Day 155
Who: Zulf and you
Open: Open
When: Day 155
Where: The training hall
What: Zulf tries to remember an old street thief skill from his childhood, along with some weapon practice.
Format: Any
Warnings: Nothing comes to mind
As he had said plenty of times before, Zulf is not a fighter. Certainly he knows enough survival skills to last out on the Skyway for some time- he's managed before after all. However, that's more in evading and hiding. When it comes to actual weaponry... Well, he's not exactly combat ready. He can avoid shooting or cutting himself and that's it. That won't do much good if he plans to keep on going out onto the Skyway like this- with Colin's Observatory expedition and his plans with Zayna.
If you pass by the training hall today, depending on the time of day, you'll find Zulf training on one of tw things. For the occasion, he's dressed down with just a simple button up shirt with the sleeves rolled up and a plain lavender skirt.
In the morning, he seems to be doing what looks like evasion practice. There seems to be something he's aiming for although it's hard to tell what. The movements are sharp and almost jerky before Zulf takes a step back with a frown and a shake of his head. This goes on for a couple of hours... But if your character is nearby, they might hear a triumphant shout. In the training hall, there might for some reason be some faint gray... dust? Hanging in the air.
Come afternoon, and it's weapons training. Or, rather, Zulf has both a Fanged Repeater and a War Machete and he's doing a lot of awkward staring at both. It's the look of a man who isn't entirely comfortable with guns or large sharp blades. Still, he'll at least... give the Fanged Repeater a shot. Anyone watching him while he's doing target practice can probably tell right away that he's very slow to get his aim just right. The machete?
...Despite a certain kid's compliments, Zulf just keeps staring at it. No seriously how.

[Came a voice from behind Zulf as none other than Raile stepped into the Training Hall. He had heard the sounds of someone working inside the building and with nothing much to do with his arm in a sling, he had decided to take a look. He wouldn't be able to give as good of lessons as he'd like sans an arm, but he was sure he'd be able to give Zulf a tip or two on how to use these particular weapons.]
no subject
I wouldn't oppose it- but first, how's your arm doing?
no subject
[He said as he walked over and picked the War Machete up in his good hand. It was a good thing he was mildly ambidextrous and the Machete was something he could use with one hand.]
Still, i can give y'a few pointers here and there without hurtin' m'self.
no subject
If you're certain. I won't deny I need them.
no subject
Show me what y'do know about usin' one of these first, then I'll know what t'tell you.
no subject
[That's only a little hesitance when he takes the machete back from Raile. At the very least, it's apparent he knows how to get a good grip on the blade- someone's gone over that sort of thing with him before apparently. He makes his way over to one of the practice dummies that have been set up. There's one last awkward glance back towards Raile before Zulf takes a breath.]
[He takes a dart forward to slash at the dummy, only to pull back right again- he's not confident he'll ever hold in an upfront fight and he won't pretend he is. His swings aren't as powerful as they could be, and it doesn't help that he isn't doing it properly even though his grip is good enough. They're the movements of someone who's more used to hitting and running for the hills than anything.]
no subject
[Well, that wasn't a bad start, but Zulf obviously needed some work. Raile stepped forward and stood at Zulf's side, using his good arm to start sliding Zulf's various body parts into a more proper stance...it totally wasn't awkward at all, not even a little, right? By the end of it, Zulf was standing in a more defensive pose with his dominant half poised towards the back, while his less dominant half was set closest to the dummy for defense with that arm raised in front of him with his palm outstretched.]
There we go, that's more like it. Now when y'swing t'Machete, the power it gonna come from here...
[He said as he gave the side of Zulf's hip a few pats.]
And here.
[He finished, patting Zulf on his dominant shoulder.]
Keep tension in your upper arm, but keep yer forearm an' elbow loose, y'need t'snap yer wrist when y'swing, so y'can't have it rigid. Now when y'swing, swivel yer hip int'tha swing, raise yer arm up, and then let it fall int'tha motion of yer hip; when y'feel yer elbow straighten fully, then ye snap yer wrist int'tha swing and put yer whole chest int'it. I want y't'imagine that when y'hit that dummy that yer blade's gonna go straight through it, that'll help yer follow through, and then bring yer blade back up at an angle as y'swivel yer hip back t'this neutral stance.
[Raile took a step back to let his instructions sink in, confident that they were good enough for Zulf to follow. Maybe he might ask for a simplified version, but he'd handle that if it came.]
no subject
[Wait- oh hi there Raile you sure are invading his personal space, the bubble is apparently not a thing with you. Zulf... isn't as surprised as he thinks he should be??? Then again... When it comes down to it, he realizes he lets Raile get away with a great many things that he wouldn't care for if it were any other person. So he stays quiet and lets himself be moved around as Raile pleases. There's a slight twitch both times when he's patted, but he's obviously taking care to listen]
[When the explanation is finally finished, Zulf furrows his brow a little bit as he goes over it in his mind. Going slow for now, he tries to do the actions Raile just described and shifts a little when he thinks it's doing it wrong.]
Snap the wrist... [It's muttered under his breath to himself a bit as he rolls said wrist a bit.]
no subject
[Raile took a step back and let Zulf work on his own from here; he could see by his movements that he understood what he'd been taught, he just needed to get his body into the motions enough to feel comfortable with everything.]
Just remember, y'gotta commit to yer swing and trust in yer blade; if y'pull back too soon, y'll break the flow and it'll take the bite right outta t'blade.
no subject
[He gives a slightly faster swing, only to frown a little bit. It's the snap of the wrist part that's getting him, for some reason, but he's determined to figure it out.]
no subject
no subject
[It's a statement, not an inquiry. He's already quite aware that there's no way Raile couldn't have.... Considering it's Zulf's fault that he had to in the first place.]
no subject
[The memories made him...uncomfortable at best. He hadn't wanted to...and the fact that he'd had to spill Ura blood was something he regretted; they were fighting to survive just as he was, perhaps that was why he'd chosen to go back, to undo all the death and injury he'd caused...though a fat lot of good that did.]
Maybe this time we can work with 'em instead of against 'em. I'd rather us all survive together, y'know?
no subject
[Zulf stops practicing and straightens up as he turns to face Raile.]
I've actually already spoken about that idea with Zayna and she's agreed to help escort me to the Terminals after we find the next Core, whenever that may be.
no subject
That so? Would y'be opposed t'me providin' some armed escort?
[Not that he thought Zulf and Zanya couldn't handle themselves, of course, Zulf knew it wasn't about that. He just wanted to make sure they got there as safe as humanly possible...it was a question posed out of caring if nothing else.]
no subject
If you come with us halfway, I won't have any objections. But beyond that... I think it would be best if you don't go. The Terminals were already weary of Caelondia before this all happened. During a disaster on this level, I don't think they'll be excited to see you to put it lightly. It might make convincing them a little harder. If it's just myself and Zayna, too Tazal-born Ura, they'll be more willing to listen.
It's nothing personal- I just don't want them to shut themselves off from discussion right away. This is a delicate situation.
no subject
[He reached a hand up and gave Zulf a few pats on the shoulder; again, he trusted him completely, but out on the Skyway, it took more than trust to survive. He'd have to make sure that Zulf was at the very least prepared for the journey if nothing else.]
no subject
The way there is difficult, but we know where we're going so it hopefully won't be a long journey at all. We'll be prepared. [His own hand goes to squeeze Raile's shoulder in return.]
Listen... When we make it there and all goes well, I'll try and send a messenger back to let you all know that I'm alright. With the journey itself on both ends... It shouldn't take much more than a week.
no subject
[Micia help anything out on that Skyway that might get the stupid idea of trying to hurt or keep Zulf from getting where he needed to go. If they wanted a faster route to the Lorn Mother's arms...well then they'd find it on the end of his hammer. Speaking of...]
Though now that I'm thinkin' of it...I do got somethin' for you. I ain't done yet, but I'd like y't'see how it's comin' along.
no subject
[And he knows that if anything goes wrong, Raile will come for him without even a question. It's a more reassuring thought than he figured it would be.]
[At the mention of something for him, however, Zulf's eyebrows raise.]
For me? Well- alright then.
no subject
Like I said...ain't done yet, but I'm makin' a chest plate y'can wear under yer shirt. I wasn't doin' much with my old hammer head, so I decided t'pass on t'luck it's given me t' you.
[And if Zulf looked closely, he'd see the faint etchings of a gear half pounded into the metal near where his heart would be. He'd understand what that meant.]
It ain't much...but it'll keep y'safe.
no subject
[Oh.]
[For a short minute, he can't say anything. His throat is a little closed up, and Zulf has to clear it.]
It's... Thank you. Preemptively, thank you very much.
[Yeah. He understands what that gear there means quite well.]
no subject
[He said as he held the sheet of metal out to Zulf; he'd come to figure out that what he considered light wasn't always as light as he thought, so it was best to get an answer from the person who'd be wearing it.]
no subject
[He snaps out of it, reaching out to take it from Raile. The weight of it helps bring him back to earth a bit. He shifts it a bit in his hands, thinking.]
It might be a bit heavy, especially since I'm not used to armor... I'm not sure how heavy would work with yuzal either..
[That sure is an Ura word.]
no subject
[That sure was a word Raile'd never heard before. Come on Zulf, he never finished school, go easy on the poor boy.]
