[Day 209] it's morphin' time!;

Who: Tobias and anyone who wants to play with a dolphin.

What: It's been stressful lately. It's time to be silly.

[Maybe it was due to the stress of dealing with the whole cure thing and the having to go find Ura and get back to the Bastion. Maybe he was just tired of thinking of how much he missed Rachel and the others. Or maybe he was just done with the weird animals here.]

[Whatever the reason, Tobias did something he didn't normally do - he morphed dolphin, splashing around in the lake in Dragonfield and nosing at rocks and basically making a bunch of noise. It is entirely possible for him to be seen flailing around, or occasionally in hawk morph resting. Is he going to use all of his morphs today on dolphin time? Yes. Yes he is.]

[Marco... he kind of misses your sarcasm.]

<And no, talking dolphins isn't usually a thing. I aws born human, got stuck as a hawk, and got given back my morphing ability.>

[His face regains its normal functioning. This suddenly makes a lot more sense. Sort of.]

So you're a shapeshifter, eh? That's pretty cool. Interesting, at least. Can you, uh, turn into anything? Or just animals?

Sounds like that could be pretty fun, so long as there aren't any predators around for what you turn into. Just, uh, just don't turn into me without asking first, okay?

[Rob frowns slightly and shifts from a crouch to sitting on the ground as his legs starts to get stiff. His first thought is that Tobias is some kind of super-spy, but when he thinks about it deeper he realizes that doesn't make sense; a spy with the ultimate disguise wouldn't have rules against using it freely.]

You don't just use this ability to have fun then? What kind of enemies are you talking about?

<Well, we do, but it's not all that often. Most of the others have school and home to think of. But... aliens. Evil alien slugs that crawl inside your head and take over your body.>

[Rob blinks.]

Like in Wrath of Khan?

[... It takes him a moment to remember what the reference is. Ax wasn't entirely fond of watching Star Trek given how many issues he had with the realism.]

<Sort of? Except it's basically impossible to tell who's been infected and who hasn't.>

Wow. That's... that's kinda scary. [Understatement.] How do you fight something like that? How do you even find out about something like that?

<Yeah that's the problem. They have to leave the host body to feed every three days, and we know where they feed... so if you can keep watch over someone for that long and they don't head anywhere suspicious then they're probably not a Controller.>

[He ducks back into the water for a few moments to keep his skin from drying out.]

<We were told about it by... well. An alien who crashed-landed in our town. He's the one who gave us the ability to morph.>

[Rob would normally say that this story seems highly unlikely. Normally. Normally he's not talking to a psychic dolphin either, so he's a little more open to this kind of thing right now.]

Was he hunting the alien slugs or something? That seems like the only reason he'd give people a power like that.

<Pretty much. His race has been trying to stop them and they were fighting above Earth. He got shot down and... yeah.>

[Even given the fact that the Ellimist likely pushed things to end up like that it was still pretty lucky they were there and didn't get hit.]

[Rob might not be the best at reading people, but he can sometimes pick up on things. And from the way Tobias is talking he has a good guess what the answer to his next question will be.]

He didn't make it, did he?

<No. He didn't.>

[If he had, things might be going differently... but he has a feeling that Elfangor knew he was going to die in that battle and went anyway.]

[He almost asks what happened, but manages to catch himself in time. He isn't sure what to say now though.]

I'm sorry.

[It's his best guess at what would be appropriate for the situation.]

<... It's not your fault. All we can do is keep fighting.>

[It's been over two years. And he's still not sure what to make of the memories he received from him in that instant that he couldn't access until... the time he doesn't like to think about.]

...How's it been going so far?

<Well, we haven't been taken over or killed so I'd say that's a success. And we've managed to stall the Yeerks somewhat.>

Stalling's not bad. How many of you are there? It doesn't sound like a situation that'd be easy to convince people of.

<Six. We're all... teenagers or the equivalent. And trying to convince people would either get us laughed at or just be begging for a nearby Yeerk to turn in the information. Or both.>

Six. [Rob's jaw nearly drops.] Six teenagers against an alien army. And you've managed to stall them.

[He turns his crouching into sitting with a soft thump and looks at Tobias with a tiny bit of awe on his face.]

Kid, I'm not sure if a squad of Navy SEALS could've done as good in your situation.

<Well, I can turn into a seel...>

[How does he take a compliment sldfjsd.]

[There's a moment of silence, then Rob snorts, then he's laughing. It takes a bit before he can say anything.]

The mental image of a bunch of seels fighting aliens...

[That's all he can get out before he's laughing too much to speak.]

<Baby seals. It was the Arctic, we were cold, seals are warm.>

[Dolphins are warm too, but not for those kinds of temperatures.]
