[N was hardly a social creature. By nature and habit he really did keep to himself, and that had been even more the case following that awful trip to the Skyway. As soon as Hilda was out of the hospital and back home it was almost as if the green-haired teen had all but vanished.

And yet something had been on his mind, so much so that he finally did venture out of the Pokemon Daycare with Zoroark at his heels in a strange display of actual human interaction with the other residents of the Bastion.

Why?

Well. Even N knew that not everything you needed to know about something could be solely learned from a book and nothing else.

With that, he took to others who would hopefully know more than he did, starting the awkward conversation with a single question:]

What do you know about... marriage?

Why are you asking me?

[And is this really the time to be talking about marriage, they're preparing for a probable attack??]

[N sees it as the perfect time to. Given how many times N and Hilda both have almost died he's beginning to think it might be time to do something important before one of them really does kick the bucket.]

I'm asking everyone.

[She'd probably understand that if it were explained to her, but Zuko just gets very focused on accomplishing goals.]

Well- what is there to know? It's marriage.

[Since when has anything N done ever made sense? Even Hilda questions his sanity sometimes.]

I understand the text-book definition of it. Even the origins of it from many different worlds at this point, including my own.

But I feel that there has to be more to it than what I've read.

People get married for different reasons.

But I guess it's supposed to be a commitment to spend the rest of your life with someone.

I see. That does make sense.

[A pause, then another question:]

What would your own personal reasons for participating in such a ceremony be?

Uh-

Well...

[Now that arranged marriage is off the table and she's openly dating a girl, her personal views on the matter can't be the same anymore. She just hasn't given it a ton of thought.]

If I were in love... and wanted to make her a part of my family. I think that's when I'd consider it.

[Her?

Oh. Right. That was in the books as well. Not every place was as accepting of it as others were, though he did recall vaguely that Unova as a whole appeared to be fairly open to the idea.

What was it that others said sometimes? Love is love?

Something like that.

Perhaps that's why Hilda was perfectly fine with how he was regardless of his inability to be affectionate with her...]

Ah-- ... that's right, family is involved in some way...

[Why does that bother him... ?]

...most of ours can't be anymore.

[And she is very iffy on the idea of Azula at her wedding.]

It's more about building family. I used to think about children, but... well... [how]

Building family...

[That seems to pull him away from his more negative thoughts regarding family. Ghetsis was a terrible father. That isn't the sort of family he would want to bring Hilda in to.

Making his own family, on the other hand...]

Isn't... adoption a possibility?

...

I hadn't thought of that.

[Although now that he's brought it up, the idea of orphans in this world is really sad. ~~She will have to adopt any and all of them that there are so it is not sad anymore.~~]

[Best plan, clearly.]

There are many ways to make a family, isn't there? I hadn't known that before I came here... but I'm starting to learn.

[She's used to other people's blood families looking a lot healthier than her own, but..]

Yeah.

I mean, I was sort of adopted by my uncle.

"Sort of"?

[That's an odd qualifier. N looks curious, wondering if Zuko will elaborate.]

It wasn't official or anything.

But he was the one who was there to support me.

Ah... that makes sense. AZ seems to be doing the same with Hilda.

She's another pokemon trainer, right?

[Zuko hasn't really talked to her.]

[A nod.]

We run the daycare together, with AZ's help.

That must be a lot of work.

Do you have everything you need?

[Of course Zuko's mind goes to attack preparations and not to, say, wondering if Hilda is the reason he's asking about marriage.]

We've been doing alright. A lot of the Pokemon hatched here are getting strong enough to fend for themselves.

[They might be vulnerable to attack, though, even with creatures basically made for fighting.]

I know they grow up pretty fast, but I'd rather defend them than expect them to fight for themselves.

Zoroark is more than capable of holding his own.

[As is Hilda's team.

The rest, though...]

He's just one of them.

Hilda has an entire team.

Still.

I'd rather they be a last line of defense. One that hopefully doesn't have to fight.
