Day 229 [EVENT]: Search the Skyway

What: The Bastion needs a core. Badly. So what better place would there be to search than the place cores were mined from before the Calamity?

[After a few days of rest and organization, Nathaniel and Zahi finally lead a good portion of the Bastion residents to the quarry to look for a core. Fortunately, it doesn't take long to reach the quarry, thanks to the extended reach of the Skyway. Unfortunately, the quarry is very large, which means that everyone has to split up into small groups to cover more ground. But is the risk worth it for the reward?]

Due to the nature of this post, there will be several threads happening at once. When your group is ready for some more NPC/setting interaction, put a note in the subject line of your comment, and a mod will jump in to further the thread.

Also, several groups can be at one location within the quarry, but each group will still have their own thread in that location.

[The only truly 'safe' place within the quarry, this is where Nathaniel and Zahi can be found.]

[This is the open area outside of the mine itself. It is connected pretty well for being on the Skyway, and there is quite a bit to explore. However, since it is out in the open, most of the good stuff has been long-since picked over.

A few ash statues remain, and a wandering gasfella or two can be found. Otherwise, it will be smooth sailing here.]

[This is the office of the foreman. It probably won't yield a core, but there might be interesting, plot-related trinkets within.]

[Back when the quarry was active, many miners worked here. Naturally, they needed a place to stay. These small, one-bedroom apartments (not unlike the apartments back at the Bastion, actually) aren't very nice, but they suit their purpose.

This area will most likely be full of the miner's personal effects.]

[All of those shards and cores had to be stored somewhere before being shipped out, and it just so happens that a large warehouse served that purpose.

There is not much of a threat from any monsters here currently, since the doors are tightly locked and the building is sturdy. However, some Peckers are perched nearby, and they'll be watching whoever tries to go in.]

[Eventually walkways give way to minecart trails, and the snaking paths of the Skyway start to head downwards. This way leads into the mine itself.

Be warned, this is where it starts to get dangerous. A new breed of monster, the Rattle-tail lives here. And since the underground paths of the quarry have been brought out to the surface, the Rattle-tails are now free to move about, shaking their rattling tails as they go.

Be careful, they summon meteors. Small meteors, mind you, but it will still hurt when they hit.]

[This was once the main tunnel going into the mine. dozens of smaller tunnels branch off from it at various locations, leading to pathways that once housed cores.

Shards are plentiful here, but so are monsters. In addition to the Rattle-tails, Pincushions are present, hidden in the dark corners where part of the roof has not yet caved in. The Pincushions could skewer you if you don't step carefully.]

[While most of the mine has been exposed to the sky in the Calamity, a few branches still remain covered. These tunnels go deep into the rock, and are full of pitfalls and Pincusions. If you choose one of these paths, step lightly, and bring a light source.]

[This tunnel is like the other branch tunnels, which were not torn apart and left open to the sky. This tunnel, though, appears to have been collapsed by the entrance.

On the plus side, this means that whatever is on the other side has not been left out for scavengers. On the negative, the risk for a landslide is great. And since this is so far away from the other sections of the quarry, if you get trapped, it will be a long time before anyone finds you.]

[This section of the mine isn't actually within the mine at all. It's a part of the ground that was blasted apart in the Calamity, which means that a keen eye can see anything that had previously been buried in that area.

Due to the formation and the difficulty of getting around this rocky cliff, it has been left alone by scavengers. However, without the proper tools, you risk slipping and falling off the Skyway.]

[And here's Zahi, ready to save your behinds if you get into trouble.]

[For the time being, Ryu is hanging back with some medical supplies and his magic. He'll be tending to any injuries presented as best he can.]

[It does look risky, but that's why they're here, isn't it? Areas like this one are where they're most likely to find a core, and they can't skip a location just because it looks a little dangerous. Or a lot dangerous.

Yukio peers carefully over the edge of the cliff, frowning down at the scattered bits of rock and the unsettling lack of anything else below them. All his usual gear (including weapons and medical supplies) is in its proper place around his waist, but he's pulled his long exorcist coat out of the closet for this trip, an added layer of protection against whatever they might find out on the Skyway.]

Can you see anything from here, Tobias-san?

[Kind of a long shot, because no way their luck's that good, but it's worth asking. Hawks have great eyesight, after all.]

[Tobias is just glad he's not in the tunnels, though if something goes wrong with one of the other teams he can deal with it. He flaps above the other two, wheeling around and taking another look.]

<Nothing yet, but I'll let you know if I spot anything. I have a mountain goat morph if we need some pushing power, too.>

[This is a cliff.

This is a cliff that goes off the side of a chunk of land into the nothingness of the Skyway.

Nanaki is noping so hard right now that it can practically be heard, even though she's not saying anything.

But she knows that they have to do this. If they don't at least look, then they risk overlooking a core, which they really need right now. So she tries her best to force down her visceral reaction of 'why the hell would anyone go anywhere near a cliff like this' so she can actually help.]

While Tobias is looking, we should try to find like...rope and stuff. Things we can use to actually get to a core if he sees one.

With the team he'd settled in with, Colin had quickly decided that they weren't in any likelihood going to find a core. Combat was also likely if they went poking about the tunnels, and he was NOT about to put Anna at risk.

But the Foreman's office was likely to have plenty of discoveries of its own, and plenty of things that could be of interest to everyone involved. Except maybe Mikoto, but the larvesta seemed happy to be around Anna, so much else wouldn't be too necessary.

When Colin opens the door, it's without any pomp and flair. He wants to get in, get what they need, and get back to the group. But that's not to say that he's going to rush things...

"Anya, there's always a safe in the foreman's office with petty cash and documents," he tells her. "You're our business genius. You find it, I'll pop it open and we can reap the rewards. Anna, can you find a comfortable place for Mikoto and then see if you can find any tools or books that look important? I'm going to hit up the foreman's desk, see if I can't find any shipping records so we can figure out where the cores may have been getting sent to."

And he immediately makes his way over to the biggest desk in the office to do that.

Anna blinks about the room, then pulls her wagon and Mikoto inside to look about the room from Mikoto's level. She spends a moment pointing at various spots and Mikoto buzzing in reply, before she points at a shelf and Mikoto starts scooting to climb his slow way up a wall to it. He is a bug, however round he's been getting.

"... tools or important looking books." 'Important looking books' means something with a big title, or fancy binding. Or perhaps something terribly plain. Anna starts looking at shelves and desks, following Mikoto's slow progress as she tries to open drawers and peer inside.

Anya is fine with not going into the tunnels, but more out of concern for putting herself in that much risk than Anna, although she understands that the little girl would likely be killed in a fight and that would be bad.

"What makes you think I couldn't open a safe?" she wonders at Colin's instructions. It's like he doesn't know she once successfully robbed a bank. She might even be better at opening it up than locating it, because the foreman probably wasn't some television criminal who preferred to hide his safe behind a painting, but she'll look in more practical places shortly.

[Saix isn't particularly concerned about there being a landslide even though he suspects he really should be. Maybe it's the fact that he has his own strength on his side and the ability to open a portal should things get dangerous. However, he does try to remember that he is with two other people. With the Dusk Nobody twisting about besides him, he looks back at Ghaleon and Jay.]

Any particular way you want to go about this, then? We may find something useful if it's been blocked off like this from the rest of the Skyway... But I don't want to open a portal blindly.

[Things have been quiet enough as they've made their way over here, but looking at the cart path sloping downward, Roxas isn't sure how much longer that's likely to last. He pauses and glances over at his Samurai nobody and his two (probably) human companions. They both seem like they've got fighting experience, so to be honest he's more concerned about getting along than anyone getting hurt.]

Let's- all keep our eyes open, okay?

"I find it's safer to assume that people don't have skills that qualify as felonies, rather than hoping they do," Colin tells Anya in amusement as he starts to search the desk. "If you can crack it, I'll leave it in your hands."

Ears might be a bit misleading, if it gets more closed in, but better to be jumpy than ignore something that could be important. [ Or a hint of something about to jump them.

And Duke's grim face is for this slope. Heading back out is going to be a pain in the ass.. ]

I've got magic, but I think I'll save it for healing, unless either of you are good at that?

[Jay examines the fallen rocks critically and even kicks one with a pointy-toed boot.]

We should be careful, yes, darling, but ... this place looks undisturbed. All the more chance of finding something interesting and useful.

Or we could find out they blocked this tunnel off because there are monsters in there. Either way!

[Well...he'd always been told no risk no reward, and with that in mind, Ippo had consulted with the members of his assigned team before they began venturing into the deeper tunnels. He'd thought to have them bring a lamp, but wasn't holding it himself to keep his hands open; if he needed to fight, his fists were his lifeline.

He opted to take the lead, putting himself between any potential danger and his team as he took a slow pace into the barely lit darkness.]

Alright...everyone keep your eyes open and lets get through this in one piece.

[He wasn't all to comfortable with it being this dark, but he had good people behind him, and that made things much easier to deal with.]
