It was an extremely average day,
Without a single obstacle in my path
Until I was bored, listening to the radio,
And I heard this voice that said:
"It's very unfortunate I have to say this,
But the world is going to end today"

[ She stood there, frozen, eyes wide and breathing heavy.

Takane didn't know what had happened. One moment, she was turning around to make her way out of the school. The next ... she was here.

In a place she didn't recognize.

In a place that was ...

She didn't even know how to describe it.

Takane slowly turned around, eyes scanning the area she now found herself in. Did she fall asleep again? Was she dreaming?

No, she had to wake up. Haruka was at the hospital. She needed to go see him! She had to find him and tell him-- ]

AUGH! Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, WAKE UUUUUUP!

[ ... But clearly, that wasn't working. Takane frowned. Okay. She started walking, looking around. Maybe if she walked around long enough, she'd wake up.

Or figure out what was going on.

No way this wasn't a dream or something, though. She'd have to wake up sometime.

Takane walked for a while, keeping an eye out for anything that might clue her in as to what was going on. She didn't find one.

But she did find something else.

The moment she saw him, her eyes widened again and she could have sworn her heart stopped. She rushed over to the limp, unmoving form of her ~~love~~ friend, placing a hand on his arm and shaking him a little.

He couldn't be here. Not really. This was just a dream, right? Haruka was in the hospital.

Still, her emotions at seeing him like this were very real. ]

H-Hey ... Hey, Haruka ... Haruka, wake up ...

[ Tears welled up in her eyes again, and she roughly took him into her arms, shaking him a little more. ]

Haruka ... Haruka! Hey! Wake up, Haruka!

[ Those tears rolled down her cheeks. No, nonono. He wasn't waking up. This was a dream, and she still couldn't do anything. She was totally useless. ]

HELP!

[ She screamed out the word, looking around to see if maybe anyone was around to hear it. ]

HELP! WE NEED HELP! SOMEONE, ANYONE, PLEASE! P-Please ...

[Yukio's words perked Haruka up, and he leaned over past them to see Takane sleeping away. He smiled at that.]

She's alright... I'm so glad...

[He relaxed against the pillows then, looking back at the others.]

The Bastion? Skyway?

[... yup. Confused teenager is utterly confused.]

[Right with Ryu on this one. There isn't really a good way to explain the Bastion, is there? And honestly? He's a little worried about having this conversation with someone who obviously has some sort of heart condition, but it's not as it it can be put off forever. The kid seems fairly calm as of now, so hopefully things will be alright.]

... It's going to be difficult to believe, but the short version is that you've been transported to a different world. Whether you were on Earth or somewhere else, you're here now, and we call this place The Bastion.

[Colin nods in agreement.]

It's a difficult situation to accurately explain, but the important thing is that we found you, and we brought you back here where you should be able to recover.

How are you feeling?

This place brings in people from really different worlds sometimes. So not everyone will know the same kinds of things you do.

[Ryu does not know how to hospital, for example.]

Transported... to a different world... ?

[Well then.

Haruka stares at them, letting out an odd, nervous sounding laugh.]

That's--... but I collapsed again. At school-- ... this is... just a strange dream, right... ?

[Collapsed "again"? Geez, kid. Yuki's definitely going to have to pester him for a proper medical history.]

Unfortunately, no. That's what I thought at first, too.

As he says, it's not a dream. I can pinch you, but I'd rather not harm you further in the name of convincing you this is real.

[Colin gives Yukio a small grin, he knows what the Doctor's thinking.]

Do you and Takane have anything that we should know about since we've got you in the hospital here? I think we can all agree that an unnecesaary surprise would be a "bad thing."

[He adds air quotes to that last one.]

... This isn't a dream, no. We've been here too long for it to be any kind of dream.

[He'll just... go quiet again because he doesn't understand medical stuff.]

[Thank you for covering that, Colin.

Though it makes Haruka frown even more.

Not a dream. What about that woman speaking him to in that void... ?

If this wasn't a dream then that one had to be, right? He certainly didn't feel as though his body was breaking apart. If anything he was far too achy for anything like that.

But that also makes him realize... all of his medical history, all of his files... they're gone now. Not even the doctors that cared for him from his childhood on are around.

He's going to have to start all over.

And he won't have any of his medication.

He is not the type of person to wear worry on his face often, but for once it reads on him clearly, hand rubbing at the stitches on his chest.

Had they even been able to repair what needed to be repaired... ? He didn't know. He had been unconscious when he'd gone under...]

Takane never told me what her condition was called, but it's a type of narcolepsy. She's always tired, even when she sleeps a lot.

[He lifted his head, looking at her in the bed.]

She's never collapsed like I have, though.

[So he has no idea what happened to put her in that state, and it hurts him to see her that way.]

I have coarctation of the aorta. I wasn't diagnosed until I was in middle school, though, so I was on medicinal therapy... I had taken my medication today but... I was having trouble breathing and moving in class. I must have passed out and been taken to the hospital by Tateyama-sensei--

[Oh.

Oh no.]

Was there anyone else out there?!

I'm going to need to know what kind of medications you were on...

[Yukio reaches into his back pocket and starts scribbling some quick notes as Haruka talks. He's already at a major disadvantage in dealing with this sort of condition, and having to start his and Takane's medical records over from scratch is only going to make things more difficult.

Handling these kids is going to take a lot of research that he's not entirely sure how to start, but for Haruka's sake he keeps any anxiety out of his expression.]

I can look it up in a medical textbook if he doesn't remember...

[Colin frowns slightly, and he sighs. Yeah, it's coming down to him, isn't it?]

You two were the only ones we found out there. Heck, you were the only thing we found out there, other than a half-ruined gurney that we had to cannibalize for parts to make a stretcher...

[Ryu nods, and looks up at Colin. He's not sure what to do, since Yukio and Haruka are both using a lot of words he doesn't know. Should he be worried? It sounds like he should be worried, but he's not sure.]

No one... ?

[Haruka's shoulders slump, gaze going to his hands.

Tateyama-sensei... Ayano... Shintaro... all of the students in that school, all of the people in the hospital, and only he and Takane... ?

His fingers curled in to the scratchy blanket, but it only lasted a moment before he sighed and let go, lifting his head up with...

a smile.]

At least Takane is here with me.

[And that was all he was going to say about it. No reaction beyond that.

Well, aside from leaning over to list his medication to Yukio.]

You'll have to ask Takane when she's awake about hers..

[The lack of a normal reaction is a concern in itself, at least to Yukio. He's a very logical and composed sort of guy most of the time, and he didn't take the news nearly this well on arrival. In fact, he might've dug himself a mental pit of denial and hidden in it for a few days while avoiding his only remaining family in the universe in favor of wandering the Bastion and sleeping on benches.

But now isn't the time to press. If Haruka can keep himself calm, best to let stay that way.

He jots down the medications as they're listed off, lips turning down in a little frown.
He recognizes some of these, and they're nothing he knows how to produce or procure, but scarier than that are the names he doesn't recognize at all.]

I definitely will.

[Colin glances at Yukio, and he gives him a faint smile.]

I've got some texts handy that you might be able to consult for anything you're unfamiliar with, Doctor. I know that this isn't your specialty.

[He looks back to Ryu then, and he grins.]

And just think, Ryu. This isn't even the worst kinda of complexity we can see in medicine. You're keeping up with it very well.

[Finally, he looks back at Haruka.]

The surgery you had... is this the first heart surgery you've undergone?

I'm trying. There's nothing like this in my world. There's healing magic, but that can only do so much.

[He doesn't feel like he's keeping up well at all, but Colin's words make him feel a little better.]

[Haruka has spent his entire life smiling even when he felt physically miserable. This is no different.

Given enough time, he'll have that moment everyone does where the reality hits and he can't keep up that smile. His will just be... later than others.]

It was! My doctors were trying to hold off on that. They were hoping my medicine would have been enough since I didn't start having symptoms until I was in middle school.

Ah... why?

[Colin, you are a life saver. Yukio's frown fades, but not entirely as he listens to Haruka's explanation. Such a sudden spiral down seems strange. He's no cardiac specialist, but he knows that heart problems can go undetected for years, the symptoms either nonexistent of manifesting in ways that just don't draw enough attention.

Even so, to have be overtaken by his symptoms so quickly, even while on medication...]

[Colin is wondering much the same, Yukio. ESPECIALLY since Takane was definitely poisoned... Still, no sense to worry the kid right now. Especially since he'll have enough to worry about once the weight of the situation hits him]

Just trying to get a background for your condition. Also, trying to determine how much you've been through. Since this is your first, I can probably patch up those surgical incisions. Far easier than waiting for them to heal.

[He grins at Ryu.]

Yeah, this is a complex field, probably one of the few that's more complex than the work I do. People study for years to become doctors, and longer still to keep up to date.

You kinda dove into the deep end with us on this one.

[Says the guy who's done two rather advanced treatments without any hands on training.]

Yeah... I can tell. I've seen the insides of monsters after battles, but never a person's insides. It might depend which kind of person, too - I don't know if the insides of someone from the Wing Clan would be different than the Frog Clan, or something like that. Most healers can help close wounds or get rid of poison, and in towns you can usually find someone who knows how to set a bone, but there's not a lot of stuff like in here.

[He's heard of places where those injured in battles are taken to rest, but those places tend to be places where people die more often than they recover.]

In all seriousness though, even Haruka had found it strange to have taken his usual medication that day only to feel so weak, worn down and achy by the time afternoon classes had rolled around.

He just couldn't think at all over what could have caused it...

Just like before, though, he approached all of this with a smile, though this one was more apologetic than the first.]

I'm sorry for being so much trouble.

[Yukio smiles at Ryu.]

If you'd like to learn some basics, I'd be more than willing to teach you. Everyone should at least a little knowledge of first aid.

[Now, now, Haruka, none of that. You're going head to head with a fellow stepford smiler.]

There's nothing to apologize for. We all have to try to take care of each other here.

If anyone here needs to apologize for anything, I'll eat a sheet. You can't help if your health takes a turn for the worse. We're just here to patch you back up, and see to it that you're okay.

[Colin smiles, and he looks at Ryu.]

It would be handy to learn, and I recommend taking him up on it. I was only able to help Rin the way I did because of my first aid training. In the meantime though, can you grab me some warm water and towels? I want to close those incisions, and we need to remove the sutures.

[He glances at Yukio.]

If you think it's okay, that is.

[He pauses, then he rubs the back of his head sheepishly and looks at Haruka.]

And, naturally... if you want me to. Sorry, getting ahead of myself. I do that sometimes.

Sure. I can bandage wounds but that's about it...

[This place doesn't have fish that cure things and that's weird. But Ryu nods and scurries off to find the warm water and towels. It shouldn't take him too long, and getting those kinds of things would probably be good anyway no matter what they decide to do.]

Oh... well...

[Sheepish Haruka is sheepish.]

Uhm. If it's not too much trouble. I would like to get better as soon as I can.

[I just want to be normal...!
