[ This is one Trisana Chandler, plump redhead with a bunch of braids all tied in a knot at the back of her head, glaring at the sky from behind her glasses. ]

I've had enough of you. You have absolutely no variation. There's wind here, there has to be some sort of system that can moved in, but nothing is changing!

[ Why yes, there is a reason she's scowling at the sky. In fact, its why there's a chair from the kitchen with a stacked plate of cookies on it. She is trying to lure people over with those, yes she is. ]

Does anyone object to me making a weather system? A couple days of sunny, a couple sort-of cloudy days, maybe a rainy day, then it'd clear up. I'd be using the river, but it shouldn't take much. Or, I guess I could mix that with pulling clouds in every ... twelve hours, or whatever you all them, to give us a light difference for when we go to sleep.

[A few shaky breaths, stepping back again.

A witch.

Crona had hoped there would be no witches here. No witches, no magic, no one to fear.

There is so much outside the Bastion to fear, there doesn't need to be anyone inside it too.]

W-why are you here?

The same reason anyone else ended up here - because a Calamity happened, and I didn't... end up elsewhere. Or whatever it is the other option.

[ The option she isn't thinking about. ]

W-witches always... you always have plans. Always. That's what witches do. They have plans. They hurt people.

[stormsinbraids]

I actively avoid hurting people. I hate getting hurt, and if I do something just a little bit careless, people will get hurt and seek to hurt me. I'm tired of being hurt.

[ She goes silent for a moment. ]

My only plan, back home, was to go to school so I could learn how to heal.

[ Healing didn't get people to make faces like Crona was making at her now. ]

I don't know how it works in your world, but in mine, there are lots of kinds of magic users. Some do that - they hurt people for power, or because they can. Because they were hurt and want to hurt others. I do my best to avoid those kinds.

... that... that doesn't happen, you know? Magic always hurts people.

[stormsinbraids]

Magic can also enhance medicines. Magic helped cure a plague. And a healer can burn sickness out of someone. Magic can grow plants, provide food, keep sickness at bay.

[ Granted, magic also caused that plague. ]

Yes. Some people use magic to enslave others. Pirates, usually.

[ She still has occasional nightmares about what she did with those pirates. ]

There.... there isn't anything like that. Not where I'm from.

It hurts people. Always.

[stormsinbraids]

I don't know where you're from, so I don't know how magic works there.

[ Tris sighs. ]

Look. If it makes you uncomfortable, I'll just.. not do any magic around you. If it doesn't make you too uncomfortable, I can try to show you that my magic works differently. Your choice.

[ And, well, really, Tris has some aspects of her magic that she doesn't turn off, so she might just avoid Crona.

Chime is looking worriedly between the two of them. ]

..... c-can you show me? Something... something that doesn't hurt anything?

[stormsinbraids]

Yes.

[ Tris just has to think on what, exactly. A great deal of the showy applications of her magic are tied to disasters.

... well, there was that trick...

Tris reaches up and picks a braid out. Its a little thick, but not her thickest braid, and it doesn't have a black ribbon on the end. ]

It will get a little windy, so I'm going to step over here.

[ Which she does, mostly so the cookies don't get dust and dirt all over them.

What Tris is doing may be a bit hard to see, as she's working with wind and wind isn't terribly flashy unless it starts spinning rather fast. But after a moment, she's standing - her own clothing not moving very much - off the ground, while the grass under her feet moves in a wind. ]

I used this to get my sister up a cliff after she'd been kidnapped.

W-who kidnapped her?

[Even witches have siblings. Even witches can be concerned about their siblings.]

[stormsinbraids]

A man, who wanted to marry her. So he kidnapped her, trapped her, and left her in a box under guard.

[ It was passed and dealt with. And with Chime on her head, it helped her not produce sparks. The thought of what Fin did still made her irritable, but sparking wouldn't be much help. ]

[blackblooded]

That was stupid.

[stormsinbraids]

Yes. It was. He got himself and his uncle arrested for his trouble; my sister's cousin is the empress, and she was not pleased.

[ Granted, the Empress was the one who wanted her sister to stay in the country, and the easiest way to do that would have been to marry... ]

[blackblooded]

[Crona nods. The initial shock has worn off, and the meister can talk calmly.]

My mother was a witch. She... was a bad person.

[stormsinbraids]

That happens. Bad people with power. My cousin was the only one who was nice to me; he later came and tried to sell my family to pirates.

[ Granted, a small part of that had been him being magically bound. But the other part was he wanted the money. ]

[blackblooded]

I-it's not just bad people with power. Magic turns people bad.

[stormsinbraids]

I think it may make the bad ones worse - if they're mean already, now they have another way to be mean.

[ Tris lowers herself back to the ground, shaking her skirts out once. ]

[blackblooded]

There aren't any good witches. It's the nature of magic to turn users evil.

[stormsinbraids]

I don't think it works that way in my world. The people who do healing use magic - I'm actually up and about because I've been healed recently. I already said medicines can work better with a bit of magic, and my brother's teacher grows plants for people who are in droughts.

I meant... If there was a bully - someone who picks on and beats people for no reason other than they can - they would be worse with magic. But they're bad, without it.

[blackblooded]

[Crona nods.

It's a different world. A different world and Crona doesn't know about magic and maybe, just maybe, the Sway of Magic doesn't control the lives of witches there.

But Crona can't trust a witch, not ever.]

R-ragnarok is like that, you know? A bully.

[Shut up or I'll hurt you!]

[stormsinbraids]

I think I noticed.

[ With a thin smile. Tris is getting the idea that as much as she likes to help those who are hurt, Crona is probably not one she can help out. Simply because she has magic. ]

[blackblooded]

.... how does it work? Your magic. [There was no chanting of names, nothing that looked or felt like magic. Just wind.]

[stormsinbraids]

Well...

[ Tris has to think on that for a little bit. ]

When I was younger, when I didn't know what I had was magic, my mood changed things. If I was sad, clouds would blow in and start rain. If I was angry, things happened from hailstorms indoors to lightning striking the small trees. Now?

Now I know I have magic- I have a core, inside me, that I draw... threads [ small arcs of lightning, really- ] out of, and I touch those to various things. For making clouds, I would touch the river and tell it what I want. Argue a little bit, and it listens. The winds and lightning are generally easier to work with.

Ah.

That's different. Really different.

... there's no math at all? [Wild magic. Magic controlled by moods and impulse and arguments rather than magic that forces energy into carefully controlled mathematical patterns. So strange.]
