[Day 212] Well it woulda been coulda been worse than you would ever know... [OPEN]

Who: Everyone!
Open: Open
When: Day 212, evening
Where: in front of the Distillery
What: No one died during the horrible plague scare! That's reason enough for a feast and a mingle log right?
Format: Any!
Warnings: Shouldn't be any but will adjust if needed

[Someone has been busy today. The kitchen and Distillery has been noisy and bustling, a departure from the much more quiet days when the illness was spreading through the Bastion and survival was once more on the uncertain scale of things. Somewhere around the time that the night cycle begins, when the sky is more of an orange-ish glow fading in to blue and purple, a large spread of food has been set up near the Distillery with glass lanterns hanging overhead.

Just like any other time there has been a feast be it random or planned, there is a wide selection of food on the covered, decorated tables. There's even meat this time! And yes, Aoi, your doughnuts have been transferred from your trees to a platter on the table. There's even a section for Paar, complete with massive amounts of bbq'd mammoth meat! You can thank Colin for that.

There's really no announcement for the feast, but chances are if you're outside at any point today you'll see the progress towards the set up, or smell the delicious scents wafting over the Bastion. (There might even be music playing, if Colin finds a way to provide it!)

Either way, come dusk food will be ready and mingling will be had!]

(ooc: Standard mingle log right here. Throw your threads up, poke other people's threads, and eat all the food!)

It seems like that for most people here.

[You'd think there'd be at least a few other decent cooks. Or maybe they're in hiding; it does seem like a lot of work.

Time to try a bite of mammoth anyway.]

...this isn't bad.

Cooking is a remarkably challenging skill to learn, and even harder to master. I need to convince Rin of that fact, but she still thinks that she's dumb and hasn't got much going for her.

[Colin rolls his eyes at that, and he grins at Zuko then.]

I'm glad to hear that you like it.

Mammoth is a rare thing to cook, but with Paar's help, it's becoming a staple of most of our diets. Now that we've got the giant barbecue, it should be even easier to make better dishes out of it.

She is pretty hard on herself.

[Still not thrilled about being grinned at, but she'll put up with it.]

Maybe Rin should teach some lessons of her own.

[personal profile] freedom_engineer 2014-07-24 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I keep trying to convince her that she could. I don't think she believes me. Not all that surprising, really.

She might listen to you, though. You two have more of a professional friendship, right?
daughterofursa: (tea is not the answer to everything)

[personal profile] daughterofursa 2014-07-24 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
A professional friendship?

[What is that supposed to mean?]
freedom_engineer: (Head cocked)

[personal profile] freedom_engineer 2014-07-24 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
You're teaching her how to better work with her flames, right?

She respects you and trusts you enough to listen to your instruction. Not an easy thing for Rin to do, she's been figuratively burned a lot in her life.
daughterofursa: (irritated)

[personal profile] daughterofursa 2014-07-24 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
[Figuratively burned. Nice word choice there Colin.]

She needed a teacher, and I have a lot of experience with fire. It made sense, that's all.
freedom_engineer: (Head cocked)

[personal profile] freedom_engineer 2014-07-24 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe, maybe. But Rin's always struck me as the sort to rebel against authority... At least in her past. She's mellowed in her time here.

If she's listening to you, there's a reason for it. Don't sell yourself short either, Zuko. Anyone can see that you've got talent.
daughterofursa: (yes. I juggled.)

[personal profile] daughterofursa 2014-07-24 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't that exactly why I said she's listening to me?

[She may be too hard on herself about everything else, but she knows she's a pretty good firebender by now.]
freedom_engineer: (Irritation)

[personal profile] freedom_engineer 2014-07-24 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not what I...

Hrm...

I'm trying to compliment you, and you're not making it easy to find the right words.
daughterofursa: (tea is not the answer to everything)

[personal profile] daughterofursa 2014-07-24 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
What?

No one asked you for compliments.
freedom_engineer: (Default)

[personal profile] freedom_engineer 2014-07-24 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
And if you had, you wouldn't be getting them in the first place.
daughterofursa: (yes. I juggled.)

[personal profile] daughterofursa 2014-07-24 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Fine.

Give me compliments.

[Now she won't get them, right?]
freedom_engineer: (Humorous)

[personal profile] freedom_engineer 2014-07-24 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
You're cute, a fine fighter, a good team player in spite of your unease, and an asset to the Bastion as a whole.

[Colin gives her an absolutely amused grin. That didn't work out very well for you, did it Zuko?]

You are not, however, especially well learned in verbal combat. There's no way you shouldn't have seen that coming.
daughterofursa: (pout)

[personal profile] daughterofursa 2014-07-25 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
[Cute? How is she cute??]

A conversation isn't supposed to be combat.

[And yet Zuko tends to make it that way sometimes.]
freedom_engineer: (Humorous)

[personal profile] freedom_engineer 2014-07-25 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
[He'd have said "Adorable" instead, but that tends to get him in more trouble.]

Don't blame me. You're the one who tried to get me to change my words with your own.

[So very amused at her. Just when he was afraid interactions with her would never be enjoyable...]
daughterofursa: (yes. I juggled.)

[personal profile] daughterofursa 2014-07-25 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
You're the one who said you wouldn't compliment me if I asked for it!
freedom_engineer: (Head cocked)

[personal profile] freedom_engineer 2014-07-25 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
As a general rule of command, anyone looking for compliments is generally undeserving of them. THAT is what I was inferring.

We can continue this discussion if you like. I really don't mind, but something tells me that I'm only going to wind up further infuriating you...
daughterofursa: (pout)

[personal profile] daughterofursa 2014-07-25 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
[Zuko huffs.]

You seem to have a talent for it.
freedom_engineer: (Default)

[personal profile] freedom_engineer 2014-07-25 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
In many cultures, yes. In many other cultures, I fit right in. In a couple of cultures, I would be executed after five minutes of running my mouth. Fun, yes?
daughterofursa: (whatever)

[personal profile] daughterofursa 2014-07-25 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
That's going a little far.

I'd have just had someone else talk to you for me.

[She may not like him, but she recognizes he has some kind of useful skills... probably.]
freedom_engineer: (Head cocked)

[personal profile] freedom_engineer 2014-07-26 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Again, it depends on the culture. Psilons, for example, are a race that places science, knowledge, and demonstrations of knowledge above all else. The arrogance you see in me is a cultural norm, there.

Bulrathi on the other hand, before they were wiped out, were a race of rough-around-the-edges conquerors. They had little patience for talk, and less patience for people being as full of themselves as I am. Conversations among them tended to be friendly, or end in a fight.

The Humans and the Darlocks wiped their empire from the galactic map, though. When you've got neighbors that can defend themselves, being a race of conquerors isn't exactly to your advantage...

Still, can't fault you for that bit of wisdom. Back home I had two handlers who did the social thing for me.
daughterofursa: (tea is not the answer to everything)

[personal profile] daughterofursa 2014-07-26 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[Zuko did not ask for the examples. She's kind of understanding that Bulrathi lack of patience for Colin types here.]

Maybe that's something to look into.
