[Day 191 | Open] What's that familiar sizzling sound?

Three days ago, Colin introduced his new buildings to the Bastion. This morning, the lab's work had finally come to fruition. Colin brought a slab of skillet-ready bacon to the kitchen, first thing in the morning. The kitchen was freshly upgraded, how fitting it would be to have it broken in with fresh meat?

Rin had been apprehensive at first. Artificial meat couldn't be good, could it? But that apprehension seemed to melt away gradually like so much fat off of sizzling meat as the bacon cooked.

So, when everyone shows up for breakfast, there's a giant serving platter loaded down with bacon to go along with the rest of the breakfast for the day.

Go nuts, everyone.

Okay.

He'd been right.

Of course if she said that aloud she was sure he would respond with "I'm always right, RinRin!"

And she would bristle and he would just laugh and she would have to resist the urge to punch him yet again because like hell she's ever giving him the satisfaction.

Besides, he did make the kitchen pretty damn shiny...

Clearly her "thank you" to him is not punching him. Or something.

Whatever.

Point being, that meat was actually really good, and she could barely tell the difference between it and the bacon she would have back home.

After getting everything cooked and set out for breakfast, Rin will be sitting in the distillery proper, taking her own meal there after a quick "thank you for the meal". She's opened to be bothered about the sudden appearance of meat that isn't related to Skyway creatures or mammoths, that is if you're not inclined to ask Colin himself.

[ Kohaku hadn't exactly been making herself very social after learning about this place, and why she was here. Actually, she'd been taking a lot of time to mope about the situation. Eventually, though, she realized that moping wasn't going to do her any good now that she was here. Sure, she was still emotional, and it probably showed in how she carried herself.

But ... there really was no point to doing absolutely nothing. Even at the end of the world.

So of course, when she passes by Rin today, she tries to move past whatever emotional block she has going on to say one amazing, wonderful thing to her: ]

... Hi.

[ ... okay, maybe that wasn't so amazing or wonderful. ]

[Now that's a sound he hasn't heard in a while. Tobias peeks in while he's getting back from his morning visit to the Skyway, and is honestly surprised to see it. Eating it like this would probably be a bad idea, though.]

[So soon, there's a tall, skinny boy with dirty blond hair heading into the kitchen, still wearing the clothes Roxas loaned him. He's squinting quite a bit, but it's not so much that he can't see what's going on.]

Is this... for everyone?

[He might as well ask first. And his voice probably sounds familiar.]

[At this point it's somewhat of a foregone conclusion that the smell of something cooking would summon the resident dhampire. The smell of cooking meat just happens to have him there well before half the bacon is done, and sans most of his usual attire. As far as he's concerned, bacon is worth far more than bothering with anything more than shirt, pants, and shoes.]

Dig in, I brought enough for everyone, and then some.

[Colin's seated at a table nearby, sipping a glass of juice with a plate of sliced fruit in front of him.]

Where did this come from?

[Not that he really cares. It still smells really good.]

It came from the new facility I brought in, out back at the farm. A meat plant.

[Technically true.]

...

[Tobias looks vaguely ill. He has bad memories about meat plants.]

I didn't hear any pigs.

Nope, you didn't. No animals were harmed in the creation of this bacon.

[The expression of illness doesn't escape him, but if Tobias wants to comment, he will.]

[He lets out a relieved breath.]

It's probably kind of weird since I... kill and eat things normally. I've just... been inside a meat plant before. As a cow. It wasn't fun.

Ah. Yes, I can see how that would be an unsettling experience.

Rest assured, none of that's going on here. I actually brought in this facility so we wouldn't need a slaughterhouse.

[Colin grins slightly as Alucard comes in, and he nods.]

Not at all surprised to see you here, Alucard. I bet the scent could be detected all the way at the skyway.

Thanks.

[... Huh.]

Now that I think about it, it's been something like two and a half years since I've had bacon.

[Alucard nods in greeting.]

It would not be surprising if that were the case. The scent is quite strong.

Well, by all means, treat yourself to some!

This is good stuff, quite fresh.

I figured that a good, sizzling bacon would be the best way to let everyone know that the new facility was up and running.

[Colin smiles, and gestures to the platter.]

By all means, help yourself, we've got plenty.

Now that the food's all done, and Rin doesn't look harried, NOW Colin decides to check in with her.

He doesn't actually want to gloat, but it may come off as such. Poor Colin.

"So, were the any problems with the cooking?" he asks her, carrying a small plate of fruit.

[He nods, and takes a few slices for himself, taking a bite. His eyes widen a bit. It's been too long.]

... It's really good.

It really has been a while, hasn't it?

Don't be shy, there's plenty for everyone.

[He grins warmly at Tobias. This is what he likes, giving people stuff they didn't know they wanted.]

Hawks don't exactly cook.

[And it was never worth getting breakfast food at the mall. No one there ever did breakfast well.]

Zuko may be accustomed by now to fish being the primary source of meat in her diet, but growing up in the Fire Nation there was a lot more variety. The strong scent of bacon is familiar to her, too, though she may not be thinking of quite the same animal as everyone else.

"...did we get some pig chickens or something?"

She doesn't need the question answered to gravitate towards the platter and... maybe reach for a piece. As long as no one objects.

The lack of opposing digits, to say nothing of hands, does lend extra difficulty to common tasks, certainly.

[Colin nods appreciatively in consideration of that.]

Still, I don't think you'll need to worry about that now. With everything out at the farm, we should have plenty of food for quite some time.

"Not quite," Colin says. He's long since finished his meal, and now he's simply relaxing. He's also running various scenarios through his head for the future, but that's hardly something that can be observed.

"We've got a new facility at the farm that should keep us supplied with meat for the foreseeable future," he continues.

True. Though it'd be nice if there were some mice or rabbits to eat.

[Squirts don't taste right, unfortunately.]

"What kind of facility produces bacon without there being any livestock?"

Well, no one's stopping her. She snags a piece and takes a bite. It sure tastes like pig chicken.
