[Naturally if she's going to be at the forge, she'll be working around Stewart. He's not one for a lot of conversation, but he figures that suits a work-minded person like Zuko.

She's learning well, though, and that's something he's admittedly proud of. So many of these kids are doing everything in their power to help this place, and keep everyone safe. He respected that.]

You're progressing well.

[Zuko is pretty comfortable around Stewart, generally. It's easier not having to make conversation.

She's not entirely used to praise, though.]

I have a ways to go.

[He's noticed that, which is why he continues to be encouraging.]

You'll have to give yourself credit for a job well done eventually. This isn't an easy trade to learn, but you've taken to it well.

[Some part of Zuko is trying to figure out how to deny that, but if he's the experienced blacksmith and she's still learning, then his assessment is the one with actual weight.

Which means she's doing a good job?]

...I'll keep at it then.

[She would have attributed it to his teaching but that wouldn't be giving herself credit so she.. can't do that?? Maybe she should attempt to change the topic to make sure he can't keep confusing her with how well she's doing.]

I haven't asked. How's Anna doing after the other week?

[Exactly, Zuko.

At least you're willing to recognize that.

Stewart lets out a grunt, placing some of his tools back on the shelves where they belong.]

Poor child is still convinced there's gotta be some way to keep people from vanishing... but more than that I think she's just glad she didn't get in too much trouble for what she was doing.

Her heart was in the right place, and no one got hurt. It's not something you punish a kid for.

It was, yes. And no, I wouldn't have, even if some one did by chance get hurt. She's a child, she really didn't know any better.

[He can't say he's happy with Zahi for putting the idea in her head, though.]

...yeah.

[Zuko agrees wholeheartedly, but she's still a little surprised to hear a father say something like that. It's a reminder that some people actually do have good ones.]

Has she said anything else about it? I don't mean to push. The whole thing just still feels off somehow.

[He hopes he's a good one. Since the Calamity he hasn't been so sure. It's not exactly raising a child after all that.]

Not much at all, no. Just that she doesn't want anyone else to leave...

Zahi put the idea in her head, to get rid of the compasses, but that's hardly her fault any more than her actually going through with it with actual good intentions.

Samuel, too, but he's just a kid himself. Zahi should have just explained things honestly.

Should've. Didn't. And now we've got a bigger mess on our hands for it.

I can't say I understand at all what the man was thinking. He's a father himself, and yet...

Well, having children doesn't mean you're any good with them.

His daughter seems like a perfectly fine woman to me. That should speak to his ability as a father.

[Though it's clear he might be doubting that now.]

It might just say more about the rest of her family.

I suppose. I'm not about to get all intrusive on her family past, though.

Me neither.

And Zahi's probably not that bad.

It's just frustrating. I thought the only person I had to worry about trusting here was my sister.

Hey now, let's not jump to conclusions. I never said Zahi wasn't some one we could trust.

Well... maybe not trust his decision making process as much now.

I- I was trying to say I didn't think it was him.

It just makes you a little suspicious of everyone.

Hmn. I suppose I can see that. Tensions have been high enough around here as it is.

Yeah.

I think we'll get through it, though. We always do, right?

We've survived this long, that's for sure. There were doubts at the start but I really am impressed with how everyone has pulled together.

[daughterofursa]

Well, we're all in this together. There shouldn't be any reason not to support each other.

[Unless you're an incorrigible asshole like Colin, but she's pretty sure he's not trying to betray anyone.]

[Asshole, yes, but he's an asshole that's firmly on their side.]

Not everyone would see it that way. If our numbers were larger that very could have been a problem. In that, we lucked out. It's more difficult to make large populations all agree to the same ideal.
