[She notices the anger and feels tensions escalating, and barely even has time to think about Tobias's reassurance before Orange steps forward. She's so young and small and Aoi walks another few steps ahead, palms out.]
We want her to come back home to you, and she will. But—but we want everyone to be okay. No one at the camp's done anything to deserve this and we—all of us, we just want to be okay. Staying alive out here is hard enough without everybody who's left fighting, too! We'll all be better off if we can just work together! Or—or at least just talk things over!

...I swear upon the graves of everyone I have ever cared for that she will be returned to you. My desire is to talk, not to rob a girl of her mother.
[He gives Grey a gentle nudge towards Orange, directing his next words to him.]
Go. I'm sure she would rather hear how Red is doing from a familiar face. I certainly would have in her position.

Fine! Bring her here within the next two days, and we will not attack.
[That's a compromise, right?]

Of course. Now, if you would just tell us why exactly your people believe us so deplorable that you seem to believe the deaths of two of our own at your hands were deserved, we can be on our way.
Oh, and for that matter, my dears, would you mind telling us what worlds your groups came from? It's not as imperative as the first question, but it would be nice to know if others of our worlds survived.
[His tone is back to almost pleasant, even conversational. Any trace of the previous anger has been carefully stowed away for the moment to be dealt with later.]

It's all your fault! The guy in charge, he told us it was all your fault!
[At this point Grey starts trying to shush Orange, but she keeps talking.]
He said you're sitting on technology that can save all of us, and you're not sharing! Do you even know how many of us have died from monsters, from eating bad food, or even from falling off the Skyway?
Someday, you're all going to regret being so selfish.

[He doesn't share it with everyone else, just with Aoi and Ghaleon, but it's... enough.]
<But keep a close eye on them... if you can get Orange to talk more without other people shutting her up, we might get more information.>

[Ghaleon looks openly troubled by this information. He's not sure if Tobias can hear him like this, but the boy is getting mentally thanked anyway.]
Aoi is correct. As far as I've observed, the Bastion is extraordinarily accepting of all manner of people. I can't account for anyone from before the time I arrived, but to actively refuse people at least some assistance seems... terribly out of character, even accounting for those that have either died or are MIA and most likely dead. Perhaps it's just an unfortunate misunderstanding?
[He's not calling this so-called leader a liar, oh no. Not even going to imply it to everyone's faces right now. He might suspect it, but he certainly won't say it.]
Did your leader say when it was we seemed to reject any calls for help?
no subject
[Is that doubt in her eyes? Maybe.]
He said you were all greedy, that you wouldn't let a large group of outsiders come in. He said that you had rejected another group before, and that you were afraid of being outvoted when it came to serious stuff.
no subject
<That's wrong. We all know it is. We did offer to take them in, and some of them took us up on it... I have to wonder who this leader is... or if it's someone inside our own camp.>
no subject
...Troubling as the thought is, it will need to be dealt with later.]
Hm. If it's the same group I'm thinking of, I'm not sure how he arrived at that conclusion. They were offered their own homes in the Bastion, and some of them even decided to take it.
If you don't mind my asking, your leader does have others check if his information is correct before making his decisions, I hope?
no subject
[She sounds VERY doubtful now, though. Could he be lying? He had said that the Bastion residents refused others, but now people are saying otherwise, and she doesn't know what to think.]
no subject
This, my dear, is why I ask if he has others to check his conclusions against. A leader who sincerely believes that what they do is right who is operating on incorrect assumptions can be just as damaging as one who intentionally misleads others for their own gain.
[Life lessons from one who knows the hero/villain thing from both sides.]
