[It'll take a few minutes, so the others are free to do what they want until he's done. He's practiced this morph, but it's still strange... and he still doesn't like water.]
no subject
[It like a question when she says it, though, because she's got maybe half a clue what she's doing at best here.]
no subject
By the way, did you bring Grey, Red, both, or neither? The response the party gets depends entirely on that fact.]
no subject
[Because of course Grey was brought along. Why head into a negotiation without a bargaining chip?]
no subject
[As he finishes morphing, he sinks into the water. Sounds are muffled like this, but if he stays still he shouldn't look too suspicious. Anklegators aren't that out of place here, after all.]
no subject
Also, at the meeting point there is not someone immediately visible, but there are at least a dozen people hiding in the area, for people who can sense that kind of thing. Once everyone arrives, a young-sounding voice speaks out.]
I told you to bring them here! Them. As in, both of them.
no subject
No, he's going to slip into his best reasonable (and relatively harmless) healer persona and answer the speaker.]
It was decided that, in light of our last encounter and current tensions, it would be best to hold onto Red until we are able to negotiate peacefully. We have all felt the pain of loss, and I'm sure we all want nothing more than to avoid attending any more funerals.
[He takes a breath for effect, allowing the words to be processed.]
I am Ghaleon, last of the Magic Race and current healer residing in the Bastion. To whom are we speaking?
no subject
And I'm—I'm Aoi Asahina. [Introductions are good, right? She'll just follow Ghaleon's lead.] Um, Super High School Level Swimmer, and...resident of the Bastion.
no subject
[He's near enough that he could rush up and defend the others quickly, but he's still a small distance away. If his idea is right, at least his presence should deter any other predators in the area.]
no subject
The voice from before speaks up again.]
You can call me Orange.
[Grey's head shoots up suddenly when he hears that name. Is it surprise? Worry? WHO KNOWS!
But Orange is speaking again, and she sounds agitated.]
There will be no negotiations. We wanted Red and Grey back, nothing less. If you can't give them back, then we will carry out our threats.
no subject
We have every intention of returning both unharmed, whatever conclusions you might have reached about us. All we ask in return is an explanation of why you believe that the only thing we will listen to is force, and why it is that your people apparently believe that condemning an entire settlement to burn for the sake of retrieving two people is a just course of action.
I mean, clearly you must believe yourselves the heroes, or you wouldn't consider it right to execute even one person in one of the most painful manners possible, much less a sizable portion of the remaining people left alive. After all, if you get your little project running, you can just revive them, can't you, Orange?
[...Yeah, he might be a little angry.]
no subject
<We can get through this. They probably came prepared for dragon, so if they attack they won't be expecting something like me. Just stand your ground and don't let them intimidate you.>
[More privately, he just addresses Aoi with his next bit.]
<This kind of thing can be scary, but we'll keep you safe, okay? So don't worry.>
no subject
[Finally, the source of the voice steps out from between the trees, and it is a girl who can't be older than 14 at most. She looks a bit thin, like she hasn't been eating well, but determination burns in her eyes.]
You have no right keeping her, so you will return her to me. NOW.
[Hint time! Guessing why Red might be so important to Orange will help in negotiations.]
no subject
[She notices the anger and feels tensions escalating, and barely even has time to think about Tobias's reassurance before Orange steps forward. She's so young and small and Aoi walks another few steps ahead, palms out.]
We want her to come back home to you, and she will. But—but we want everyone to be okay. No one at the camp's done anything to deserve this and we—all of us, we just want to be okay. Staying alive out here is hard enough without everybody who's left fighting, too! We'll all be better off if we can just work together! Or—or at least just talk things over!

...I swear upon the graves of everyone I have ever cared for that she will be returned to you. My desire is to talk, not to rob a girl of her mother.
[He gives Grey a gentle nudge towards Orange, directing his next words to him.]
Go. I'm sure she would rather hear how Red is doing from a familiar face. I certainly would have in her position.
no subject
no subject
Fine! Bring her here within the next two days, and we will not attack.
[That's a compromise, right?]
no subject
Of course. Now, if you would just tell us why exactly your people believe us so deplorable that you seem to believe the deaths of two of our own at your hands were deserved, we can be on our way.
Oh, and for that matter, my dears, would you mind telling us what worlds your groups came from? It's not as imperative as the first question, but it would be nice to know if others of our worlds survived.
[His tone is back to almost pleasant, even conversational. Any trace of the previous anger has been carefully stowed away for the moment to be dealt with later.]
no subject
It's all your fault! The guy in charge, he told us it was all your fault!
[At this point Grey starts trying to shush Orange, but she keeps talking.]
He said you're sitting on technology that can save all of us, and you're not sharing! Do you even know how many of us have died from monsters, from eating bad food, or even from falling off the Skyway?
Someday, you're all going to regret being so selfish.
no subject
[He doesn't share it with everyone else, just with Aoi and Ghaleon, but it's... enough.]
<But keep a close eye on them... if you can get Orange to talk more without other people shutting her up, we might get more information.>
no subject
no subject
[Ghaleon looks openly troubled by this information. He's not sure if Tobias can hear him like this, but the boy is getting mentally thanked anyway.]
Aoi is correct. As far as I've observed, the Bastion is extraordinarily accepting of all manner of people. I can't account for anyone from before the time I arrived, but to actively refuse people at least some assistance seems... terribly out of character, even accounting for those that have either died or are MIA and most likely dead. Perhaps it's just an unfortunate misunderstanding?
[He's not calling this so-called leader a liar, oh no. Not even going to imply it to everyone's faces right now. He might suspect it, but he certainly won't say it.]
Did your leader say when it was we seemed to reject any calls for help?
no subject
[Is that doubt in her eyes? Maybe.]
He said you were all greedy, that you wouldn't let a large group of outsiders come in. He said that you had rejected another group before, and that you were afraid of being outvoted when it came to serious stuff.
no subject
<That's wrong. We all know it is. We did offer to take them in, and some of them took us up on it... I have to wonder who this leader is... or if it's someone inside our own camp.>
