--

[ Zelda had finally left the hospital a couple days ago and taken her scant belongings to one of the empty apartment rooms instead. Rather than lay abed for the entire day, Zelda was forcing herself to develop some sort of daily routine. It began when the cloudiness of "nighttime" subsided, at which time Zelda went to the memorial to pray. ]

[ There were no relics related to Hyrulean religion for Zelda to pray to, but she prayed anyway, kneeling solemnly. After her prayers, she sat on a wooden bench and began to write in a blank diary she had picked up at the Lost and Found. Anyone who sees her writing will be unable to read such a strange language. ]

[ Please interrupt her, whether during prayer or while she writes. ]

[ Throughout his entire life, Gohan had met all sorts of interesting people. He'd met talking animals that could shapeshift, magical green aliens who looked over the world, off-world tyrants who could be completely psychotic, and even a wish-granting dragon summoned from a set of marbles. At one point, he knew the prince of an alien race, a martial artist with three eyes, and a talking cat that grew magical beans.

A couple of odd tattoos weren't going to phase Gohan in the slightest. ]

... I don't have one. [ The statement sounded more like a revelation than anything else, but Gohan couldn't muster up the energy to be properly surprised. ] Even before this whole... Calamity happened, I don't think I ever really had a home since the androids...

[ A moment of silence as he thought about it further, eyes becoming that much more fixated on the campfire flames. ]

... Or much of a life.

[ Gohan didn't want to use the terms 'war' or 'soldier' in regards to this. They didn't quite fit with what the androids did to his world. Wars were fought through politics, manipulation, followers, all sorts of different ways. But the fight against the androids... that was simply a one-sided slaughter.

Sometimes, he wondered how he wasn't dead. Other times, he remembered that he should've been. That fact has hung over his head since his arrival here, and even know, he... simply didn't know what to do with himself. ]

... I wasn't supposed to be.

[ The words slipped out before he caught them, but he wasn't very concerned with backtracking. Instead, he simply let the words flow, more than he'd ever done in this place. ] I was supposed to be a scholar-- at least, that's what my mother wanted be to be. Of course, my father was a martial artist, so the first thing mom did was prohibit dad from teaching me any fighting.

[ He chuckled at that, although it was once again a mirthless chuckle. ] Look how that turned out.

[ Gohan wasn't a hero, he wanted to say. A hero would've been able to give the people safety, give people hope. A hero would've found a way to deal with the crisis at hand, and put a stop to it. A hero wouldn't have fought a losing battle for thirteen years, and watched everything around them crumble. A hero wouldn't have been powerless to put a stop to the chaos, and simply let it happen. A hero wouldn't have failed.

No, his father was a hero. At the end of the day, Gohan was simply trying to wear a pair of shoes that he just didn't fit into.

... However, rather than decry her, he bit his tongue. The last thing he wanted was to potentially upset someone he just met. Looking up from the fire, he managed to catch her looking down at her gloves. And it wasn't until then that he began to truly take notice of how oddly geometric her tattoos were. ]

... What happened?

[ Gohan wasn't sure what he'd been expecting to hear. He figured it was going to be a story about the hero falling in battle against overwhelming odds, or something like that. He didn't think that she was going to mention something happening on the Skyway, given they were talking about their homes. But something else about her statement jumped out at him. Something that made his skin run cold at the thought. ]

... Ash statues...?

[ He genuinely wanted to know what the statues were supposed to be, but he had a sneaking suspicion that he hoped against all hope was wrong. Given the context, it wasn't hard to guess though. And it only made him dread the answer that much more. ]

... Did... I mean, people who... [ People who die. ] ... There are... ash statues...?

[ He expected it, but at the same time, he wished he hadn't heard it. Not because he didn't want to know, but because it caused his heart to ache. He was already struggling with having survived the androids, given he was supposed to be completely dead. But what if he found statues he was familiar with out there? What if he found his mother? His grandfather? What if he found Bulma? Or... Trunks?

How was he supposed to deal with that? ]

... I see. [ He didn't know what to say, he really didn't. All he knew was that the potential of finding a familiar statue out there left him with a cold sweat. ] ... Thank you for telling me, miss...

[ Gohan already knew anything familiar to him had already crumbled. If it wasn't the Calamity, it had been the androids. That wasn't a feeling that he was unfamiliar with. But all the same, he didn't want the confirmation that everything he had left was dead. He needed some sort of hope, something to look forward to. And in all honesty, he was already having a hard time finding it. ]

... Gohan. [ He answered, idly scratching the back of his neck. ] Just Gohan.

It's nice to meet you, Ze-- uh... princess, I mean.

... Zelda then. [ Gohan said with a smile, if only to get used to saying her name. Although he couldn't help but glance down afterward, taking the skewer that he'd eaten his meat with, and poking at the fire a bit. ]

Listen, um... I'm... sorry if I made you uncomfortable with my rambling. [ He paused, trying to collect his thoughts. ] I haven't really had the chance to just... talk these things out, and it just sort of started spilling out after a certain point. Not that I regret talking about this, I just...

[ He was used to dealing with things alone, was what he wanted to say. ]

... A-Anyway, thank you. I know we just met, but thank you.

[ Gohan didn't look up at her as she said that. Instead, he continued to poke at the fire and watching the embers float upward. He heard her clearly though, something he made obvious as he smiled softly. But it was nowhere near a full smile, despite how much he wanted to muster up the energy to at least reassure her.

He didn't have to face this alone. He knew he didn't have to face this alone. He'd always been able to face anything with the help of his friends. So then, was that why he was so weak now? Because he had no friends? Because he lost everything and was left with nothing?

... Gohan wasn't sure.

But maybe, just maybe... that meant there was nothing to lose by letting someone in. ]

I'm glad you think that...
