[ Zelda had finally left the hospital a couple days ago and taken her scant belongings to one of the empty apartment rooms instead. Rather than lay abed for the entire day, Zelda was forcing herself to develop some sort of daily routine. It began when the cloudiness of "nighttime" subsided, at which time Zelda went to the memorial to pray. ]

[ There were no relics related to Hyrulean religion for Zelda to pray to, but she prayed anyway, kneeling solemnly. After her prayers, she sat on a wooden bench and began to write in a blank diary she had picked up at the Lost and Found. Anyone who sees her writing will be unable to read such a strange language. ]

[ Please interrupt her, whether during prayer or while she writes. ]

Right now? No... I mean Nathaniel kinda defaults as leader 'cause he was the apprentice to one of the Mancers that knew all about this stuff before he died. Really... we're most organized when we go lookin' for the Cores to give more power to this place.

[ It strikes her as odd that a village, even one this small, operates without any governing body. How do all these people from different worlds with different cultures cooperate in such a way that they all mutually benefit and no one feels slighted? That definitely merits examination. ]

I am aware of the Cores, but who are these 'Mancers?'

[Rin couldn't tell Zelda how it worked, just that for the time being it seemed to be doing so. How well was open to interpretation depending on who you ask, but if Rin were asked why she thought it was going so well she would have to wager a simple "survival" answer.

It was needed. If they fell apart now, everyone would die.]

Uhm... lemmie see if I can remember this...

So before this all happened, in Caelondia, there were different jobs that people had. Kinda like... uhm... what's it... ... guilds? I think that's the right word. But Mancers were sorta at the top of everythin' cause they weren't just scientists they were inventors that made things for everyone in Caelondia to use.

[ A social hierarchy which favors intellect over war-making? Or perhaps it favored intellect for the sake of war-making. The latter seemed the most plausible to Zelda, with knowing that the Calamity was man-made. ]

I see. So it was their power which ran unchecked and led to the Calamity, correct?

[In favor of, but Rin doesn't know that exactly. There have been more and more hints towards it, though. Especially with the things Nathaniel has been saying...]

I guess so. We found a journal recently, but I'unno what all's in it yet. If we can get a translation on it, it'll probably give more clues to what happened.

[She shifts a little, looking at her hands.]

For a long time people in my world thought we were gonna go out that way - destroyin' ourselves. War, disease, weapons... it was a huge problem in Assiah. Especially with all the different governments not agreein' with one another on anythin'. I never understood what it was all about, though.

[ Zelda frowns. She has studied politics extensively, although the governmental forms present in Rin's world would be mostly unfamiliar to her. ]

Sometimes, the arguments between governments are no less petty than arguments between small children. Greed motivates kingdoms to monopolize resources, to lie to each other and spy, to go to war over misunderstandings or cultural differences. Rarely are wars fought with noble intentions, no matter how a king claims they are. I expect that the motivations behind the Calamity run along these lines.

[Maybe not centuries ago, but what people call "democracy" tends to be a little over the heads of those not from her world.]

Seems that way...

[It's... actually over Rin's head, too, but for different reasons. Still, what Zelda said did actually make some sense to her.]

... should we have a government here?

That, I cannot say. I know very little of this place and its workings. [ She can speculate, though. I'm sorry, Rin. ]

Supposing the residents of the Bastion are truly as honest and cooperative as they appear, a governing body may not be necessary. Resources appear relatively abundant and residents are startlingly accepting of the increasingly heterogeneous culture prevalent here.

... yeah, I don't really know any of that either.

[of course that's more out of ignorance than simply not being aware of it]

A lot of us lost... just about everything. Maybe working' together is all we really have to hold on to now?

[forhyrule]

Perhaps. [ She's willing to concede that point. ] Perhaps those who would covet were not spared from the Calamity. [ But that would sort of imply that the Calamity preserved and destroyed based on a standard of worthiness, and Zelda suspected it was most likely indiscriminate. ]

[ In Zelda's experience, peace is maintained with more than just hard work. ] I hope that I will find a way to contribute alongside everyone else.

[The comment just earns a confused blink from Rin. She vaguely recalled that coveting was technically one of the sins, but she couldn't understand why that would make any difference considering nothing else followed the Bible and Catholic beliefs here. Especially with all the gods and whatnot.

But Zelda changed the subject quickly, and pulled Rin's attention in that direction instead.]
