just a puppet on a lonely string || Day 142
Who: AZ and anyone who wanders past
Open: Open
When: 142
Where: Near the monument
What: An old man takes some time to doodle. Don't judge.Or do.
Format: Whatever
Warnings: None
[Some days are made for being lazy. AZ is taking advantage of one of those days right now. The giant man is sitting next to the monument, some paper sitting both nearby and on his knee. He has a piece of charcoal in his hand, held carefully so as to not lose it. With great care, he starts sketching on the paper.]
[A few finished sketches sit nearby, depicting the Bastion with people around it. He's good enough that it's not hard to tell who's who, though the features might be smudged a bit. Some are people he's spoken to, but given how quiet and solitary he usually is, most are just of people he's seen.]

The routes almost all have their own unique names, and there's architecture in Kalos you can't find anywhere else. There's a few palaces in the region, for example, that show off the best of Kalosian architecture... and the art museum in Luminose collects art from around the region as well as around the world.
[... Oh. He's babbling a little. He lowers his voice a bit.]
... It also has its legends, and people who would use Pokemon for evil purposes. But it also has brave young people willing to stand up to those sorts of people.
no subject
That's good. Pokemon should be treated as our friends, and as our partners ...
[ She knows that there are people like that. She'd fought against more than her share of them in the past. And then there was Ghetsis ...
Hilda still doesn't think that she did anything especially heroic. She just stood up to a man who had a very skewed way of thinking. She didn't actually show him anything different. She just defeated him in battle. There were people who could be shown that Pokemon were far more than just tools for battle and world domination, but then there were people who likely would never understand that.
And it sucked. It really did. She knew everyone had their own views on everything, not just Pokemon, but when someone's view was going to hurt another party ... ]
I am curious about the Legends of the Kalos Region, if you would be willing to talk about that sometime.
General spoiler warning for X/Y plot doop de doo.
A terribly long time ago... there was a man and a Pokemon. He loved that Pokemon very much. A war began. The man's beloved Pokemon took part in the war, because he was the king and so he had to sacrifice for the good of the country. Several years passed.
He... was given a tiny box. The man wanted to bring the Pokemon back. No matter what it took. The man built a machine to give it life. Using it required the life force of many Pokemon, and so he used a Pokemon who stole the life force from beings around it in order to power the machine.
... But he brought his beloved Pokemon back. Even still... the man had suffered too much. His rage had not subsided. He could not forgive the world that had hurt the Pokemon he loved. He turned the machine into the ultimate weapon. The man became a bringer of destruction that ended the war, decimating both sides.
The Pokemon that was given life must have known... that the lives of many Pokemon were taken to restore its life. The resurrected eternal Pokemon left the man's side. The man was surprised and sad. He had revived it so they could be together...
Day after day passed, but they were never to meet. Eventually, he became a mere shell of a man. A man condemned to wander forever by the light of the weapon... and a Pokemon that also wanders eternally...

This next question might sound familiar to him ... ]
So the Man and the Pokemon still wandering? Is there any more to the legend?
no subject
But the man traveled for a long time. Eventually, one of his descendants found him, and took the key he held to the weapon. He wanted to destroy, so that life had room to grow. But while his heart was in the right place, his actions were terribly wrong. A boy and a girl - very much like you - took their friends and defeated the descendant.
They freed the wanderer, and showed him what true bonds of friendship were. The Pokemon saw this, and returned to the man, after all those years.
[Floette sways a little on her flower.]
Flo flo...

A smile grew on her face as she listened to the rest of the tale. ]
I'm really glad it has a happy ending, Mr. AZ.

[He pulls his knees up a little bit, smiling a tiny bit.]
Even... here, where there's a lot of destruction... I think that maybe we can help. This place keeps growing. Maybe we'll be able to find a way to fix things.
no subject
Yeah, I've noticed that. A lot of the people here seem to be doing what they can to help improve things around here.
[ There is definitely a smile remaining here. ]
It's really nice to see it, too. When even the non-native people who come to this place do what they can to improve things, It makes me want to help out where I can even more.
[ It's understandably difficult to move on after knowing your home is destroyed ... but at least her world--
...
And this is about the time she realizes that AZ's appearance is giving her the answer she didn't have before about her own world's fate. Coming here from Vatheon, she knew that Vatheon must have been destroyed in the Calamity, but she hadn't been sure about what had happened to her own home world. But now ...
She knew, It must have been destroyed, too ...
Her smile falls and her gaze moves to the ground below them. She had already dealt with this grief once, and she had known even then that there was a chance of this ... but it didn't make the realization any less painful. ]
no subject
... Are you all right?
no subject
You're from Kalos ... even from a different region, you're from my world.
[ AZ needed an explanation, and she needed to find the words to give that explanation. She's quiet for another few moments before she speaks again. ]
When N and I arrived here, we didn't come straight from Unova. There was a world named Vatheon. There were scientists running the city as an experiment, providing us with everything we needed within reason, and despite some interesting events, we were able to call that place a temporary home. Unfortunately, the scientists still saw us as experiments, and when they got the information they needed, they decided to end it.
By which I mean, eradicate everyone.
We were able to know what they were planning in enough time to do something about it, though, and we were successful. Afterwards we were given the option to either stay and live our lives on the island, or to go back to our own homes. N and I were going to go back to Unova, and we promised we would find each other again once we were there.
We didn't make it back there, though. Instead, we were brought here.
[ And she'd gone through the transporter windshield and had a lot of physical damage, but she'll conveniently leave that part out. ]
When we were told what this place was, and why we were here, we had assumed that the Calamity had taken Vatheon ... but we still didn't know about our own world. We thought there was hope for our world, at least.
[ Her hands ball into fists and she tries very hard to keep the tears welling in her eyes from falling. It doesn't work. She's trembling, trying to keep all of that emotion inside. ]
Reshiram and Zekrom weren't with us when we landed here, too ... so we thought ... f-for sure, we thought they had made it home, and it was safe for them at home ...
[ Hilda found she couldn't say anything more after that. Those tears she tried so hard to hold back were now rolling down her cheeks, droplets of water plopping onto the ground in front of her. ]

... They're strong, from what I know about them. They'll be all right. They've survived a lot before. It's likely they're out there somewhere.
[He's... honestly not sure how much of that he believes himself, but it's what she needs to hear.]
no subject
[ Hilda found her voice again, but only long enough to ask that. She was trying really hard to reel in her emotions, not wanting to break down completely in front of AZ. Lilil made her way over to her trainer and hugged her as tightly as she could. ]
gant ...
[ She was sad, too ... ]
no subject
[Floette follows Lilil, looking worried. AZ looks a bit lost, trying to figure out what to do. After a few moments, he pulls her into a gentle hug. This is what you do to comfort someone, right? It's been a long time since he's dealt with this.]
no subject
When AZ pulled her into a hug, she buried her face into him and wrapped her arms around him tightly. She didn't care that she had only just met this man. He was offering her comfort when she needed that. Badly.
Lilil took to rubbing her trainer's back gently, trying to comfort her as well. ]

Hush, now child, and don't you cry
The Hoothoot will sing you a lullaby
The world will keep you all safe and warm
Until you wake up to greet the new morn
Hush, now child, and drift off to sleep
Lie down like the Skiddo and don't make a peep
The world will protect you, safe and sound
Until you wake up tomorrow with friends all around
no subject
Good job, papa AZ. Lilil is grateful to you for helping her trainer.
Even if you're large and smelly.]no subject
Things will turn out all right.
[At least that's what he's telling himself.]

Hilda almost wanted to scold herself for reacting so badly to this realization. She, who had faced dangers, gone up against an entire organization and won, befriended and even fell in love with the man who had been their "King," seen more than one region, more than one world ... she, who had been through so much, was a complete blubbering mess right now.
But then, she realized, even the strongest of people would fall to pieces if they learned that almost everything they knew and loved was just .. gone.
Hilda didn't consider herself to be very strong at all. She didn't consider herself heroic, even though she had been praised and raised to the level of a hero many times already in her young life. She didn't think she was anything more than just a fourteen year old girl with a love and passion for Pokemon and a knack for battling with and training them.
So then ... it was okay for her to cry.
Wasn't it?
It was, right? ]

Until N left, that was.
When he left, she had sunk to her knees and cried like a baby at the giant, gaping hole in the wall where he had left on Zekrom. And then she had passed out right there, after she'd cried for all of the things she'd experienced, all the battles fought, all of the things she'd been caught up in for the past however long.
No one told her it was okay to cry back then. All they'd told her was that she was this heroic person.
Even though he was silent, though, AZ's actions and the way he was handling this was telling her right now that it was okay.
Even though she was trying hard not to cry right now, she appreciated the fact that he was telling her that. ]

[He'd wanted to say something to the ones who had saved them, wanted to reassure them that things would be all right. To tell them how thankful he was that they had helped him, but he didn't have the words. He'd requested a battle, in front of everyone, to show how he felt through his Pokemon - and then Floette had come back.]
[He couldn't say anything that felt right, so he had left with her. But he still felt like he had to express how he felt somehow.]
[And now there was no chance to do it. But to support another Trainer, one who had done so much and yet was still so young - this he could do. He'd never had children of his own, and he'd never really known his brother's children, but he'd seen families grow up and how they acted. He only hopes he's doing the right thing.]
[He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a handkerchief - though it's really more like a towel - and holds it out for her.]
no subject
towelhandkerchief and slowly reaches out to take it from him. ]T-Thank you ...
[ Her voice is quiet, and partway muffled due to stuffing her face into the handkerchief to try and wipe away the tears that were still falling despite her calming down. They probably wouldn't stop completely for a while ... ]
no subject
[He keeps a hand on her back, gently holding her. He's here. It's okay.]
no subject
But it still felt like it wasn't.
The realization that everything she had known back home was gone had hit her hard, and it was difficult to keep an optimistic outlook in the face of that ... she knew, somewhere in the back of her mind, that she would be okay. She would move on. She'd keep living, because that was all she could do now.
Right now, though, she felt none of that. She felt hopeless. Incomplete. Blank.
It was hard to exist right now, even with the support of a man she had only just met. ]
no subject
[Still, he had to try. He had to be there.]
I'm sorry. But... at least you're safe. You and N. And who knows? Maybe we'll find others, further out.
