What: The past few days have been difficult, but Rin is in a surprisingly good mood today. Apparently that's enough to warrant randomly singing??

[The past few days had been a whirlwind of emotion. Some good, some bad, but all of it actually fairly exhausting. In it, though, Rin had gotten out some much needed things that had been bottling up for some time, and in a stark contrast to the anger that had nearly destroyed the kitchen, she found herself in a surprisingly good mood this day.

Like. Really good mood.

Good enough to apparently sing. Which she didn't do very often at all. Sometimes she could be caught humming a song while working, but actually singing something?

Well, she did used to be in the church choir growing up, so it wasn't that far fetched of an idea. But it had been years since then, and her voice was a little out of practice.

Still, something about that good mood compelled her to make her way over to the gazebo where the piano was. She couldn't play (Yuki could, but even she had fallen out of practice with that in recent years, too) but she knew enough to strike a note and start from there. She wasn't singing to anyone in particular, and the song that came out of here surprisingly wasn't a church hymn.]

[It didn't quite sound the same without some accompaniment, but she still got rather in to it. Enough that she probably wouldn't notice if some one stopped to listen...]

[Zuko will see your good mood and match you an equally bad one. It's only her second day here, and while she doesn't feel so close to breaking down anymore, the whole end of the world concept is still weighing on her pretty heavily.]

How can you sing in a situation like this?

[Oops. Sorry, Zuko.

Rin stops mid-note, both eyebrows going up as her tail gives a visible twitch behind her.]

... d'you really wanna hear the answer to that or are you just askin' cause you're pissy?

[She's been here long enough to recognize the "newbie pissed off that the world ended" tone.]

[Oh. She didn't notice the tail. Of course, she's seen some pretty strange-looking people walking around since yesterday so she barely blinks an eye at it. Fine, so the end of the world is fully of weirdos instead of anyone she cares about.

The answer to Rin's question is really that she's pissy, but she's not about to admit to that. Zuko folds her arms.]

No, go ahead. Tell me. What's so great that you have to sing about it?

[Huh. She wasn't expecting that, and she blinks a few times, big blue eyes showing momentary confusion.

Eventually, though, she shrugs, finger moving over to pluck at one of the piano keys idly.]

I'unno. I got a lotta things off my chest recently and I guess I'm feelin' pretty good for it. I know it sucks, bein' in the situation but... it could be a lot worse. Hell, it was a lot worse, not that long ago.

You're probably too new to realize it, but... we've come a long way. This place used to be tiny, and we barely had enough to feed everyone...

Forgive me if I don't see that as much of an up side.

[In a way it's almost worse. Here she is in a place where she could live in relative comfort, while the rest of her world perished. She could have at least fought her way here.

If this is what you'd call luck, then she definitely doesn't want it.]

[Rin sighed at that, crossing her arms over her chest and leaning against the piano.]

Well... that's your choice then. I ain't here to make anyone see a different side to all this, that's just how I feel about it.

For whatever it's worth, though... just remember that you ain't the only one who lost people here. We're all did.

[She wants to say that maybe they didn't mean as much if Rin is in such a chipper mood, but even she realizes it's a dumb thing to say. Some people are better at moving on than others.

Instead she sighs and admits:]

I only got here yesterday. It's... hard.

[Some people were forced to move on even before the world ended. And Rin would be lying if she said she was completely okay all of the time. Her heart constantly hurts at the absence of her sister, and not a day goes by she doesn't think about her classmates...]

... it is. I ain't sayin' it isn't. I ain't sayin' it's ever gonna not be hard. But we're alive, right? And this place can't run on it's own...

[She's in no position to force anyone to find a place in the Bastion, but she'll certainly encourage it.]

...It sounds like you're feeling much better. That's good to hear.

[Zulf stays quiet until Rin finishes with her music, standing just a ways away. Unlike Rin, he actually... Wow, Zulf has actually managed to look worse than when Nathaniel punched him in the face. It's nothing really physical- although he does have some bruises under his clothes which no one's ever going to see- but just that he looks worn down. Exhausted. Someone hasn't been sleeping well.]

I think we were all concerned for you, just somewhat. I know Colin certainly was.

[At least Zuko doesn't have to deal with missing her sister.]

...what do you mean by that?

[Having some one suddenly there is a bit startling, especially since she can't hear over her own voice carrying out. But she doesn't jump much, simply turning to see Zulf. For a second she smiles, but it fades rather quickly at the wariness written all over his face.]

... I know. I think you were right, though. I just needed to get it outta my system.

[Her lips press together, but she can't keep quiet long, stepping down the steps of the gazebo after crossing to them.]

What's wrong?

[She doesn't even have to assume, she just knows.]

[Yuki is a saint in comparison to Azula.]

It won't bring anythin' back, but we've survived this long because everyone is workin' together. If anythin'... it makes you feel like you've got a purpose in all this.

I've found that bottling things up doesn't really help. I'm glad my advice did something for you.

[There's just a slight tilt to his head when she starts to come closer. At the question, he grimaces just a little. Ah..]

[Join the Ura religion, they don't deal with bullshit like Satan. You just have to avoid pissing off the Gods.]

I've just... been having a bit of trouble getting to sleep. I'm sure it'll pass.

[Or, y'know, not, but he's not gonna talk about that.]

Ah- no, that's not... I'm being honest, I promise. I really have just been finding it difficult to fall asleep these last couple of days.

[Coincidentally the same day the truth came out and he had to track Kid's ass out onto the Skyway.]

[I'unno man he's a tough son of a bitch. He's probably chilling on some piece of Gehenna out there, just waiting.

[She's letting you off the hook. For now.]

[Zulf gives a sigh.]

It's just been... a trying few days. I suppose that might explain it. I thought I would be more tired after that Skyway visit, funnily enough.

Well... it was a pretty heavy thing that went on... I wasn't exactly feelin' great after it either.

[Which Zulf was there for. As were several others later. Rin hadn't cried that much since she'd lost Kuro...]

Just try to get some rest soon, okay?

I'm not sure I understand what you're working towards. As soon as I can, I'm heading back out there to look for survivors.

[She's really still hoping to find someone she knows. She had the help of a dragon getting here, so it makes sense that she'd be the first one. There could still be others.]

I don't want to be at my worst when Colin starts the expedition to return to the Observatory.

[Rin starts to say something, but she closes her mouth a second later. She's not going to bring up the statutes, or the pin she hides on a thin leather strap around her neck and beneath her shirt. This person might not believe her anyway...

Instead she shifts on her feet a bit, before answering.]

Just... surviving. That's it. We're lookin' for things called Cores, they give power to this place. Enough of 'em, we might not even need to hunt around for supplies anymore.

[She lets out a sigh, kicking a foot at the wood of the gazebo gently.]

What else can we do? If we give up now then everythin' we've done will be for nothin'.
