[Day 209] it's morphin' time!;

Who: Tobias and anyone who wants to play with a dolphin.

What: It's been stressful lately. It's time to be silly.

[Maybe it was due to the stress of dealing with the whole cure thing and the having to go find Ura and get back to the Bastion. Maybe he was just tired of thinking of how much he missed Rachel and the others. Or maybe he was just done with the weird animals here.]

[Whatever the reason, Tobias did something he didn't normally do - he morphed dolphin, splashing around in the lake in Dragonfield and nosing at rocks and basically making a bunch of noise. It is entirely possible for him to be seen flailing around, or occasionally in hawk morph resting. Is he going to use all of his morphs today on dolphin time? Yes. Yes he is.]

[Well, the weird animals are definitely done with Tobias. It doesn't take long for the turtle ducks living in the lake to decide that they really don't like this large fish thing and make for the shore, quacking loudly all the way. Their complaints bring Zuko over, though she can't identify the animal any more than they can.

The turtle ducks crowd around her feet as though expecting her to do something, but she just crouches down to be closer to them while she watches the fish thing splash around. Where did it come from? Is there any danger it might eat them?]

[Well they do look like snacks, but Tobias has been being careful not to eat anything in the Bastion. With all the weird animals around he's not sure what's a pet and what's not. But he rolls over as he surfaces, slapping his side with a flipper.]

<Hi! Hi hi!>

[Zuko took the talking hawk thing in stride before because everyone else seemed to think it was normal, but she's not making the leap to talking fish-thing even if he's sort of pointing at himself. She glances around in search of the inexplicably excited bird (judging by his voice), but she doesn't see him anywhere.]

Uh...

<Over here. The dolphin. The uh... fish thing. It's me!>

[Tobias that is not helpful.]

<I thought I'd relax today.>

What?

[She's heard of dolphin piranhas at least, but still...]

I thought you were a hawk. Are you trying to see how gullible I am?

[It's true he wouldn't be the only shapeshifter in the Bastion, but shifting between a hawk and a 'dolphin'? Pretty weird. Maybe he's just hiding nearby and pretending to talk for the dolphin.]

<Nope. I wasn't always a hawk. I was a human for most of my life but I got stuck. And then I got given the power back. My life is really weird, okay? I can change into whatever I can touch. That's... got the same kind of genetic structure.>

[Let's not go into genetics, he only was in like seventh grade when this stuff started.]

[Zuko doesn't know what genetics are anyway. She'll stick with the "can change into whatever he touches" explanation.]

That's... a really powerful ability.

[Does that mean he can change into specific people, too? That's kind of alarming.]

<Yeah, it is. Don't get me wrong, we use it for fun sometimes, but usually we just use it for missions. Usually once or twice a month...>

Seems like something that could be easily misused.

<We... had a problem with that before. We had to... well. We didn't kill him but we did kind of... trap him in the body of a rat on an island in the middle of the ocean.>

[... David is kind of a black mark on their mission history.]

That sounds merciful.

He was an ally of yours?

I can... understand why you wouldn't want someone who did all that on your team.

[It's still pretty amazing that Aang and the others accepted her, when she thinks about it.]

<It was... a while ago. We don't really talk about it, but it's still kind of... there.>

[Uuugh he did not want to get into this while in dolphin morph.]

<... Anyway. Dolphins aren't really common where I live, but there's a wildlife park my friend's dad works at so we go there to get morphs for missions.>

There must be no end of uses... One form for speed, another for battle-- or you could disguise yourself as an enemy so you wouldn't have to fight.

<Exactly. It's how we've held out for two years. Six teenagers - well five teenagers and a teenager-equivalent alien - versus an entire invading force. A quiet invasion, but still an invasion.>

Ours... wasn't quiet. I can't say if that's better or worse.

<... Yeah, I don't know. Help would be nice, but... a lot more people would probably die.>

That's not something you can avoid in war.

...but I guess none of that really matters now.

<... Maybe not. But I refuse to believe that there's no way to fix things, even if I have to find the Ellimist and convince him myself.>

[Zuko doesn't believe in undoing things, only salvaging them, but she's not about to tell Tobias he can't. And... maybe she's curious why he thinks there might be a way.]

Who's this "Ellimist"?

<... He's kind of like a god, effectively. He exists outside of space and time as far as I can tell. When I was trapped as just being a bird, he kind of... used me to help guide some - creatures to safety, and gave me my morphing abilities back in return. He also ->

[He goes quiet for a minute, wondering if he should tell Zuko something so personal.]

<The alien who gave us these abilities was named Elfangor. He was killed in front of us right after. But apparently he... he trapped himself as a human intentionally to be with my mother. And one day the Ellimist came and took him away, and changed the timeline so someone else was my father. But he left me a letter.>

[He rolls over and flops back so he's more in the water, trying to distract himself.]

[Not this time travel stuff again. She was only just introduced to the concept. Zuko squints at him, trying to sort this out in her head. His father was an "alien" but then he wasn't, but was he killed before or after that?

Who knows.

Zuko is just going to try to get what she can out of that.]

It sounds like your Ellimist just does what he wants.

<... Basically. I think he nudged events to give us a better chance, but we still have to use it.>
