Event: Day 265 [OPEN]

Who: Several NPCs and you
Open: Open
When: Day 265
Where: The Bastion in general
What: Everyone adjusting to the new land, plus some bad news from Nathaniel.
Format: action
Warnings: Lnone

[First, the good news: everyone came back more or less alive and well, and they had a core! After some deliberation, eventually it was decided upon that adding more land to the Bastion (as well as improving the efficiency of power use in the Bastion, so that the extra land is not a strain on the already limited power) is the best use of this Core.

Once the core has been integrated into the Bastion, the land expanse is almost immediate. Several chunks of the nearby Skyway (monster-free, thankfully) attach themselves to the Bastion, nearly doubling the available land. In addition to the flat plains, lake, river, and hills, there is much more flat land, and a few sharp peaks (nowhere near tall enough to be actual mountains, but they are made of rock and have the same jagged edges and steep inclines that a mountain would have) have attached themselves to the north-eastern side of the Bastion.

In addition, several empty buildings have sprung up in the south and western parts of the Bastion, along with a large empty area clearly left open for tents or more structures. With all of the new land and buildings, the Bastion should be able to hold several hundred residents comfortably. Provided the people could be found to fill those spaces, the Bastion could be a small town now!

But today is not entirely a day of good news. Around midday, Nathaniel calls a meeting by the monument to discuss some things, and he doesn't look happy at all.
]

Okay guys, I'm just going to be honest here. We've got some trouble brewing.

For starters, I haven't been able to pick up the energy signal from that other core. Either it's been buried, or it fell off the Skyway, or something else got to it. It may come up later, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Along with that, we've got another mess on our hands now. Remember that group of Ura that you guys have been talking to? Well, they left this letter in the place where we leave written communication with them. Zahi translated it for me, and long story short, their crops failed and they're asking us for help.

We can give them supplies, but the farm doesn't grow enough to feed both us and them. If we found another core we could expand the farms to make it feasible, but there's no telling when we'll find another core. Our other option is to start growing our own farms on top of what the automated farm grows for us, but that won't actually help for several weeks, even months. They could possibly starve by the time that pays off. There's also the problem of how to get the sheer volume of food they need out to where they are. Their numbers are about equal to ours, and it's not a trip we could make every day, and most foods would spoil by the time we got it to where they are, so that's something to keep in mind too.

As near as I can tell, we can either help them out until they can grow more food, or we can ignore the request and let them fend for themselves. If any of you guys have another idea of what to do, we can discuss it.

I'll leave the decision up to you guys, but whatever you choose, make the decision quick, so that whatever you decide to do can be put into motion as soon as possible.

What am I going to do? You mean about the blockers, or the Ura thing?

[She bows politely toward the newcomer.] The Emissary. Charmed.

And I'm glad to hear there's some good will outstanding. That's a viable starting point, at the very least.

[A relaxed shrug and a "don't worry about it" gesture. They're not in that deep.]

[You'd be damaging his nervous system, not his skull.

[...There's a lot he could say here, but-]

Why did you install a turret on the barge?

Whatever's needed. I am a diplomat - I could help with the mediation effort, as a neutral third party if nothing else.

[Oh right Paar is a huge dragon.]

How much weight do you think you could carry? I don't think it would be a good idea to rely on you for every trip, that's asking a lot of you, but even once to give them emergency supplies while they figure something out would be a good idea.

Basically, there's another group of people who are living out on the Skyway. But they aren't on the best terms with the people who made the Bastion, which is why communicating with them has been iffy at best so far.

Think of it like how different countries don't always get along, and sometimes they might go to war with each other, and how two countries just ended a war not too long ago but now one country needs the help of the one they had been fighting with.

The Bastion can do some pretty crazy stuff, right? What if we used our shards to make some sort of fast-traveling car, or plane, or something? If speed is the problem, then at least one of us should be able to come up with a vehicle fast enough to make it a non-problem, right?
freedom_engineer: (Default)

[personal profile] freedom_engineer 2014-12-30 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
Because Zahi recommended it, and frankly, it's a sitting duck for everything from Gasfella to Pecker without some sort of defense.

A boat that can't defend itself is bait, whether in the air, on the ocean, or in space.
kyotoprincess: (deep thought)

[personal profile] kyotoprincess 2014-12-30 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
I think we're all in agreement that leaving them to starve isn't an option.

With that in mind, why not include them in the decision-making process? It sounds like we've got a few ideas bouncing around, so what if we formed them into concrete plans, and then a group of people took the plans to them and asked them for their thoughts? They might even be able to help us with part of the transportation, like someone else suggested.

Would military rations be easier to find than just using shards to make a bunch of ramen? I mean, ramen's not exactly a long-term diet food, but it should at least be a good staple to include with other foods, right? And it was so cheap back in my world, I can't imagine it would cost a lot of shards to make.
bakegarasu: (he's a cold hearted snake)

[personal profile] bakegarasu 2014-12-30 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
[He will fight you, don't think he won't.]

I'm just saying that they're not really our concern. They should have planned better.
bakegarasu: (dream a little dream)

[personal profile] bakegarasu 2014-12-30 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
Are they? What good are they for us?

[He's not exactly unfamiliar with political maneuvering, though most of it that he knows is from the yakuza.]
bakegarasu: (wrong is right)

[personal profile] bakegarasu 2014-12-30 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
[And he's one of those types, sorry Aoi.]

Not really? I mean, I don't exactly know them since I just got here a couple days ago, but... if they're not useful, then they don't exactly deserve help.
freedom_engineer: (Contemplative)

[personal profile] freedom_engineer 2014-12-30 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
That... isn't a bad idea, actually.

[Colin nods appreciatively at that.]

... Though, if we go out there, we should at least bring some of the stuff we've got in the stores as a show of good faith. I don't know how they're doing on food right this minute, but some canned goods would definitely be a good thing...
notachickenhawk: (bird: what?)

[personal profile] notachickenhawk 2014-12-30 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
<Yeah. Would it be possible to pool shards to get them some kind of setup like what we have and transport it over there? I have no idea how much something like that would cost. Even something like a wood-powered generator and a fridge might be helpful.>
fuckthemancers: (I set my sail)

[personal profile] fuckthemancers 2014-12-30 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
Quite. It's also the reason I want to help them to the best of our ability... It isn't right to leave them in such a situation when we possess the means to help.
fuckthemancers: (rockafiller) (The other day I was really high)

[personal profile] fuckthemancers 2014-12-30 08:41 am (UTC)(link)
[Zahi's name seems to soothe his concerns, although he still gives a sigh.]

A valid point I suppose... Anyway, back to our main discussion. Do we necessarily have to do a huge load to send them?
wayofvoice: (Zun Haal Viik + Where you used to be)

[personal profile] wayofvoice 2014-12-30 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
[That he is. Grampa is ripped.]

I have carried mammoths and large boulders in my claws before, and that has been with flight. If I were to restrict myself to the ground, I am certain I could carry more. I would merely be much slower.

[u wanna fuckin go]

Did you plan coming here?
bakegarasu: (let the bodies hit the floor)

[personal profile] bakegarasu 2014-12-30 08:47 am (UTC)(link)
No, but I adapted. I didn't plan on dying, either.

[Let's fuckin go.]
scary_music: (Land ho!)

[personal profile] scary_music 2014-12-30 08:53 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, but Colin-sama-chan, Ibuki can already make music! What else would she want to make???
scary_music: (Too stressful!)

[personal profile] scary_music 2014-12-30 08:54 am (UTC)(link)
Ooooohhh...

Politics is so not Ibuki's thing! Who knows what might happen if Ibuki makes a suggestion?

Suddenly, uwah! Terrible things everywhere! If only they hadn't listened to Ibuki!!!
freedom_engineer: (Contemplative)

[personal profile] freedom_engineer 2014-12-30 08:55 am (UTC)(link)
At first, no.

But if their crops were a bust, that means their whole society is going to be without food soon.

And THAT means we're going to need to bring enough food, daily, for at least two meals for every person.

The math behind that is unpleasant, to say the least.
