, complete with a yard and living area on the second floor.

And there it was, a new house standing on a new section of land in a slightly expanded Bastion, and after some shuffling around of personal belongings out of the tower apartments, N, Hilda, Anna, and all their Pokemon and eggs were successfully relocated to this new location.

So if anyone is making their way around the south quadrant of the Bastion today, this new house with its strange creatures playing happily in the yard is likely to catch your attention.

<Not everyone would do that kind of thing. I mean, people here are nice, but... you never know with some people. So it's good that you're doing that.>

[He turns his head so he can preen a bit, though he doesn't stop talking.]

<I saw a bunch of eggs around. They're all going to be Pokemon?>

[Too big for any kind of bird he knows... and no, he's not going to sit on them. That's just... weird.]

Yeah, they are. It's kind of crazy to think about, huh?

[ She smiles a little. Okay, so, she's tired, but Tobias is nice to talk to, even if the way he talks to her is a little strange. ]

They're all gonna hatch into different types, too. We'll have a lot of them.

<I might be able to help, a little. I used to have a cat.>

[... Oh wait. He should explain that.]

<I wasn't always a bird. I used to be human. It's kind of a long story.>

[ She's interested, though. ]

I've got some time, if you want to tell it ... I'd like to hear it.

<... Basically an alien gave us this ability to fight against a different species of aliens. The second kind - the Yeerks - were taking over people. They crawl into your brain and move your body, use your voice...>

[He hunches down a bit. It's kind of depressing to talk about.]

<The ability lets us turn into any animal we touch. But you have to turn back before two hours are over, or you get stuck. I... got stuck. I got given the ability back by a really powerful being, but that normally doesn't happen.>

Oh ... So you can become a human again now if you want?

[ She's a little curious to see what Tobias looks like as a human. ]

Still, that's a lot to put onto you, fighting something like that.

[ ... She knows a little something about having a huge something on her plate. ]

<Yeah.>

[It's not that impressive, unfortunately.]

<We all do what we can. I bet there's a lot of people who had to fight for things here.>

Yeah ... there really are.

[ She's one of them. She doesn't wanna talk about it. ]

<Yeah.>

[Welp.]

<If you need help here, let me know? I might not know a lot about taking care of Pokemon, but I understand animal instincts pretty well.>

I'll definitely be sure to call on you if we need the help.

[ She smiles at him. ]

My boyfriend actually can talk with Pokemon, so that's really helpful too.

<... Huh. Really? That's really cool.>

Yeah, it's an ability that isn't very common, even in our world. N's one of the very, very few who can understand Pokemon on that level.

<I'll bet. People can't normally communicate with animals in my world, either. Not like... with speech, at least.>

There are some trainers who are with Pokemon enough to sort of understand them, but it's not quite the same. I can usually understand more what Pokemon are feeling than anything, and that helps me to get some idea of what they're trying to say. It's still kinda hard to tell sometimes, though.

<Yeah, I get it. I can kind of figure out what other animals are 'saying' based on instinct, but even like this I only have a hawk's instinct to go on. I can't actually 'speak' hawk or something.>

[... It makes things a little more lonely at times, but it's not like hawks talk about books or movies or human things.]

Oh, that's gotta be kinda rough, actually ... to be a hawk and yet not be able to communicate with other hawks.

Though you're also human, so I guess it makes some sense ...

I'm sure N has to explain things like that to the Pokemon sometimes, too. I know I've had to do that occasionally to Emboar when it was clear he didn't understand something.

<They seem really smart. I used to have a cat, and he was smart but... not on the same level.>

[Dude mostly just slept and draped on his legs when he was trying to do homework.]

<But Ax was just... from another planet. Literally. So it was more of a cultural thing.>

Ah, I see ... cultural barriers can be kinda hard, too.

<Yeah. It's kind of interesting to share cultural things, but... it doesn't happen as often as it should.>

No, it really doesn't. I remember meeting some people back home who were from completely different regions, and I wish I would have spent more time getting to know them.

<... Yeah, I know.>

[He's... trying not to think of it.]

[ And now what follows is an awkward silence. She really doesn't want to think about the state of their worlds, either. ]

<... I know my friends wouldn't have let something like this go past without fighting. I'm sure there's a way to fix things.>

[Hope's the only thing that's kept them going these past couple of years. He can't afford to give up on it now.]
