[the egg had been getting more and more fidgety over the past few days, to the extent that it was waking Kaoru in the night with its rocking. He had tried setting it to one side, or putting it in the other room, but was so used to sleeping with Tama-chan in his arms or by his pillow that it felt strange without her. So he had resigned himself to her fussiness and was just... trying to sleep around it.

A crack had appeared in the egg's shell the previous day, so when he went to bed he had carefully set it beside his pillow, next to the wall. The rocking and tapping from inside the egg had been growing more and more insistent, and the crack appeared to be deepening... for now, though, Kaoru was fast asleep, one palm flat on the bed near Tama-chan]

[It was long after Kaoru had fallen asleep that the creature inside the egg finally started to make its way out. After several hours of egg-wiggling and shell-cracking, the sharp tip of a horn finally poked its way out of the shell with a loud crack. From there several small fissues ran down the side of the egg, eventually ending with the egg cracking apart on itself.

If Kaoru manages to wake up in time, he'll see a baby anklegator, about three feet long with a horn as big as Kaoru's hand from wrist-to-fingertip, flop out of the egg shell.

[Tama-chan does not answer, since anklegators can't talk. But she will immediately recognize Kaoru's voice and go rub up against him while making happy snake-reptile-thing noises, because she found her mama and all is right in the world.]
