Day 63 :: Action [Closed]

What: Night arrives and finds herself confused and lost.
Format: Action log.
Warnings: Cursing and general sadness?

[After waking up to the charred remains of Monaka's home and then attempting to calm herself down from going into a panic over where is Monaka, where is she, is she safe oh God please let her be safe-- Night set out to search for her beloved friend and hopefully the reason for this unknown disaster.

Needless to say neither questions were answered.

Under normal circumstances she would be aided by her incredible and reliable sense of smell, but the overpowering scent of burnt flesh and ash clouded her head and threw her off any possible trail back to Monaka.]

Hello? Monaka? Monaka!

[Just as she steps over a fallen door her foot slips and suddenly she's staring over a piece of rock into a dark abyss, debris falling away into nothing. It happens so quickly that she jumps back and lets out a surprised yelp.]

Wh- What is going on?! Where am I?!

Eh--... ?

Some twists and turns up from where Night was, two teenagers were making their way down the Skyway, picking off a small scattering of enemies in a hunt for shards. It had been a slow day though, the Peckers seeming a bit sparser than usual. They had only taken out five between the two of them, and had already been out for over an hour. They didn't even have any supplies to show for their trouble.

But as they neared a small courtyard-like area, Rin stopped digging through a barrel that she had paused at and looked up, blinking a few times.]

... did you hear that, Bon?

[Bon was a bit behind Rin, keeping an eye out behind them as they made their way through the Skyway. It really was uneventful for the most part, and it was almost disappointing how they hadn't come across anything of note yet.

Bon was still hoping to find his friends, though he grew more disappointed with each passing day.

He hadn't actually heard Night the first time, but when Rin stopped and asked about it he listened in closer to try to hear it.]

What is it?

I heard a voice.

[Straightening, Rin pointed down the way to the area she heard it coming from. It was just far enough away that visibility wasn't great, but something was definitely moving over there.]

A survivor... ?

[Rubbing her nose with hopes it might restore her sense of smell, Night moves far away from the sudden pit hole into nothing. Had she landed in some crack between Assiah and Gehanna? If so, why was Monaka's house here? Or well at least some of it.

Now a little more careful she starts moving again, hopefully in the right direction.] Monaka? Monaka if you can hear me, say something!

[Bon couldn't make out what she was saying, but he could hear her shouts now.]

It looks like it. C'mon, let's go over there and get them.

[He might be a little anxious to go check because it could be someone from their world. Bon definitely sees long black hair, so possibly Izumo?]

[Izumo or Yuki, is what Rin is thinking, but she's desperately trying not to get her hopes up.

She nods, hefting her closed sword over one shoulder as she started down the Skyway.]

Looks pretty clear over there. Hopefully we can get 'em back safely.

[She doesn't have to face their direction to suddenly get a whiff of a very familiar scent.

So there were demons here. Maybe this was her answer, although the results were probably not what she wanted.

She shifts the red sword bag slung over one shoulder closer for better ease of access, just in case as she turns towards her approaching company.

One of them is demon. Slightly. Half-breed? They looked like kids. Once they get closer Night flashes them a fangy smile.]

You two look like you can give me some answers about this mess, yeah?

[As they got closer, Bon became aware of a very important fact: this new person looked a lot like Rin. In fact, she looked so much like Rin that she could pass for Rin's older sister, or even Rin ten years from now.

Realizing this made him stop in his tracks and stare.]

...Okumura. How many of your older sisters have you met?

[He's trying to say it quietly enough that only Rin can hear, but whoops not accounting for demon hearing.

Also he's not answering Night yet, Rin can do that.]

[Rin didn't notice the appearance first so much as she noticed the distinct feeling in her chest that said 'there's a demon here'. Which... was interesting and slightly disconcerting at first, because there was no knowing what kind of demon this one was. They could be willing to work for the greater good just because there was no one else was there, or say fuck it and cause more trouble for that same reason.

She was actually getting ready to answer Night's question even, too preoccupied with those other thoughts to notice the similarities at first, but when Bon whispered and asked that question Rin, too, stopped.

And stared.

And stared a lot.

And in the end the only thing she could get out was:]

EHHHHHHHHHHHHHH?!

[Yup. Subtle.]

[Of course she heard that shit, Bon. Of course she did. Sister? What a stupid question. Night didn't hear about any of her siblings following her footsteps and besides- their scents were completely different!]

Don't be stupid, of course we aren't siblings! Now are you gonna keep on gawking there or are you gonna answer my question?

[Her tone was a little clipped, impatience kicking in. Monaka was somewhere here, lost, and she was stuck here with two brats having some sort of crisis. Night crosses her arms over her chest, exorcist coat wrinkling slightly.] I don't have all day.

[Okay, yeah, Night can't possibly be another one of Satan's kids. For one, none of them are exorcists except for Rin (and Mephisto apparently, but Bon is still unsure of that), and secondly they certainly wouldn't be just standing here talking like this.

But still, the resemblance is uncanny. Even if it's a coincidence, it is one hell of one.]

We don't have time for a long explanation, but basically someone blew up the world and this is what's left of it.

[There's no need to get into the multiple-worlds thing until they're back in the safety of the Bastion.

That's also when Bon notices the coat.]

Are you an exorcist?

I think this week is tryin' to kill me, Bon...

[Rin let it out in a quiet mutter, though chances were the new arrival was going to be able to hear that, too. Okay, so it wasn't a sibling but it was most certainly another demon, and an exorcist to boot. ... weird. But if what Izumo had told her on the train to Kyoto had any clout, it was more common than she originally knew.

Or.

Had been.

Their worlds were kind of gone.]

Y... yeah. We can explain more later, but there's a place where survivors are gatherin' and the sooner we get there the better.

[It hits her slowly, sinking in like a poison and sending goosebumps along her skin.]

What?

[A lump grows in her throat and she can feel the panic begin to swell again in the pit of her stomach, rising up and threatening to overtake her.

She takes a step back, starting to turn away.]

I- I need to find Monaka! She was in this house, just like me so- so she has to be here somewhere! When I find her we'll both come back! [She wouldn't leave without her.]

[Bon holds out a hand to stop Night before she can start running.]

You're not going to be much help to anyone until you get the supplies you need to go looking.

[With his other hand, he reaches down to his neck and pulls a small chain out from his shirt, showing off one of the amulets everyone gets.]

Without one of these, the ground might fall right out from under you. You can't find this Monaka person if you're dead.

[Bon grabbed Night before Rin could, which was probably for the best because Rin was very much of the 'if they don't follow willingly, drag them back physically' mind set around here. No one else was going to die on her watch, god damn it.]

We'll help you look for your friend, just let us get you back first.

[She hadn't heard anything yet, but her ears were tuned in to the broken world around them, just waiting for the sound of something that would take pleasure in chewing their faces off.]

She's the one that needs saving, not me! [She snaps at Bon when he grabs at her arm, nearly yanking away from him. Her eyes flash dangerously before she manages to compose herself - just barely.]

Amulet or no amulet, I can take care of myself just fine. All that matters is that I find her first. She has no way of defending herself out here! [She refused to believe Monaka wasn't out here somewhere and her panic only tripled at the idea that she could just as easily fall through some hole like she almost did.

She looks between Bon and Rin.] It's my job to protect her. My own safety comes second to that.

[Yeah no he's not afraid of Night at all. He keeps his cool as he tries once more to reason with her.]

And what are you going to do when you get surrounded by monsters? Or if you actually find her, but you can't rescue her because you don't have the things you need to get the Skyway to do what you want?

I'm not saying you have to stop looking entirely, Okumura and I are still looking for our friends too. But you need to go with a group, and you need to hear all about what's happened.

[They weren't going to get much longer to talk about it, or even think about it. While Bon put up his argument against Night's insistence that she find her friend, Rin's ears picked up something over their voices.]

... Bon. We gotta go. We gotta go now.

[If this were any other situation she would have found the boy's bravery admirable, but right now she only found it annoying.

... Yet he makes a valid point, even if she didn't want to admit to it. Somewhere there was Monaka, possibly in danger so of course she couldn't just leave so easily!]

Monsters? [Tch, like that worried her.

Her ears rang at the same sounds Rin heard and she perked up in that direction. Strangely, the usual scent of demons didn't reach her like she expected it to. Her surprise is evident when she realizes this.]

They aren't demons...? [Pulling her arm from Bon's grip she moves to pull out her sword from the case over her shoulder.] What sort of creatures are these?

[Bon lets go of Night anyway as soon as he hears tha tone in Rin's voice. Bon has long since learned to trust Rin in this matter, she can hear and smell monsters coming long before anyone else can.

Also he doesn't really know how to describe them for Night, so.]

You'll find out soon enough.

[And then to Rin, as he unholsters one of his guns.]

What kind?

[Rin pulls her sword out from it's case on her back, closing her eyes and letting out a breath, focusing her attention on what she was hearing.]

Squirts. A lot of 'em. We're gonna get swarmed.

[Her sword is already out, ready to be unsheathed. Never had she ever encountered this type of creature and thus a thousand more questions arose in her mind, but went unvoiced for now. This wasn't the time for explanations.]

So long as these things slice as easily as demons do I think we'll be fine...! [The swarm was approaching quickly, ringing loudly in her ears. Unsheathing her sword her entire appearance changes into something much more demonic. Fangs enlarged, with white horns and furry black ears protruding from her head and a long, black tail lit aflame curled behind her, the only thing distinguishing her from any other possessed human was the exorcist coat she wore. Hopefully these kids wouldn't be too distracted by her change in style.]

[Bon was about to answer that, but then Night became more demon-like and holy shit there's even more similarities between them.

He almost freaks out for a moment there, distinctly taking a step or two back from Night when she changes, but he doesn't have much time to be distracted by it because oh look there's the Squirts!

Rin wasn't kidding either, there are a lot of them. Way more than what usually travel in one group. And while it wasn't a huge mob rushing all at once, the trickle of Squirts coming down the Skyway just doesn't seem to stop.]

[Rin was far less shocked. She had expected something like this. Demon slaying sword? Demonic nature? Yup. Transformations like that were pretty par the course. If anything she was only noting that this one seemed to have a lot more in the way of physical change than she did... but of course she was only half.

Rin followed suit with a similar motion for removing her sword, blue flames and elongated ears coming along with it. That was way more than she was even expecting - their numbers enough that even her advanced senses couldn't get a proper read until they were streaming in.]

Fuck-- Bon, find cover and start shootin'!

[It's when she sees the blue flames that she actually stops longer than a second to stare. Too many things happen at once and she isn't allowed the luxury to mull over the reason behind this girl's strange color choice in flames.

Especially when a squirt tries to fly at her face. In impulse she slices it in half with her blade and starts to go to town on the ones surrounding her.]

[Yeah, he's jumping back and over to some cover. But instead of hiding behind it, he gets on top of it and shoots down at the Squirts.

He'll aim for the ones that are further away, to try to pick off some before they get close to Rin and Night. He can't get all of them, but he can make it easier.]

[They're obviously going to have a lot to talk about when they get back, but for now Rin's focus is the same as everyone else - knock down the Squirts as fast as they can so they don't get overwhelmed.

She would rather Bon take cover, on the off chance that a Gasfella or something bigger shows up, but she won't argue against the additional support. Her flames can go pretty far, but not as far out as they're coming from.

Several go down near her, either by flame or by blade, but one dodges her attack and zips by just close enough that she nearly stumbles.]

Shit... ! Bastards!

[Out of the blue that lucky squirt suddenly goes up in flames, a small bonfire before Night goes back to focusing on her own horde of squirts.]

Better watch out! [Despite the situation, Night was grinning. This at least served as a good way to let off her frustrations over the situation and Monaka's disappearance. It was only in fights where she could let loose on her opponents while having to keep a lip tight control over her urges the rest of the time.

Her flames engulf a few handful near her, mindful of where Bon and Rin stood to keep the bulk of the swarms off of them. No matter what it was still her duty to protect them and she'd see that to the end.]

[They're taking out the Squirts, but for some reason they just keep coming. There can't be that many hiding, they just keep coming and coming and that isn't normal at all.

Eventually Bon starts to get low on ammunition, and that means it's time to call it quits.]

Just clear out that group there, we need to get back to the Bastion!

[The monsters won't follow them there, at least.]

[Giving up like that sucks, but there's no way only three of them can take out what's coming if the numbers just keep stacking up the way they are. Rin wants to know why but she's not about to kill herself in order to find out.

The only problem is this demon with them is... stubborn, to say the least, and Rin is cocnerned she's not going to listen.

Rin jumps back and skids shortly after a group of five nearly latch on to her face, two of them zipping by close enough to take slices out of her right arm. It stings like a bitch but she's dealt with worse.]

Come on! They ain't gonna let up! We can look for your friend later!

Tch-! [If they stayed any longer it would only be her left fighting, making these two liabilities. If she told them to leave without her, judging by their attitudes before they might not leave so easily.

Damn these kids.

Gritting her teeth and biting back the words she wished she could scream at them, Night turned away from the squirts to retreat. Her chest constricted as she ran farther from the horde, the image of Monaka somewhere out there without her protection gripping at her heart.

I'm so sorry, Monaka...]

[Bon fires off his last few rounds to give the pair some cover as they run, and once they pass him he'll start running too.

Fortunately the path to the Bastion isn't too far away, so they can book it there before they're overtaken by Squirts.]

[Rin slices one last one and turns, bolting at breakneck speed, stumbling to a halt as soon as they're back in the Bastion. She comes to a stop shortly after, resting hands on knees not because she's out of breath but because she's relieved they made it.

Damn Squirts...]

[The moment they arrive in the Bastion Night sheathes her sword, demonic traits disappearing instantly. She grips the covered blade in both hands, trembling with suppressed emotions that threatened to burst at any moment. How could she breathe deeply and relax now, even if they had escaped those monsters? How could she even think to do such things when Monaka was still out there?

In one swift motion she has Rin harshly shoved up against a stone wall, nails clutching the front of her shirt. Her eyes burned and fangs bared at the halfbred girl before her.]

Tell me what is going on now!

[Don't forget about the human boy! He's not anywhere on their level, but he's still very insistent on the fact that Night should not be throwing anyone around like that.]

Hey! Let go of her now!

[He's got his gun pointed at her, even though it's not going to do much of anything. The bullets are effective against monsters, not demons.]

[The only reason Rin shrieked was because she really, really was not expecting to be grabbed and slammed against a wall. Their raised voices brought a few curious, worried faces out from various places around the Bastion, but so far no one was approaching to break up the fight, leaving it to Bon and his ill-effective gun. Rin was small, not light exactly but not heavy enough to be a hindrance to a full demon like Night, and her feet were dangling off the ground, sword dropped in her surprise and too far away to be of any use to her.

But that didn't stop her from instantly flaring up, blue flames burning once more as she snarled, grasping Night's hand in an effort to pull it away from her collar.]

Put me th' fuck down.

[She pays Bon no mind, only sparing him a second glance before focusing her barely composed fury back on Rin. The blue flames tickled her skin, burning, but she didn't care. She's felt worse and at the moment her adrenaline kept her from letting it bother her.]

Not until you give me answers! Tell me everything!

[Whoops sorry girls, no fighting allowed! The Bastion does not appreciate that.

So here, have some good vibe waves. Everyone can be friends now, we can all get along~ Let's all hold hands~

Also Bon will get hit with the Good Feelings too, since he's right there with them.]

[Whoa... that was... weird. She feels kind of wobbly but in a fun way, and her flames slowly recede and extinguish. She really doesn't feel like yelling anymore, even though at the moment she's still being held up.]

... can I be put down now please?

[She asked nicely. Clearly the world is ending.]

Ah... [She felt deflated, like the air being sucked out of a balloon slowly. She blinks once before carefully setting Rin back down, mind in a haze.]

Sorry... [What was going on? Night looks down at her hands, studying them, before looking back up at Rin then at Bon.]

What's going on?

[Well hey, this turned out better than expected.

Bon is also dropping his gun. His arms feel heavy and pointing guns at things just feels so wrong.]

I have no idea.

[He looks to Rin for answers. She's been here the longest so surely she knows.]

[No one has actually had a fight that bad in the Bastion before, so she's just as clueless as they were. She shrugs, picking her sword back up and placing it in it's case.]

I'unno. ... we just got back, right? I guess we gotta give the newbie a proper introduction?

Oi... [That 'newbie' bit makes her frown, but she says nothing more on it.]

Start from the beginning. Where am I?

[The Good Feeling vibes are going away now, since everyone is calmed down and not fighting anymore, but that was still one hell of a distraction there.]

You're in the Bastion. It's basically a safe place, no monsters will ever come in here. Basically anyone who survived the end of the world is either here or will be here eventually.

[Don't you 'Oi' her. Everyone gets the newbie treatment for a while.]

And no, we don't know what happened, we just know that a lot of worlds just...

[She makes a noise, and even moves her hands to indicate 'exploded']</small?

... What? [There was that familiar feeling of panic again. Her stomach twisted uneasily.] What do you mean by the end of the world? Everything was just fine not even a little while ago!

[But that brings another thought to mind.] Even if it was possible, how do you- how do we know who survived? [Monaka-] I mean surely there are others still up there right?

Well yeah, of course there are. Why do you think we were out looking for people?

It just happened, so there's survivors everywhere. If you haven't found a statue of them, then they could still be alive.

We're still lookin' and we're gonna keep lookin', so if there's some one you know out there we'll do what we can to find 'em.

But... first we need to get you an an amulet so you don't fall off the Skyway.
