[So. A bunch of people left the Bastion on Day 156 to go to the Observatory, get some things, and possibly kill a giant plant. But not everyone went. In fact, there are a lot of people still in the Bastion, for various reasons.

And on the night of Day 156, when most people were sleeping, someone broke into Nathaniel's room and tore the place apart.

They were quiet about it, so as to keep people from stumbling upon them while they work, but they did not even try to hide the mess. They left Nathaniel's door and window open, and anyone who goes in will find everything in shambles. Things on the floor, tables overturned, dishes broken, and so forth. Whoever did this, they did a thorough job of looking through every nook and cranny in the apartment.

Nathaniel is off at the Observatory, so he can't react to the mess, and whoever did this is long gone by morning. However, other people can come across this mess and try to figure out what the hell happened. Especially if they live in the Apartments, as anyone who lives in there has to walk by the open door to leave the building.]

Well, it's as good a place to search as any. She's not sure what she's looking for but she'll pick her way across the floor to the bedroom.]

Your other options are the kitchen and the bathroom.

[And Nathaniel is a young 20-something, neither of those places are probably appealing right now. Saix is just looking for anything that's out of place, and taking note of how utterly trashed the place is.]

They were certainly thorough, whoever they were...

[She answers from inside the bedroom.]

He might as well take the few belongings that aren't broken and move into a new apartment.

This mattress is hardly fit to sleep on anymore.

[Guess that rules out using it for inappropriate purposes.]

[As always, your priorities are in perfect order, Anya.]

That's likely what he'll have to do if he doesn't want to clear this entire apartment out.

What else can you think of that he might have had which was valuable? [It's asked as he lifts up a flipped over table to see if there's anything underneath.] He's the one in charge of looking over the Bastion, so perhaps tools related to it?

You think someone would go to this much trouble looking for tools? And who would hide them well enough to make someone tear the whole place apart to find them?

[She pokes through the contents of his wardrobe, now strewn across the floor.]

If they even did find what they were looking for.

If they're specific to the Bastion? It's a possibility. It isn't as though we have an inventory of what Nathaniel keeps in his room.

[Any books, Nate? Saix is going through them.]

Although that does raise a good point...

If it's important enough, he might carry it with him.

We're assuming that smart. Speaking from experience, sometimes the academically intelligent ones lack a startlingly large amount of common sense.

He was at least smart enough to do a good job hiding it...

[A thoughtful pause.]

Oh! Is this how people cover their tracks? You know, we can't tell what was taken from where because everything is completely trashed. He could be terrible at hiding things.

[...that's actually a pretty good point.]

That's something we should definitely keep in mind. It's certainly annoying to have to search through all of this.

It is annoying.

[She appears back at the doorway to the bedroom.]

When are they supposed to get back anyway? Can't we just ask him if anything is missing?

It takes them a full day to get there. Presumably if all goes well, they'll be here tomorrow.

[If not, well... They're going to be waiting here a while.]

So we all lock and possibly barricade our doors tonight and we'll manage.

...Or you could simply stay with me if you would prefer. The Berserker keeps watch at the Tower, and anyone who would get to my door would get New Moon's attention. I also have neighbors who would hear if anything happened.

There are indeed a lot of books in the apartment, specifically in the living room. But they have all been thrown off the shelf, and some of them have been ripped, as if someone were looking through them very fast and had been a bit careless. It seems as though every single book in the entire apartment has been rooted out and searched through, though, including the couple that had somehow made it under his bed.

He also had a lot of tools stashed in his apartment, as he had made a little workspace in the dining room area, but everything has been rifled through and lies either on the ground or on the table. Some sort of electronic thing also is on the ground, smashed to pieces.

Whoever did this also tore his mattress apart, but there was nothing inside except springs and filling.

His bathroom HAD been very clean, thank you very much. It is actually the least-destroyed room, as the only mess made was when they pulled he stuff from the medicine cabinet to look through it.]

[Anya may not have been observant enough to notice the condition of the books, she only checked to see if any of them looked like personal diaries.

For now she's rejoining Saix.]

Your place is more spacious. Maybe I'll gather my things.

[Saix is in the process of crouching down to inspect the smashed electronic device, wondering if he can figure out what it is. He's by no means a technological expert so he'll likely have to go see if Colin can identify this when he returns... Still, he is from the World where a scientist was king and has had lots of dealings with technology while working in the Organization. Maybe he can figure out a little bit about it.]

Going to do that now, then? I still want to stay here for a while longer.

Sure. You enjoy yourself. I'll check back once I have everything.

[Because she really does think he likes playing detective at least a little bit.

And she'll be making her way back out to the hallway.]
