[For the most part, the NPCs let the characters do whatever they like while they're in the Bastion. Since most of the NPCs can't go out on the Skyway, they're kind of relying on the PCs to get them supplies and such. Because of that, they tend to notice who goes out on the Skyway and who doesn't.

That's why one of them, a teenage girl by the name of Esther, decides to approach Kaoru eventually.]

[he blinks at the girl coming towards him, checks she's not after anyone else - she can't be, it's just him around here - and laughs a little self-consciously]

Well, I don't have plans to be anywhere else...

[bastionpc]

Oh good.

[She'll go ahead and stand near Kaoru to talk to him, then.]

I was just thinking, I don't see you going out with the others when they go to the Skyway. Do you know how to fight?

[individuates]

Ah. [for some reason he feels like he's been busted, even though he can't help his circumstances] You see... I'm still learning. I'm taking lessons but I've only been swinging a sword around for about ten days [and his arms still hurt a bit] and I worry that I'd get under people's feet if I go out there all the time so... I try to keep out of the way, but I want to help where I can. So I'm studying hard!

[bastionpc]

Aaaah, I get it now.

[She's not criticizing him for it, though. Everyone has to start somewhere.]

Well, if you're the learning type, want to study something else while everyone's out exploring? That way you'll get a chance to work your mind while your body rests from training.

[individuates]

Eh...? [blinks at her a bit] But... what would I study? I kind of thought that combat skills were the only thing of use in this place...

[bastionpc]

Well, none of you guys are actually from around here. None of you can read Caelondian, or else you wouldn't be running to Nate every time you found some papers.

But since you're here, I thought I could teach you how to read our language.

[individuates]

[tilts his head slightly to one side. You certainly have his interest...]

...is it difficult? I mean, I don't imagine it would be like any other language I've come across before...

[bastionpc]

Well, it's based off of sounds. It's got thirty letters, and the letters are put together to make the words.

[So basically like any language that uses the Latin alphabet, but with a few extra letters.]

But it's easy once you learn the letters, everything is spelled like how it sounds.

[individuates]

[nodding slowly] Okay, I might be able to handle that. Kind of like Spanish? That won't be so hard... right?

[bastionpc]

[Kaoru she is not from your world how is she going to know what Spanish is?]

It's simple enough that most kids learn it by the time they're ten. I think Sammy's the only one here from my world who can't read, and Anna learned it as a second language and she's not even a teenager yet.

[individuates]

I guess it's worth a try then! I'll give it my best! Where do we start?

[bastionpc]

By learning the letters, of course.

[Paper is kind of hard to come by, but she did manage to get a child's ABC book.]

This one has pictures of animals with names that start with each letter.

[...except some of them are animals that don't exist on Earth. Oops.]

[individuates]

[Tell Kaoru about it! As a designer it is possibly the worst thing in the world, not being able to sketch to his heart's content when the inspiration strikes]

[he laughs a bit at the baby book] I see, I see.

...you know, I don't know what half these things are. I don't think we even have them in my world, never mind have words for them...

[bastionpc]

Whaaaat? You guys seriously don't have Lunkheads in your world?

[individuates]

...nothing even close! Why do you call it a Lunk Head? [tilting his head to the side a bit] ...is Lunk even a word?

[bastionpc]

Because it jumps on people's heads! And Lunk is totally a word, it's the sound it makes when it jumps on your head.

[individuates]

[flicking through the book, looking at pictures] But surely Lunkhead should describe the creature, not what it does to you...

...do many creatures here hatch from eggs?

[bastionpc]

Some do. Mostly birds, reptiles, the monsters, that kind of thing. Why?

[individuates]

You see, monsters is what I`m worried about. I somehow ended up taking care of an egg - well, it`s at home right now - and I have no way of knowing what`s inside, and when it will hatch. It would help a bit to know that stuff, I guess... I just have no idea who to ask about it.

[bastionpc]

It depends on how big it is and what color the egg is and where it was laid, really. Where did you find it?

[individuates]

When the farm appeared outside, I found it in with the chickens in the coop. [gesturing with his hands] it`s about this big. Black and purple. I kind of get that it`s not normal, even for this place. But Seimei says there`s definitely something inside...

[bastionpc]

Oh! If you found it in a chicken coop, it might be a foxire egg!

[Esther looks a lot more excited now.]

Oh my gosh, I hope it's a foxire! They're so cute!

[individuates]

...is that good? I mean, Seimei says it should be fine if I raise it right, but I have no idea what to expect other than a bird or a lizard...

[bastionpc]

Yeah, they're good.

[She flips the pages of the kid book over to one with a fox-looking creature on it. The notable difference, besides the fact that it's black and purple instead of red and white, is that it has two tails instead of one.]

They make awesome companion animals, as long as you treat them right. Even though they can't talk, they're really smart.

Oh, but don't get your hopes up. Even though it's likely a Foxire egg, it might be something else. Squirt eggs are pretty big too, so it could be one of those. And then there's all kinds of other monsters, like Peckers and Anklegators and such.

[individuates]

[nods] I don`t really mind what I get so long as it doesn`t kill me. I wish there was a way to know for sure, though. I`d at least know what to prepare and what to feed it...

[bastionpc]

Well if it ends up being a Foxire, you'll have to get lots of meat for it. Squirts eat plants, but as it gets older and turns into a Gasfella it would need meat in its diet. I don't know about other things but I'm sure there's ways to find out.

[individuates]

So if it`s something else I just... put some meat in front of it and see what happens?

I suppose how long it will take to hatch depends on the creature inside, right? Though there`s no way of telling how long has passed between the time it was laid and when I found it...

[bastionpc]

Pretty much. But when the egg starts to move a bit, it'll probably hatch in the next day or so.
