[open] Day 215 - outside the Forge
Who: Toph & you!
Open: Open
When: 215, afternoon
Where: Outside the Forge
What: With her bending limited, Toph is looking for another way to fight.
Format: Will match!
Warnings: Excessive levels of awesome from Toph...err...I mean... none.
It's taken Toph a few days to come to terms with the fact that there are ridiculous limitations on her bending. She's tested and retested them, trying to see where she can push it, but everything leads to the same inevitable conclusion. Her bending is limited.
So what's she going to do about it? No way is she going to accept just sitting around and helping out with little odds and ends in this place. She wants to be out on that Skyway, kicking ass and maybe finding Aang, Katara, and Sokka. She needs to find some way of fighting that plays to her strengths without relying on her bending...which probably means learning to fight with a weapon. If Sokka could do it, it can't be that hard.
The question then is — what kind of weapon should she get? Which is how she ends up outside the Forge that afternoon, examining weapons and trying to determine what would work best for her.

"So what are you looking at weapons for?"

"If you're going to fight with a weapon, it should be something you can think of as an extension of your body. I've seen other earthbenders use hammers. I don't know if that fits with your style."
no subject
"I'm not interested in one-to-one honor battles," she responds in regards to hand-to-hand. "I wanna be able to take down monsters on the Skyway."

Zuko considers the weapons in the forge. Anything ranged is out of the question, and she can't see Toph wanting any kind of polearm, even if she isn't thinking of the wooden shafts being a problem.
"Well, what do you think of swords? That's something I could teach you."
no subject
"Okay. Let's give swords a go."
no subject
"Here. See how this feels."
no subject
She grins. "I like it."
no subject
"My old master might have started you on calligraphy, but... I think we'll skip that part. There are some practice swords at the training building, though."

"I don't want you hitting me with that one."
no subject
"...okay. I get the point of a practice sword now."
no subject
"At least until you get some control. You want to head over there now?"

Still, she will turn to lead the way over to the training building.

Toph doesn't say anything else until they reach the the training grounds. "So how do we start?"
no subject
"With your grip," she answers. She takes one of the training swords and hands it to Toph. It's roughly the same weight and balance as the real one--roughly--but the edges are completely blunt. "You want it firm enough that your opponent can't knock the sword out of your hand, but if you hold on too tightly, you stiffen up. You should think of it as an extension of your arm."
no subject
She takes the practice sword and tries to grip it like Zuko says. "You know, it'd be easier to think of it as an extension of my arm if it wasn't wood. I know metal's sharp and all, but do you have any made of rock?"
no subject
"They don't exactly make stone practice swords. Anyway it's not like the rest of us are metalbenders."
