[Even with his lack of knowledge about the subject Rob knows this can't be as easy as Shing makes it look. Checking that his knife is indeed firmly attached to the stick, he picks out a distinctive-looking stone in the water and pokes it with his spear. As expected he misses it entirely, but it gives him a decent idea about how much the water displaces the image. After a few more pokes of other submerged stones he feels like he has a reasonable handle on how to adjust his aim and starts looking for a fish. He's not even going to try throwing it.

He soon finds one and watches it for a bit, lining up the strike and trying to get a sense of where the fish is going. When he thinks he has it right, he stabs into the water.

The fish is long gone and he wasn't able to catch how close he was to a good strike. He pulls the spear back with a frown and starts looking for another fish.]
